  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does sports mode driving damage the 2012 r-spec 8 spd transmission?

There are days when I drive the vehicle for fun, rather than transportation. I like sports mode to hold higher RPMs, accelerate quicker, and especially to slow the vehicle w/o braking. For the true mechanics or otherwise experienced, does this damage the tranny? It seems to me that it would stress it far more than the normal and incredibly overdriven low RPM range of the r-spec.

Just curious.

You should ask that question in the forum where most of the people who own that model year car are probably hanging out: http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/forumdisplay.php?11-General-2009-2014-Hyundai-Genesis-Sedan-Discussion

This forum is mostly frequented by owners of the 2015+ model year vehicles.
You are correct that he posted in the wrong forum, but I doubt that most members "hang out" in any particular forum section. I always look at the list of "new posts" since I last logged on, and read the ones I am interested in, regardless of the forum.

This is a difficult question, because the early 2012 Hyundai 8-speed transmissions (2012 was the first model year they were introduced) had a higher than normal problem rate, and Hyundai replaced a fair number of them. At some point during the 2012 model year, the problem was fixed, so it may not affect all 2012 transmissions.

If you were talking about the 2014 or so R-Spec, the danger would probably be smaller, but hard to say what the demarcation lines is between vigorous use, and abuse. Since I use my car as transportation, I am the wrong person to ask.

I'm sure AustinTX was only suggestion another forum directed at Gen 1 Genesis' to get the right information. As for your car use, I looked over the post and saw no mention of you. I'm sure the poster would ask you if you were the right person.

I have nothing against AustinTX's comment that the post was in the wrong forum. However, I have my doubts about whether that has anything to do with how many people answered the OP's question. As I mentioned, most people read the "new posts" regardless of forum.

My comments were two-fold.

1. To mention the problems with the early 2012 transmission (I don't have to own a 2012 to know about that), and

2. Besides the issue with some 2012 transmissions, I said in my reply that I am not the right person to answer his question since I don't drive my that way.

I must not be part of the "most people" group, because I do certainly not have time to read every post on every forum. I come to this 2015/2016 forum specifically, and don't ready other posts, especially not those not directed at the owners of the vehicle I actually own. I may be the exception, who knows.

I do hope the OP will get an answer to his question, and I think he has a better chance in the forum that actually deals with the model years of his vehicle.

Even though I do use the "new posts" that does not obligate me to read them all if I am not interested (base on the thread title).

Anyway, the 2012 transmission (Hyundai 8-speed) has basically remained the same design from 2012-2017. Obviously, they have made some minor changes to fix problems encountered (as in any brand new product), but very little has changed in the basic design. Shift points are adapted to each specific engine, but that is not likely to have a big impact on the transmission reliability.

There are also other components, such as engines (3.8 GDI, 5.0 GDI), that a pretty much the same since 2012 up through 2017, and reliability should be similar, except for small improvement made along the way.
