Transmission problems

I hate making my first post here about an issue but I am at my wits end with this one and I'm really hoping someone has seen something similar. I have a 2013 R-spec sedan with 42K on the clock. I've owned this car since 8 miles were on it. I've recently noticed that I've got several issues that I believe are stemming from the transmission. Of course they are intermittent and the dealer has claimed they cannot duplicate the issue. I can do it at will if I need to. Here are my issues
Whine from the tranny. Very slight but its there. In any other car I've owned the whine means bad things.

Every so often it feels like it slams into gear. revs go up. Car doesnt go. Then it catches up. there is no clunk it just doesnt engage it feels like. mostly from a stop but I have seen this once or twice merging on the highway.

Here is the major one. The car shutters and shakes at low speed and in between gears 3-4 mostly. Speeds range from 20-30MPH. Most noticeably when going uphill. It's almost like the car doesn't seem to know its supposed to shift and it has that manual transmission feel of being in too high a gear for the speed. I also get a feeling of driving on rumble strips at time until the car shifts.

The last thing I've noticed ist hat the car kind of bangs into a shift. I never noticed this and in fact had trouble telling what gear i was in. Now I know just about every shift. Especially if i accelerate hard to merge or to pass. that 5-6-7-8 shift is more like thud thud thud thud.

Has anyone experienced these issues? I'm getting really fed up with this and i'd like to be able to get it fixed. I love my car but there are far too many cars out there that I can replace it with that would make me just as happy and I'm not particularly enjoying the possible blow out of a tranny on the high way or hours from home.

Has the transmission been serviced every 60k miles? Has it been serviced at all? Has the transmission had the software update? A friend of mine had similar issues with his 5.0 r spec and the software update along with fluid and filter change solved it.

I've put it in for every recommended service that Hyundai claims it needs. it's been in on schedule as well. It's only got 42k on it now so it has not had the 60k service.

i've checked to see if there is anything for a TSB or recall or anything on my vehicle (just did it today when my blue link monthly statement came) and there is nothing pending for it. Is the update something that is posted and the dealer just does? I don't believe I've received any updates for it while at the dealer.

Good to know that the service fixed it. I'm petrified of being hours from home and a tranny grenades on me.

I experienced this same thing just this morning for the first time in my 2015 3.8 AWD. It actually scared me a bit when it slammed into gear. I came to the forum to see if this was a common issue.

This isn't an issue I've heard much about on these forums but the 8 speed transmission cars are new enough that we probably won't see major issues until they start to accumulate mileage in numbers. The 6 speed ZF trans in my 4.6 is pretty bullet proof but the 8 speed unit isn't well understood yet.

Unfortunately, that actually is a common problem with the 1G Genesis, and it will more than likely mean a new transmission for you. I'm not sure about the V8 & the 8-speed, but there's been several of us with the V6 and the 8-speed go thru this. The rev-jump between gears is the big sign.

I had mine replaced under warranty with about 25K miles on the clock. Your dealer will not doubt offer to reset the TCU, but in my case it just made it worse. But it's what they have to go thru to get authorization from Hyundai to do a warranty replacement. My dealer provided me with a loaner Sonata for a week or so, while they waited for the replacement. The good news is with almost 70K on the clock now, the replacement has been rock solid, no sign of problems at all.

Well it looks like you all have confirmed what I thought. I had an issue yesterday passing on the highway where it slammed into the next gear so hard my daughter asked me what I was doing from the back seat. I just hope I'm close to home when it goes.

I had my transmission replaced...there is no "fix" 2012 R Spec

Outside of the dealer what options does a Gen Sedan owner have in regards to service or fluid and filter change?

Why not enquire what a local transmission specialist company, or even the Pep Boys type of places charge for a fluid and filter change? It doesn't sound too complicated provided that they use the correct fluid and filter. I'll be looking into this myself soon. I just want to make sure that the filter is changed and not watching them do it, I'm not sure that I trust the dealer either.

The Hyundai transmission is not easy to do a fluid change on. It requires a very specific synthetic fluid (not just any synthetic) that a general transmission shop may not have in stock (and my not realize what fluid is required), and the drain procedure is not straight forward.

Due to the newness of the Hyundai 8-speed transmission, and recommended 100K fluid change interval, it is unlikely that a Pep Boys, AAMCO, etc, technician you use has ever done it before.

Go with the Hyundai dealer on this one.

I do all my all own oil changes, but this is a different animal.

Well I've had it back into the shop three times since this post. All in less than 3000 miles. First time dealer could not duplicate it. Second time I drove the car and they flashed the transmission or something. This made it worse. Third time they could not duplicate it again. The fourth time I drove it with the computer hooked up and was able to duplicate it again. The tech said he thinks it's a shift solenoid but with it being a sealed transmission it means a replacement. The dealer is waiting for Hyundai to authorize a new transmission and I'll be calling in tomorrow to see what the verdict is. I'm going on five months with this issue and at least six times in for service with the same thing. Suffice to say my future probably won't have a. Hyundai in it

I have no idea. The dealer jerked me around for about a month on it and stuck me in a piece of crap Dodge Journey loaner for the duration. So much for that Genesis loaner while it was in right? I got Hyundai involved. They basically poo pooed me and did nothing. I also had some paint chip and rust issues that they told me previously they'd warranty until I finally pushed them to do so then they blamed me for it. Hyundai again did nothing. At that point I'd had enough. I took it back went to the gmc dealer and traded it in on a 2016 Sierra Denali. They dealt with it from there. Took a serious bath on trade but I don't have to worry about t anymore. This was my family's fourth Hyundai and last. Shame i was treated the way I was.

There was a manufacturing design defect in 2012, the first year that the Hyundai 8-speed transmission was produced. The change needed to fix it was "relatively" minor, but required a new transmission. You should not have any problems with your replacement transmission that are related to the original problem, and after 2012 there have not been a lot of reported transmissions problem.

As to whether you have anything to worry about now, you would have to provide a lot more information about your life situation, your family, etc.

Be very careful of the shop that does the transmission service, including the dealer. Ask questions of the techs that will do the work. Find out if they have the training and have been performing the service on that particular transmission for some time. I found that a Hyundai dealer I use to go to had a service manager and techs that knew nothing about the ZF transmission in my 2011 4.6. The local BMW would have been my better choice since the same transmission comes in several BMW's.

They don't "service" the transmission, they replace it. Had mine done on my 2012 at about 25K if memory serves. Currently 81K, and no issues with the transmission. Draw you own conclusions.....
