New tires at 13,000 Miles

I have a 2015 5.0 and the dealer just told me I need new tires due to extreme wear in the inside tread of the tires. I only have 13,000 miles on the car, is this normal? I feel like its due to bad alignment or something from Hyundai. And before someone comments, No you cannot rotate the tires due to the staggered set up on 5.0's

We could use some more info, what kind of tires? Are they all worn or just the front? Or the rear?
With only a v6, I am tearing the tires (OEM Michelin MXM4) in the rear a new one with my heavy foot. But they are wearing evenly. At best, I might get 20k out of them.

I rotate my tires from left to right on my V8. The rears wear faster than the fronts. I do a 4 wheel alignment about every 5,000 miles and my tread wears evenly.

13K miles for OEM tires is not unheard of. OEM tires are not chosen for long tread wear. For the early Genesis models (2009-2011) the Dunlap OEM tires on the Genesis rarely lasted more than 20K miles, even for little old ladies driving the V6.

The problem with not being able to rotate tires on the V8 due to staggered setup has been noted before, and I guess is a price that must be paid if you want horsepower that you don't really need (most people are more than satisfied with the Genesis V6). I suppose they figure if you have money to burn. I would have thought that at least the tires could be rotated left-right, but not front-back, but maybe they are directional?

That has been my experience with OEM tires. My car AND tire dealer advise against left right rotation. Certainly with uni-directional tires, it is out of the question, but I have been told that all radial tires take a rotational "set" after a few thousand miles and the direction should not be changed for the life of the tire.

I have the same vehicle (I think). Didn't you get the new Continental replacements for the original Hankooks??

If so, why the problem?

I got the new Conti's per the recall and they seem fine so far.


Also, as noted above, OEM tires are frequently garbage - which is why I quickly switched to the Conti's.

I have done a modified X pattern rotation for years without an issue. i find that changing a tire from the left side to the right side helps give more even wear. The Genesis V8 can only go from left to right, but i still think switching form side to side helps wear.

Can't answer as I've never seen how you drive. Get wheel alignment checked though.

See if Discount Tire will still honor the 4th of July sale prices. Manufacturer tires aren't covered under a warranty, but you can call Genesis to see if they are willing to help. Otherwise, I think the Genesis is better suited to a UHPAS tire. I've got Michelin Pilot Sports on my car. I've also seen great reviews from the Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 Plus. Though some have said its on-center feel it a bit looser than Michelin. Also, go to Discount Tire Direct's website. The extended warranty is about half of what a local store charges. Print it out and take it with to the store. My local Discount matched the online price.

How is your alignment? Are your tires properly inflated? There is limited ability to correct the rear alignment in this car, but poor alignment will significantly accelerate your tire wear. I've also found that lower tire pressure seems to greatly accelerate the wear of the rear tires. Last year I had lower pressure due to a leak and was too lazy to get it fixed. At that time I also kept the rear at 35psi, so the leaking side would drop to 32 or slightly less very frequently over a couple months. Those tires wore on the inside insanely fast, worse on the leaking side. I've since kept my rear pressure been 36 - 39 psi. After a year and nearly 18,000 miles, my rear tires look fantastic with no abnormal wear on the inside.

Tire selection may also play a factor. If you go cheap, you'll end up paying more in the long run by buying new tires more frequently. I have the latest version of Continental DSW06 and these are the longest lasting I've seen on this car in my 4 years of ownership.

I keep my tires inflated to 35 on the front and 38 rear. We have a lot of potholes in Dallas and it appears to help. The Michelins I have are totally different from the ContiProContacts I had before. Dealer told me to get rid of the OE tires while they were still worth something. Apparently they had noticed a lot of tires scalloping?

I have a 2015 5.0 Ultimate with about 114K miles. I average about 16,500 mile on rear tires and 33,000 on front. Wear is generally even but quicker than I would like. Since much of my mileage is highway, I usually keep pressures about 2 psi over recommended.
