  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Transmission problems

Ok... So I just happened to show up at the dealer a couple weeks ago and as I pulled in, I saw my car sitting in the reserved Genesis area next to the service dept. I can tell it from a distance because I have super dark tint on the windows.
I go inside and the gentleman in charge of Genesis repairs looks up and has a startled look on his face. He says we just got everything working properly this morning. I was going to call you after lunch. So I showed up up at just the right time.
The transmission is as smooth now as it was at the beginning. No hard shifts, or racing engine with no increase in speed. The whole thing was at no cost to me. I did have to pay for what it originally went in for. Oil change, and new front brakes, pads and rotors. So 850 bucks. Not to bad considering they replaced the transmission with a factory rebuilt one, and replaced the radio unit. That kept locking up and I would have to pull over and shut the car down and open the drivers door and close it to get it to work again. They did however forget to put the navigation memory card in the new unit. So I'm waiting for a replacement chip from Genesis. Hopefully those are the last major thing I'll have to have done for along time. There is only 57,000 miles on the car.

Not to scare you, but be prepared if this problem were to resurface. My transmission was dealer replaced at 60k miles due to the same issue. At 118k miles on the car (58k miles on the new transmission), the same problem came back.

I hate making my first post here about an issue but I am at my wits end with this one and I'm really hoping someone has seen something similar. I have a 2013 R-spec sedan with 42K on the clock. I've owned this car since 8 miles were on it. I've recently noticed that I've got several issues that I believe are stemming from the transmission. Of course they are intermittent and the dealer has claimed they cannot duplicate the issue. I can do it at will if I need to. Here are my issues
Whine from the tranny. Very slight but its there. In any other car I've owned the whine means bad things.

Every so often it feels like it slams into gear. revs go up. Car doesnt go. Then it catches up. there is no clunk it just doesnt engage it feels like. mostly from a stop but I have seen this once or twice merging on the highway.

Here is the major one. The car shutters and shakes at low speed and in between gears 3-4 mostly. Speeds range from 20-30MPH. Most noticeably when going uphill. It's almost like the car doesn't seem to know its supposed to shift and it has that manual transmission feel of being in too high a gear for the speed. I also get a feeling of driving on rumble strips at time until the car shifts.

The last thing I've noticed ist hat the car kind of bangs into a shift. I never noticed this and in fact had trouble telling what gear i was in. Now I know just about every shift. Especially if i accelerate hard to merge or to pass. that 5-6-7-8 shift is more like thud thud thud thud.

Has anyone experienced these issues? I'm getting really fed up with this and i'd like to be able to get it fixed. I love my car but there are far too many cars out there that I can replace it with that would make me just as happy and I'm not particularly enjoying the possible blow out of a tranny on the high way or hours from home.
I’m discovering all those exact issues with my newly purchased (9/1/2022) of 2013 5.0 with 67000 miles.

You have 1 or 2 bad Catalytic Converters and most likely a bad Purge Valve. Order you Cats through Rock Auto and not through the dealership or a local parts store. Save a bunch a Doe!

There was a manufacturing design defect in 2012, the first year that the Hyundai 8-speed transmission was produced. The change needed to fix it was "relatively" minor, but required a new transmission. You should not have any problems with your replacement transmission that are related to the original problem, and after 2012 there have not been a lot of reported transmissions problem.

As to whether you have anything to worry about now, you would have to provide a lot more information about your life situation, your family, etc.
Can you put a 2013 transmission in a 2012 ?

Hi folks,

My beloved 2012 Genesis sedan suffered an untimely death via t-boning. Sigh...

Some background - I'll get to the tranny question at the end:
I am considering mainly Genesis models, from 2016 to 2018, including G80, but also Equus, Toyota Avalon and Cadi XTS AWD.
My main hesitance has to do with the transmission. One of the options had the transmission changed - same as mine. I don't recall the exact mileage when I had it changed, but it was 4 years ago, probably at around 75-80k miles (120+k kms)

Here's what I'm considering:

  • The same 2012 year with just an upgrade from premium package (which is what I had) to technology. Mileage: almost 90k miles.
  • 2012 Equus with... 33miles (54k kms) - just some body scratches.
  • 2016 Genesis Tech - 80k miles/ 140k kms
  • 2018 Genesis G80 Ultimate - 80k miles/ 140k kms
  • 2017-2018 Toyota Avalon Limited - 80k miles/ 140k kms
  • 2016-2017 Cadillac XTS AWD - under 60k miles/ 100k kms
Not sure if I'll afford any of the latter 3 options, especially as I wouldn't want to go over a mileage of 60k miles (100k kms). The current interest rates are bonkers in Canada. I'd like to stay close to the insurance settlement.

QUESTIONS that I'd appreciate getting your feedback on:
  • What model year Genny's got a new tranny for their sedans? Do the 2016's have the same tranny's? What about the G80's?
  • I've had the transmission swapped to a reconditioned transmission, when I did the repair on my last Genny. The result was just OK. It never was perfect. Should they now have a better transmission - how does it compare with the old 2012 trouble plagued one?
  • A non tranny question: what would you buy, if you were in my situation - see the list and comments above?
Any help navigating my situation would be much appreciated.
I have to make a call real soon.

Thank you

buju, here's my take:

I have bought both of my Genesis cars used, both when 2-3 years old and still under the original 5/60 BTB warranty. I bought the zero-deductible, transferrable Hyundai Protection Plan Premium extended warranties for both cars. Both warranties paid for themselves by about double in total: $3800 paid, $7kish expense avoided over the last 12 years. I do not recommend owning a Luxury Hyundai car (i.e. made in Korea) out of warranty. That said, if the 2012 Equus is a one-owner granny-driven Florida cream puff with a pristine service history ... and the price is right .... I might consider it for the short list. But it's still a 12 year old car and will have 12 year old car issues, and major repairs on these cars are not small money.

If I was going to put my cash into a mid-201x car, I'd probably go with a Toyota. Toyota drivetrains, if cared well for*, tend to outlast most others by about 50% in my experience. The wife's 2007 3MZ-FE Solara vert is still pulling strong at 220kmi (although it's getting to the end of it's financial life with CV axles and AC compressor coming up for replacement). She's getting a 30kmi 2012 Genesis grandad cream puff to replace it. I consider my daughter lucky as her 2007 Santa Fe with 230kmi is also still going strong. She listened to her dad and does her maintenance, so there's that.

*No matter what you go with, having a pristine service history is by far the most important factor. Modern cars with their oil-pressure-driven camshaft variable valve timing systems and hydraulic (engine oil) timing chain tensioners are rather sensitive to oil sludge buildup. VERY_BAD_THINGS(TM) will happen to any and all modern ICE cars if they are not maintained properly. Watch a few episodes of I DO CARS on youtube to see the carnage.

Your mileage, as they say, may vary. :drinks:
