  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi,

this may seem like a very silly question, but how do I play music from my phone over the USB? I have not been able to get it to work on my phone (Nexus 6P) but the other night a friend was in my car and he simply plugged his phone into the USB port near the AUX and was able to play music.

When I plug in my Nexus 6P i have a few options displayed on my phone:

Charge Phone
Transfer Photos
Transfer Files
Use as MIDI device

none of them makes "media" show up in the Media section.

I am assuming I can use a USB thumb drive but I can't figure out why my phone isn't an option and an iPhone is.

Thanks in advance,

Z

Nobody else uses an Android phone? =(

also, fwiw, I have an 2015 ultimate, so no Android Auto

By default, iPhone shows up as storage when a USB connection is made. Apple doesn't give you a lot of choices. Android, on the other hand, has a bunch of stuff relating to USB. My guess is there is a setting. I googled for "setting show as storage android phone" and got a page with google's "People Always Ask" section possibly referring to the latest version of Android:

The USB connection option has been changed (very old versions of Android required the debugging option to have the storage show up on USB).

Plug the USB cable into the phone. You can change the USB settings so that your phone will sync, charge, etc. ...
Touch and drag the notification bar down. ...
Touch Connected as a media device. ...
Touch the desired option (e.g., Camera (PTP)). ...
The USB connection option has been changed.

I think most newer phones requires some drivers for android, plus it might have trouble reading the partitions on the phones.
