Need Opinions on this Trade

So I currently drive a 2011 Genesis Coupe (2.0 base model) and it has 51k miles on it. I am looking into Genesis sedans and found a 2011 Genesis (3.8) with 88k miles for $13k. I'm going to the dealership tomorrow to take a look but I just wanted thoughts on possibly trading in my coupe and getting the sedan.

My coupe has an equivalent KBB value as the sedan, but I will be willing to pay up to $1.5k difference for the sedan. I am the first and only owner of the coupe, and the carfax for the sedan shows 1 owner. I have about $5k of mods in the coupe (front bumper, headlights, tailights, head unit w/ nav & back-up cam, BOV, intake, catback exhaust, etc.). I know these mods might it more difficult for a trade-in and there's a chance they won't add value.

Appreciate all thoughts on this.

Two things come to mind and looks like you are considering them. The mods will add very little value to most buyers. Back up camera is a nice touch though.
Value aside, the dealer has rent, lights, phone bill, etc. Is $1500 enough to cover the cost? Is it more beneficial for him to have a coupe over a sedan to sell?

I think I'd approach him a bit different than a regular sale. Sit down with the idea that hey, I want to swap my car for that car of equal value. I know you have costs involved for paperwork and still have to pay the light bill, but what can we work out that makes us both happy? Do let us know how it works out, if it does.

Well first thing all the mods you listed just hurt your value, because now the dealership has a coupe that's been modded and to them they think its been hot-rodded. To be honest you're better off taking off all your mods and revert it to stock to get a better trade in value, or sell your car to a specific crowd then buy a sedan.

Your coupe has a 10/100,000 warranty on the powertrain. Your coupe is modded to suit your preferences. Unless you suddenly need a 4-door sedan, why give up those benefits and spend extra $ too? In the end, you'd still have a 2011 vehicle. And, if you buy the sedan you'll have a vehicle without ANY warranty coverage.

If possible, you may get a better deal going up a few years, say 2013 or 14.

You are absolutely right. I plan on negotiating down to $10k or so. The KBB has the sedan at $9k. Again, I haven't seen it in person yet (going later today), so I can't speak to its condition other than what I've seen in pictures.

This is the only used genesis sedan for sale in my area, unfortunately.

Be sure to get an extended warranty on that 2011 sedan. You will be SOL soon enough without one on a 7 model year-old car car with 88 thou miles on the odo.

By the way, these days it's easy to buy a car from outside your local area. I live in Richmond, VA and got my Genesis from a dealer in Atlanta. It 6 years old with only 36,000 on the odo. I have an extended warranty ($1,295) that I have already used twice. The warranty has nearly paid for itself already and it runs till 2024, or 120,000 miles. I'll likely pass the car on to my son this year, or next.
