  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
No Genesis Yet!
Good morning everyone,

I strongly apologize if this has been covered before, however 'VIN' is unable to be used as a search term for the forums.

In any case, is there a 'vin' decoder thread or guide that you could help me reference? Ideally, the guide would help me understand the engine, package(s), exterior color, interior color.

Thank you!
Mac

You cannot get all that from the VIN.

First 3 digits = KMH = Hyundai passenger vehicle Korea built

4th digit = G = Genesis

5th digit = L (low grade), M (middle-low grade), N (middle grade), O (middle-high grade), P (high grade)

6th digit = Body/Cabin type = 4 = sedan 4 door

7th digit = restraint type = J = too much to type

8th digit = engine type = E (3.8L), F (5.0L)

9th digit = check number

10th digit = model year = F (2015), G (2016)

11th digit = plant of production = U = Ulsan, Korea

12-17th digits = production sequence number

The site I published above did know my exterior color (AU - Silver). I don't think they have the specific trim packages. I have a first generation Genesis (2009-2014).

Then they have access to Hyundai's database because there is nothing in the VIN that indicates a color. In other models, you can decipher what trim level it is, GLS, SE, Limited, etc. But, there is nothing to indicate what option package (premium, tech, ultimate) it has. I can reprint window stickers going back a few years, so if you have a car that you're curious as to what option packages it has, I can try to run it and see if I can pull it up.

Good morning,

Thank you all for attempting to answer my questions. I am coming from Honda/Acura and the VIN number almost always gives details of the trim/package upgrades.

To follow-up, is there any easy ways to recognize the different trim packages on a 2015 or 2016? I am using carsgurus.com and have found that the 'packages' listed are very often incorrect.

Thank you

If I remember the packages correctly, you can tell mainly by the grille. No smart cruise control sensor, and no sunroof, it's a base. No scc sensor, with sunroof, it's the premium. With scc sensor, and no DIS knob on the console, it's a tech package. With scc sensor, and with DIS knob, it's the ultimate.

Someone might want to confirm what's on the premium package. I'm by myself right now and don't have time to check with one of our salespeople.

No sunroof is base. If it has round DIS controller knob behind shifter on center console, it is Ultimate Package. Not sure how to easily tell the difference between Signature and Tech Package from looking at photos, but maybe someone else knows.

Genesis Packages before 2015 are different (Tech Package was highest level).

Thank you both

for the SCC sensor - what am i looking for. Supposedly this is an ultimate
Yes, it is an Ultimate. Note the round 3 inch diameter DIS controller knob behind the shifter on center console.

The sensor is used in Tech and Ultimate Package (and maybe signature, not sure). It is a clear rectangular piece of plastic on the front grill. I can see it on the link you provided.

It appears to be a 3.8 Tech Package, at least that's what we call it here in Canada. Ultimate is only for the 5.0 V8. (It appears to have a 3.8 on the trunk lid)

That's great, but the car and the potential buyer are not in Canada, they are in the US. The car is a 2016 Genesis with Ultimate Package (which requires Tech Package, etc). Ultimate Package for 2015 and 2016 was definitely available for the V6 in the USA.
