Air Filter (foam filter in cover) Question (4.6)

Today I changed the air filter in our 2011 4.6 sedan for the first time since I have owned the car. All went well until a foam filter which is normally attached to the inside of the cover fell out. This foam filter has the same footprint as the main filter but is considerably thinner. I noticed that it appeared to be held in place by a very thin post at each corner of the cover. But the 2 posts on the driver side had broken off. So without those posts it was hard to reattach this filter. I ended up putting some non-bonding mastic adhesive in those 2 corners and that gave it enough grip to stay in place while I reassembled everything.

Does anyone know if those 4 skinny posts are all that normally holds this upper filter in place? I'm all set now for a few years but I'm just curious as to how it is supposed to be attached.

Yes those little post are all that hold it in. Mine came loose also after several filter changes. I put a little form-a-gasket on the corners and it held it in.

Thanks for the response & verification that those posts are what hold that foam filter in. Much appreciated. I found the remnants of one of those little posts in the airbox.

As an aside when I was trying to get the airbox cover off so that I could see what was going on I had to undo an electrical connection on the snorkel. There was a clip on the bottom of the connector that you had to squeeze to release it. But just to make sure you didn't undo it by accident there was an insert that you had to remove before you could squeeze it. And this insert had its own release mechanism. Seemed like a bit of overkill.

What is the purpose of the foam filter? What harm to just remove?

If it makes any difference to you I removed mine a while back (after customizing my intake). I believe there was a thread on here which pretty much concluded that the foam filter was for noise suppression. I haven't noticed any difference getting rid of mine.

Someone I spoke to said it was to catch emission gases. I took it out and no problems.
