In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. We have a 3.8 tech Genesis sedan. We have driven 5600 miles and so the engine should be finally broken in. On a recent trip across the state of PA and across the Allegheny Mountains, a 300 mile trip, we averaged 29.4 miles per gallon. I feel that this is a great number, especially at the speed which we drove. The speed control was set at 76 mph and the trip was 4 hours and four minutes long for a duration of 300 miles.

Feel free to add your your miles per gallon so that we can compare results. I wonder how this car would do on level roads and at a lower or more normal speed. Best gas mileage would occur near 45-50 mph.

Your results are similar to mine, but I have found that best mpg is at about 75 mph. I suspect this is because of the very tall 6th gear. 4th gear is 1:1 and both 5th and 6th are overdrive gears.

I have also found that the V6 tranny in Drive coasts almost like a manual in neutral gear, which helps out a lot on hilly roads to save fuel.

Re: Milage/MPG Better Than Expected

I can't get more than about 22 mpg combined, but I suspect that it would be higher if I could get a full tank's worth of highway driving at speed with cruise control.

Re: Milage/MPG Better Than Expected

On a recent 200 mile trip I average 28.5mpg on my Genesis 4.6/tech using regular grade gas. I was pushing 70mph most of the time. My Gen has 4000 miles on the odo.

Don't feel bad, I am only getting about 20.5-21 with my V6. My commute is mostly gridlock highway and city. Combine that with my heavy foot (when I can) and its about right. I only have 2300 miles, so that # may improve. For comparison doing the same driving my '06 Avalon was about the same. On my first long trip I am curious if the Genny can break 30MPG at 70-75 like the Av did.

Re: Milage/MPG Better Than Expected

When testing for mileage during my commute I can get 29.5 in my v8
(requires slow acceleration and cruise at 55)

Normal commute MPG is 21-23.

Re: Milage/MPG Better Than Expected

On our recent 1400-mile road trip, we averaged around 28 mpg with my V6. Most of that driving was at 75 mph or so. During daily use around town, I'm seeing 23-24 mpg.

Re: Milage/MPG Better Than Expected

On a recent meandering coast-to-coast drive in our 3.8, we got 27.0. That's 392.4 gal of the lowest-grade gasoline over 10,593 miles. Mostly rural driving, neither aggressive nor overly-mindful of fuel economy.

Re: Milage/MPG Better Than Expected

That is GREAT gas milage. All Genesis' give great gas milage.

My 4.6 V8;

27.48 average on trip to Phoenix AZ then Roswell NM.
28.00 average on trip to Penfield/Rochester NY.
20.75 average around Rochester/Monroe Co. (Expressways connecting East and West)
17.5 to 21.0 in Mount Dora/Lake County every day driving.

Not bad for a powerful V8.

Re: Milage/MPG Better Than Expected

On recent 1300 mile trip up and down I-95 in my 4.6, we averaged 26.5 mpg, speed control on 75mph, on high octane. It now has 7500 miles, taking it in next week for oil change. Anyone care to comment on elective transmission fluid change at this point? Happy 4th everyone.

Both the V6 and V8 transmission use synthetic fluid and do not call for any scheduled fluid changes from what I can tell. Certainly not at 7500 miles.

Re: Milage/MPG Better Than Expected

Also be careful on what fluid is used. The V6 uses the Aisin Transmission, and Hyundai has a fluid for it. (Probably the same fluid used in other Aisin Transmissions, such as the Toyota T-IV or Mobil 3309 [aka JWS 3309], but not sure).

The V8 uses the ZF (ZahnradFabrik [sp]) Transmission and Hyundai also has a fluid for it. (Not the same fluid as the V6 above). (Probably the same fluid used in BMW's that use the same transmission, but again, not sure).

Go by what your book says. Not needed right now at this low milage.

On my trip yesterday to Red Wing, MN I averaged 30.1 mpg with my 4.6 on the way there, and took a different route back which averaged 29.8 mpg, and both directions used the cruise control set at 70 mph.

It's not the flattest drive since going to Southern and Southeast MN is somwhat hilly in spots, but I have to say I'm impressed since my GF's 06' V6 Sonata does around the same MPG numbers:D

I even had a couple times of passing pokey drivers hitting 115mph with ease:D

My two friends who were with even though they were shaking their heads and the passing thought is was impressive and complimented on the "very smooth comfortable ride at any speed" as they stated.:)

I have to say I’m envious of everyone’s great MPG. Using the odometer and gas receipts, I’m getting 13 to 16 mpg city driving and 23 to26 mpg on the interstate, with the cruise control set at 70.

On city driving with frequent, very short trips (about 4 miles) and stop and go traffic I get about 16 mpg. On the freeway I do get about 29 mpg at 75 mph.

I've been wondering about this... and incidentally, I happened to run into a buddy of mine who is a state trooper. I followed him back (about 50 miles) at around 85-90mph and my average mileage was 28.5 vs the ~24 I usually get at ~55-60mph. It was interesting to say the least.

Incidentally, I was very surprised (and pleased) with the ride... butter smooth.

My 3.8 with under 1000 at start of trip from Evansville IN to south of Nashville through some hills etc at around 73-75 I got 25.5 Not bad for first trip. I hope to get the 28-29 others are getting. Will be going on same trip in a week or so and hope to see even better.

If this was on non-interstate highways, this is not bad due to the slowing down, speeding up, getting behind slower traffic, going through towns, etc.

If this was on Interstates, it should be better. Let us know after your next trip.

Update second trip Evansville IN to Nashville got 26.9 up from 25.5 on last trip....must be breaking in. Not bad for a 290hp six. I find it has decent acceleration when passing on interstate, not as good as my previous Impala SS but not bad....can't even compare ride of two cars...Genesis by a mile.

I;ve had good results with freeway mileage. First road trip resulted in 26 MPG over 400+ miles at about 80 MPH. I consider this an excellent result. Around town is a little different. I have a 4 mile commute to work with other driving pretty much limited to city driving. Lucky to ge 16 MPG
