  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

No Genesis Yet!
My 2004 Honda Accord just got demolished and I just need a car - rather than being too particular or going for my dream car I just want to get a car that runs and I can count on while being somewhat more comfortable and quiet than a Honda/Toyota.

This brought me to looking at Hyundai Sonata's as they can be had for $20K new and are quiet/smooth enough for me. I then realized I could just pickup a lease returned 2015 Genesis for just 5kish more. At the end of the day I need a car that will run well as my work and school schedule is quite busy and I don't have time for issues.

I am aware these genesis cars are reported to have low reliability and plagued with electrical issues, but my question is are they issues that will disable the car or can I count on them to keep running? I am going to test drive both today and I know the genesis will be no comparison, but something about a simple and reliable car appeals to me at this moment.

I am considering the 3.8 models figuring they may be more reliable than the 5.0

Most of the problems reported are nagging issues, like a rattling sunroof (even when closed), excessive engine vibration at idle, etc. There doesn't seem to be a solution for these problems in most cases. Others have had tire vibration problems, probably due to the OEM tires.

A few have had intermittent problems with loose electrical system connections that prevented the car from starting or flashed a lot of warning lights on the dash.

Personally, I would look at the new Accord, which I heard is a real step up from their previous models.

Thank you, that is exactly the helpful input I was looking for! I will probably checkout the accord as well today.

I've had three Sonatas, two Genesis. Mine have been nearly perfect, trouble free. Two minor issues covered under warranty. Others have had various problems and a few very annoying. In your situation, a brand new Sonata or Accord with warranty may be the best deal. Repairs on the technical aspects of any car today is expensive.

My Genesis 5.0 is one of the most reliable cars I have had. I am very happy with it.

As an update - I went the simpler route for now and picked up a 2018 Sonata SEL for $20,000+taxes. I test drove Accord, Camry, and Sonata, and it was a no brainer. I was shocked how the Accord was easily the worst of the three by a wide margin - having been an owner of 5 previous Honda's I was slightly disappointed.

I did look at the used Genesis' on the lot, but just don't want to deal with a used car right now.

Thanks everyone.

How was the Accord the worst - price, features, gas milage, ride, or what?
