New large SUV comming from Hyundai (and maybe also Genesis?)

Here is a statement from the Hyundai Listens website:

"In the near future Hyundai will introduce an all new stylish SUV capable of handling anything your family throws at it. This new SUV will be the largest vehicle in the Hyundai line-up with the ability to carry up to 8 passengers comfortably."​

They are still deciding on what to name it, and were looking for input from Hyundai Listens members. It will probably be a Spanish name (as are the current Santa Fe or Veracruz) but a few other names are being considered also.

I wonder if a luxury version of this new SUV will end up in the Genesis lineup? Genesis has promised that 2 new SUV's or CUV's will be added to the Genesis lineup in the next couple of years.

As previously mentioned in a prior post, Hyundai is also considering giving the Santa Fe Sport its own name, different than the larger Santa Fe (which would keep the Santa Fe name for itself).

I'm under the impression that the "Santa Fe" and "Santa Fe Sport" naming was too confusing to the public, so Hyundai wanted to keep the 5 passenger version as the Santa Fe and rename the three row version with a totally new name.

You are probably correct, so I may have been wrong in saying that the Sport will get the new name. Looks like the new one (with seating up to 8 passengers) will be a brand new design and larger than the current full-sized Santa Fe, and be the one with a new name. I suspect that a brand new design of the larger SUV will impact the rollout of a Genesis SUV.

I hope Genesis releases a strong crossover SUV option soon. The trend in the market is heavily leaning CUV/SUV over sedan. A new crossover would attract new buyers to the brand...

I'm under the impression that no future Hyundai and Genesis models will share chassis or engines. As such I'm guessing the larger Hyundai crossover will continue to be a FWD/AWD chassis and the Genesis crossover will be RWD/AWD. Engines should not be shared. Genesis likely being either the current 3. V6 or possibly a new base 4 cyl developed for the G70 sedan. I'd assume that Hyundai would have a new more powerful 4 cyl for their big crossover as more and more manufacturers are dropping their 6 cyl engines (like Mazda CX-9 for example).

Where did you hear that? Does it make you feel dirty and ashamed that a Genesis might share an engine with a Hyundai?

At least in Korea, the Genesis G80 3.3 (non-turbo) engine is the same used on other Hyundai's (3.3 non-turbo not available in USA for Genesis). Also, due to extensive technology sharing with Kia, some Genesis engines and transmissions have been, and are likely to continue to be the same between the Genesis and Kia high-end lineups.

Sharing a "chassis" is a little more complicated these days, since cars (and even most SUV's) use a unibody construction, where there is a single molded unit forming both the bodywork and chassis of a vehicle. So no two unibodies are identical, even though they share a lot of design points. This differs from the old body on frame design, where several different vehicles could share the same frame.

I did the survey on the proposed names. I am not an SUV person, certainly not a big SUV person, but I wouldn't mind one for a road trip/vacation.

I am thinking my next car is going to be a SUV/CUV. I like the idea of going to Home Depot, etc, and being able to bring home whatever I want.

I doubt an SUV, CUV, or pickup stays 10 days on a dealer's lot in Houston. They are extremely popular here in Texas.

What an ignorant response. Asking if someone "feels dirty." This is why fewer and fewer people choose to post online. I have some recollection of articles having been written at the time Genesis was made a separate line of automobiles which stated that Hyundai wanted to differentiate their models. I would ask the moderator to take an active role to remove those members who choose to use this board to launch personal attacks on other members.

It's not a personal attack on anyone. It is an attack on the "idea" that some people have that favors exclusivity of engines, transmissions, etc and not sharing parts from their less expensive brands. I think that idea is pure snobbism, and I prefer to have reliable components used in as many other vehicles as possible.

For me, new is bad, and proven is good. If something is reliable, it doesn't bother me if a Genesis engine is used by Kia or Hyundai. In fact, I would have never have bought a 2009 Genesis if the Lambda V6 engine had not been used in many other Hyundai and Kia cars previously, and the transmission (made by Aisin) had been used by many other manufacturers besides Hyundai/Kia (notably Lexus and others).
