  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all, new to the forum, hope all is well.

I'm currently in the market to get myself a newer vehicle with a bit more refinement (Coming from a 2003 Saturn Vue). I've mostly been searching through Lexus IS models, Infiniti G-37's, and the Hyundai Genesis, and the Genesis is definitely winning me over more and more, especially for the value for my dollar. That being said, I'm trying to figure out what would be the better option for the long haul as a daily driver (~60 miles per day).

I have found a couple of options that I'm a bit torn between and was wanting to get a bit of insight on which may be the better value option.

Car 1: 2010 4.6 with 105k miles for $10,000

Car 2: 2012 3.8 with 71k miles for $13,000

Both are black on black, both have solid Carfax reports (though the 4.6 had a very minor incident reported a year ago)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to hopefully being behind the wheel of a Genesis within the next week or two!

Welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up. For me personally - I'd take the 2012 because there are a few design updates (mid-cycle refresh) that I really like and I'd feel better about the lower mileage. I'm sure others will follow with other advice and reasons why they'd take one over the other...

Hey, thanks! I really would like the V8 but I can't help but to be conflicted with the V6 having the 34k less miles on it. Looking forward to some further input.

As noted elsewhere this forum, the early 2012 models have the brand new Hyundai 8-speed transmission, and had a lot of transmission problems that required replacement of the transmission by Hyundai under warranty. It's hard to know if the 2012 you are looking at was produced early in the 2012 model run, or late in the run when the problem was already fixed.

For a daily driver of 60 miles per day, I personally would not get a vehicle that is out of warranty, but that is just my bias.

IMO, the 3.8 has plenty of power.

I appreciate the heads up on the potential issue. I'm not sure how early on the transmissions were resolved but the vehicle in question was assembled in May according to the sticker. As for being under warranty, I've honestly never had a vehicle under warranty over the year so I wouldn't know much of a difference having driven 100k-200k mile cars regularly.

IMO, there is nothing to discuss. Newer model with less miles makes much more sense. The newer model may have some other advantages but I'm not knowledgeable enough to do a comparison, but every year usually has some tweaks.

For most of my driving life I've gone for the optional big engine but the Genesis V-6 is adequate. Acceleration is good and the top speed more than you'll ever use. I've not found a place to go over 125 anyway.

Power in the V6 of the first generation is better than that of the second. I do feel the V6 is very good for the 2012. I wonder if the transmission would be covered at this point in time if any known issues popped up. Or perhaps it was already replaced under warranty...

I had a blast in the 2012 v6, I had a base v6 and never had any issues. I did test drive the v8 it does have more of a weight penalty, and I feel that 0-60 is very close after that the v8 will take off. but if your comparing to the 4.6 then I'd go with the v6 over it any day, the 4.6 doesn't make much more than the v6 and weighs about 200lbs more if I remember right. The 2012 v6 is a lot more nimble compared to the v8. Oh the styling of the 2012 looks much better than the 2010, this is subjective.

Genesis Motors, I have looked through the Carfax regarding the V6 and I don't see anything mentioning the transmission being replaced, just regular maintenance history. Should I be concerned buying one without a prior transmission replacement?

I drove my like I stole it, never had an issue with the trans, not to say crap won't happen. Oh the v6 2012 base is faster than a BMW 335i light modded. We tested this all the way up to 130 or so.

Most impressive. G2's had a weight gain that probably would negate that.

The weight gain for Gen 2 with AWD is almost 700 lbs that is huge amounts weight. Now it loses to an Audi Q5. Not sure what they gonna do with the 3.8 now the 3.3t is in the market.

It'll be the 5.0 V8 that will disappear, because of the 3.3.

So, is there anything in particular I should be aware of when I go check out the car? Genesis Motors mentioned the transmission but how likely is it to have a bad trans at 71k?

Many of the folks on this thread live in one dimension: performance/speed. Remember that there are other who live in many dimensions and the v8 may stay around for them. There may be more of us than you suppose.

At 71000 miles the car is due for some major service. So is the 2010 at 105,000. Check the prices for brake fluid flush, transmission fluid change, front brake pads?.

The V8 ain't gonna stick around if it can't meet EPA standards. The cars are getting bigger and heavier, and needs more power to just even out the performance, the V8 can stick around but I bet we will see a turbo version of the v8. If Genesis really wants to compete with the high performance Germanys its needed.

Good point 1FstYota. That is an entirely new dimension to consider.

I think as F1 tech trickle down and become affordable, we will see a lot more of small displacement/electric motors that will make north of 500hp while sipping on fuel. Hate to say this but this is just how the new trend will be. in 2030 the new G80 sport will have 500+ horsepower with a 1.3 liter turbo electric motor.
