If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Anyone know how much an engine replacement costs w/out warranty? Have a 2012 5.0 R-Spec and it's has a rod knocking like noise but it seems to be coming from the drivers side cylinder head. Car has 67,000 miles and I purchased it from a private seller and am assuming powertrain warranty is not transferable? Just trying to prepare for the worst. Car has been superb so far and I dearly love it.

The extended drive train warranty is not transferable, unless the car is sold by a Hyundai dealer and if they elected to make it a CPO car (buy paying Hyundai Motor America about $1000).

The early 2012 5.0 engines had a high incidence of excessive oil usage, which led to other problems, and many were replaced under warranty. Here are the prices of the short block and long block from an online dealer:

Obviously, shipping will not be cheap unless you can find one closer to your home. Labor will not be cheap either, especially if you only get the short block. Maybe best to find a 2013 engine from a car that has been junked.

A reman long block from Hyundai has a list price of $9,100 for the engine by itself. This does not include any gaskets you will need, or anything that breaks when transferring to the new engine. Most of the time the reman engines come pretty much complete. Having never done a 5.0 before, I'm not sure how complete it will be.

Check out eBay for used motors.

Also, get a professional opinion on the "rod knock" before you spend big $$$. Bad rods (usually the rod bearings) are not common in modern motors.

Is it possible or feasible to purchase an extended warranty immediately on that Genesis and would it cover this issue should that engine prove for have oil consumption or other issues down the road, or would that be considered a "pre-existing condition" not covered by an extended warranty purchased tomorrow?

From what others have posted on this forum, an extended warranty from Hyundai can only be purchased if the existing 5 year - 60K mile warranty is still in effect. Also, depending on the mileage and years, Hyundai may require an inspection prior to issuing an extended warranty. But if there is currently no excess oil consumption, then I don't see how they could disqualify an extended warranty, just because that condition frequently occurred on other 2012 V6's. In fact, I am not even sure an inspection would uncover excess oil consumption that was already occurring (assuming the oil was at full level when the inspection occurred).

I have no idea what third party extended warranties would cover.

Thanks for your reply's guys. Car is now at dealers and am waiting with fingers crossed that it is not something serious. This car was not one of the oil consumers, checked that out thoroughly before I bought it, all servicing done by Hyundai and no reports of excessive oil consumption by either(owner or dealer). Was 5,550mi after last oil change and it was only half a quart low. And build date was March '12, which I understand from the very lengthy oil consumption thread was the date by which they had fixed the problem.

They may have fixed the original 2012 5.0 engine problem by your engine build date, but I have not had a car (including my Genesis) that used any measurable amounts of oil between oil changes in the last 20 years.

I am not sure how a dealer would know if an engine used oil between changes unless a customer complained to them about it. Dealers are not going to measure the amount of oil drained when they do an oil change (unless they happened to notice that it is ridiculously low), and certainly are not going to bring it up while the car is still under warranty.

That's the reason I put ...."oil consumption by either(owner or dealer)" in my post:)

I've exhausted all possibilities with Hyundai on my 2012 to no avail. I brought up the oil consumption issue in 2015 when the car was well under warranty and of course Hyundai proceeds to administer the "oil consumption test" via the dealership where they change the oil and tape the dipstick and drain plug so that no tampering can be done. Then they have you bring it in every 1000 miles, log the consumption and top it off. They then will tell you that unless the consumption is greater than 1 quart per 1000 miles everything is fine. So on a synthetic oil change interval, unless you're putting in more than 7.5 quarts over a 7500 mile interval, everything is within spec and "A-OK".

First of all, the notion of the 1:1000 policy is just criminal. Next, when you're topping off the oil over the interval, of course consumption will not be what it would be otherwise. If the engine in a "new" vehicle (2012 and under warranty is considered new in my book) will self destruct between oil changes if no oil is added, the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the issue. Hyundai simply makes it impossible to get any dispensation with their ridiculous policy and the way in which they administer the testing.

My engine just quit a month ago and it is due to broken valve springs on cylinder #8. Probably due to build up from all of the blow-by due to the defective rings. There was scoring on the cam lobes and metal shavings of course that probably got into the core. The dealer went to bat for me with Hyundai explaining the correlation and Hyundai slammed the door. I went to Hyundai myself as a last ditch effort to get someone to listen and I got the same door slammed in my face. They cited the fact that "I'm the second owner" and the "car is out of warranty". Both are true however, I started this process when the car was at 48K miles. The second owner thing really pissed me off as though they resent the fact that I didn't buy "new" and therefore I'm not worthy of the same consideration as the first owner, even under warranty. Lexus, I'm coming back your way...

First of all, the notion of the 1:1000 policy is just criminal.

That has been accepted by the auto industry as far back as I can remember. I've had cars with no use at 7500 mile changes so it is possible to do better.

A quIck Goggle search found this from Consumer Reports:
How much is too much?

Audi, BMW, and Subaru stick firmly to the statement that oil consumption is a normal part of a car’s operation. Subaru considers a quart burned every 1,000 to 1,200 miles to be acceptable. Certain Audi and BMW cars’ standards state that a quart burned every 600 to 700 miles is reasonable.

Not all engines suffer from this problem. In fact, our data shows that owners of 98 percent of 2010 to 2014 cars did not have to add oil between changes. But the cars that do burn oil do so furiously. Even if only 2 percent of vehicles sold since 2010 have this problem, that still represents about 1.5 million vehicles on the road.
Consumer Reports believes that any engine that burns oil between changes should be repaired under the powertrain warranty. But automakers often shield themselves in the fine print of their owners’ manuals.

I started this process when the car was at 48K miles.

Check your state law, you may be covered. Some require the MFR to honor the warranty if the owner notified them while the warranty was in effect. If you have proof (and/or can find a competent lawyer) you may win this.

Might cost you more than it's worth, however.

I have a 2012 genesis 5.0 r spec the engine has seized I got an aftermarket warranty from cna national auto warranty they will only give me 12,000 to fix it which i got all maintenance at the dealer on time. I’m not bitching about it being, I paid 2k for the warranty I wonder how often that happens. I love to drive my car too but the gas mileage is terrible. I need to find a swap for 12 k let me know what you do I have 80k miles on my car and always check the oil.
Thanks

I have a 2016 3.8L Hyundai Genesis at 57k miles. I have a Car Max warranty where I bought the car, 2nd owner. Oil light went on and off. Took it to a repair shop that takes my extended warranty and they replaced the oil pressure switch. After two weeks or so the engine just died as I was at a stop sign. They say it needs a new engine. Any thoughts on what my chances are of getting an engine and the cost? Thanks!
