  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I think ac clutch or compressor has failed. Car is making a horrible constant clicking noise with ac off or on and air is blowing hot. It was blowing warm and added some r134a it was working great for about 2 days and then clicking noise started and clutch is trying to move on compressor but is getting stuck. Only moves about 1/4 inch and then stops. I can get a new compressor for about $400 bucks. Im sure this is over $1,000 at dealer. O know I will need to get it recharged. Anyone ever do a compressor change???

An AC compressor clutch will not engage if the refrigerant is low or the compressor is locked up. You need an AC shop to diagnose this rather than just trying to add refrigerant.

To do a compressor change a set of gauges are needed and a vacuum pump and a new dryer may be needed. Its best to take it to a shop that can diagnose what is wrong.

I have the vaccum pump and gauges. I did add R134a due to a leak. Fixed leak added some coolant and it worked great for a 3 days long commutes. Once noise started i put gauge back on low pressure port and it was way high. I did release some 134 and still clutch not engaging.

I have an appointment with dealer on Wed. Hopefully it's covered under warranty. If not I will probably do.it myself. I will bring it to an AC shop and let them charge it up.

Car is a 2013 with 25,000 miles on it. It only had the remaining factory warranty. Which expires next year.

how did your compressor pan out? im gonna replace mine in my 2012 in two weeks.

If the compressor failed internally and introduced any contamination into the system, you would need to flush the entire system for you don’t want a new compressor to crap out prematurely. You have gages and a vacuum pump so other than knowing if contaminates are in the system, sounds like you have what is needed for a self repair if you go that path.

I agree, except that usually the condenser has to be replaced because it is just about impossible to adequately flush the condenser due to most of them having parallel paths.
