Brand New Owner - 2016 White 3.8 HTRAC w Tech Package

I just picked up a new 2016 White 3.8 HTRAC with the tech package here in Toronto, Canada and I honestly can say that I am, so far, impressed with this vehicle. Prior to the Genesis I was in a 2014 Acura TSX, which I still owe and love and back in the day I owned an Acura Integra Type R and I can say that was one fun car. I've always been partial to Honda however I thought that perhaps it was time for change.

Before purchasing the Genesis I was leaning toward a Q50 AWD, IS-350 AWD and the TLX SH-AWD however found myself time and time again looking at the Genesis. The bold styling, the features, the warranty, the pricing, I could not resist.

With all that said I had a few quick questions, I am new to the forum however I have been searching for my answers but thought I would post.

1. I would like to install a K&N Air Filter, I had good experiences with these filters in my Acura's however this is my first Hyundai and I am wondering if A - I will run into any issues mechanically and B - will the dealer cause me issues if they detect that this has been installed.

2. I thought that the Blue-link system would be integrated into this vehicle however from what I can tell this isn't available in Canada.

3. I would like to switch to synthetic oil, perhaps, AMSOil if I can get it or Royal Purple however again I am not sure if I will run into any issues with Hyundai.

4. Although I do not plan to daily drive the Genesis I would still like to apply rust protection, Krown. I have been using Krown on my vehicles for years without issue however again not being familiar with the Hyundai experience I thought I'd better reach out. I called Hyundai Canada however was given a very ambiguous answer in terms warranty issues resulting from rusting checking the car.

1. I would not install a K&N air filter. Hyundai will give you a hard time about that if there are any warranty issues.
2. Don't know.
3. Synthetic oil is an excellent idea. Amsoil makes three different "qualities" of synthetic, and the best one is not API certified, and could result in warranty issues. For someone in Canada, I would recommend Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE (Advanced Fuel Economy). If you like purple oil, buy the Mobil 1 and put some purple dye in your crankcase.
4. In Canada, here is the anti-perforation warranty good for 5 years (unlimited kilometers): "Covers perforation due to corrosion on body sheet metal from inside to outer body surface. Covers perforation, corrosion of any component through the metal body panel from the lower window line down and occurring from the inner to outer surface, corrosion of original Hyundai body sheet metal due to defects in material or factory workmanship, under normal use and maintenance. Excludes surface corrosion." Whether or not you need additional corrotion protecton probably depends on whether streets in your area are heavily salted in snowy conditions. In the USA, the anti-perforation warranty is 7 years (but Canadians get free health care).

I think it depends on whether it fits in the existing air filter housing (same size as OEM) and whether it meets OEM specs for airflow and filtering. My understanding about K&N is that some of them replace the entire air filter housing, and some also rely on an oil coated filter, which does not meet OEM specs.

People who want a little extra HP should use premium gas, and non-*ethanol gas (but hard to find unless you live near a marina).

Over in the Lexus GS forums during my research there is much conversation about what gas to use. When I read about the Genesis, it was just one more thing that made my choice easy.

Thanks folks, I've decided to hold off on the K&N until I speak to my dealership here in Toronto, if they seem ok with it and I feel confident about their answer I might consider it further.

As for gas, in Toronto the only non-ethanol gas is sold at Shell, both Petro Canada and Esso indicate that their gas contains ethanol up to 10%. Is there a specific issue with the Genesis and ethanol gas or is this more of an issue with ethanol gas in general?

Some people claim you'll get a few extra horses and better gas mileage. When I read that, I jumped online and searched for the closest station to me that sold it. (there's several in my town apparently which surprised me)

So, I ran a tank of non-ethanol premium through my 3.8. Now, I am a realist - I didn't expect for my car to suddenly feel like it was making 350HP or anything, but even with that said. I didn't feel a difference. I didn't even get better MPG at a noticeable rate. Since it was $1USD MORE expensive per gallon, I probably won't be doing that again any time soon either. (was just over $50.00 to fill up)

In the summer I am taking a cross country road trip in my car so I plan to do a real test (like nerds like me do) between different fuel types.

Going with high octane gas in a Genesis will only waste your money with no improvement in mileage or performance. All gasolines have the same energy (BTU content) except that premium gas has additive to prevent pre-ignition (knocking) in high performance engines (high compression). I use regular gas in my Infiniti which requires premium gas because the engine does not knock and I don't see any difference in performance. The same is true for people that lease cars that require premium gasoline.
PS the added cost difference of the additives is way too high but is a huge money maker for the gasoline companies that take advantage of people that are not well informed.

It is a fact that none ethanol gasoline has a higher energy level (more BTU per Gallon) than gasoline with ethanol. It will therefore give you better gas mileage
