Can head-up display be adjusted to work with polarized eyeglasses?

Hi all,

I can barely read my head-up display wearing polarized sunglasses. Can the head-up display be adjusted so that it can be seen clearly when wearing both polarized and unpolarized glasses? Thanks.
 
No. All HUD's do not work with polarized glasses. Do like others and get a good pair of driving glasses (like Seregeti Drivers).

The HUD image is a reflection off the windshield, and polarized lenses are designed to reduce or eliminate reflections. You can try and turn your sunglasses sideways as an experiment (obviously cannot wear them that way).

The limits of technology. Polarized help with glare but don't give better UV protection. I wear Transitions prescription glasses with an anti glare coating. Maybe something with anti-glare would give you what you want in sunglasses.
 
Polarized sunglasses give better protection.... against seeing your HUD. :biggrin:

.... on a more serious note... I purchased a pair of RX Polarized sunglasses a few years back when I had my Sonata. The NAV screen went blank, so... the glasses went back.

It's called AR (anti-reflective) coating. AR coatings reduce reflections that occur on glasses, camera lenses, and other similar lenses.

As you pointed out, AR coating is different than UV protection. Polycarbonate and most high-index plastic lens materials, have 100 percent UV protection built-in, so an extra UV lens treatment is not required for these lenses. Photochromic lenses also block 100 percent of the sun's UV rays without the need for an added UV lens treatment.
 
Invest in a pair of Serengeti Drivers. Used by professional pilots as they reduce glare, work with cockpit instrumentation, have glass lenses and are well built. Keep them in the car in the eyeglass holder and enjoy the views.

I could be wrong so please correct me but I don't think glass lenses will block UVA. Maybe with some kind of coating. Front windows are probably treated, not sure about side windows. I would stick with polycarbonate .

Does anyone use glass lenses anymore? If Serengeti does, then they probably have UV block coating (I assume).

There are many kinds of plastic lens materials such as:

  • 1.5 index (regular plastic, or CR-39) no UV protection unless UV coated, best optical quality, but thicker to due lower index.
  • 1.54 index (Trivex) - UV protection built in, and very strong, and very good optical quality
  • 1.586 index (polycarbonate) - UV protection built in, and very strong, but worst optical quality of any lens material (Trivex is better if strong lens is needed)
  • 1.6 - 1.74 index (high index) - UV protection built in, thinnest lenses, but not best optical quality.
Many high-end lenes come with AR coating these days. Some places will charge customers for UV coat and AR coat, even though lens comes that way by default (scam).
 
I still wear glass. Yes mine block UV, but... I also have a pair of plastic sunglasses for driving. My vision is crisper in glass, especially for reading.

In theory, if you could make sure that the polarized glasses were aligned to the HUD, it would not be a problem assuming that the polarization could be specified.
I don't know if that could introduce problems with viewing the NAV and LCD dash displays. Not sure that they are polarized at the same angle as the HUD.

Polarized filters for cameras are round and you can rotate them to get the effect you want, depending on where the reflected glare is coming from. But not many people would want to wear round sunglasses that could be rotated. But it is theoretically possible.

I cannot see the HUD in my 2017 G90 with polarized glasses. Other cars, specifically Lincoln that I know of, have overcome this in their HUD technology. It can be seen with any kind of sunglasses including polarized. Not sure if Genesis has updated their system since my 2017 .

Same here! I adjusted the brightness to high and lowered the display and it seems to help. It is better when the background is darker like blacktop.
 
I bought a (cheap) pair of non-polarized sunglasses from Shady Rays. They work very well with the HUD and I can see it clearly. They don't work as well with glare, but do help on a sunny day. They also have UV protection. I use them as needed.
