  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

He Didn't Wave

But for facts, look at Jackie Chan, he could pass for 40 and he's 56.

Chow Yun Fat is 71, true story, I remember seeing him in that movie with mira sorvino all those years ago..... who knew?

Saw my first G90 heading back from Denver yesterday. Driving up on it, I could tell it was one. I remember seeing a similarity picture between that and a S Class I think it was. Never once did I think it was that.

Anyways, drove up next to him on I-25N and looked over. I usually try and stay even with a driver if I give them a nod. He didn't so much as even blink. I was in my Genesis and figured he'd notice. Negative... Hopefully this wasn't because of snob-appeal and it was his lack of situational awareness. Usually, when someone is driving an "enthusiast" or "out-of-the-ordinary" car, they are aware of other cars on the road, as am I.

Cheers to ya

Dan

I saw a white Genesis G90 on I78 West going in to PA from Jersey yesterday morning and the gentleman driving did not wave. I was even more bummed as I was coming back to Jersey yesterday evening on I78 East when I saw a second gen Genesis 3.8 and this driver did not notice me either. Two strikes in same day :(

He probably thought you were in a Chrysler 300 lol.

Speaking of Chrysler 300. I pay inside for my gas and scan a card that gives me 10 cents off and a $4 touch free car wash. It's hard to distinguish what numbers are to which pump, and no they don't have them on the pump themselves. Only above. I told him the one with the white car and he said "oh the Chyrsler". Mannnnnn the pain I felt not correcting him lol he was so sure it was a Chrysler too. Oh well...

When you drive a car that makes it way too obvious that it borrows styling from other cars, that's what happens. I have to live with that every day on my 1st gen as well. The fact that the 2nd gen wing badge DOES resemble a Chrysler badge and a non-Chrysler fanboy or non-Genesis fanboy isn't going to notice the differences in them.

And on the flip side of the Genesis being super conservative/generic in styling and taking a little bit from a bunch of other cars, how about some mega-bland cars that stole styling items from the first gen within a couple years of the first gen coming out? lol...

Seems like stylists are running out of ideas. At work one day I was looking out the window at four cars in a row. My Genesis, Ford Fusion, Infiniti, Accura. Every car has something in common with another. Could be a headlight assembly shape, rear window profile, taillight assembly, etc. As distinct as they were, every car has influence from others. Aerodynamics is taking care of the profiles too.

From about 1954 to 1960 auto styles was some of the most distinctive. You would not confuse a Chrysler with anything at a half mile away. From any angle, you'd not confuse a '57, '58, or '59 Chevy from each other, From 100 yards. today you cannot tell a Kia from a Ford Focus or Genesis from an Audi or Chrysler.

But that's the thing, I don't think the 2nd Gen looks like any other car; that's why I like it. Sure, the badge may look Chrysler's but it's way smaller. If it looks like Chrysler, why don't people think it's a bentley? It resembles the Bentley even more.

On a side note, I hope companies keep making sedans. Ford pretty much pulled out of the game so I hope brands don't follow. When the moment comes that I drive a SUV as a daily and it's not the wife's, consider me 6 feet under.

Hilarious that you say that. I recently posted a picture of my 1st gen from the back and someone called it a Bentley. I corrected him, not that I wouldn't rather be driving a Flying Spur.

Today, you may need glasses if you can't tell cars apart. I assume you are an enthusiast, as am I, so I can distinguish cars from one another. I can write you a prescription if need be... Only joking, bud!

I had someone the other day complimenting me on my car. We chatted for a few minutes and he mentioned he wasn't sure how Genesis was able to use the emblem because it resembles Bentley's so closely.

I am also in 100% agreement with you regarding SUV/CUVs. they are convenient at times but I will never have one as my daily driver. I'm not interested in that at all.

The majority of the auto-driving public are familiar with Chrysler’s and recognize their emblem. Far fewer are familiar with the Bentley winged emblem and so I’d expect considerably more Chrysler comparisons to the winged Genesis badge

Agree with that. Couple of weeks ago I was in a gas station and a guy, about mid 60's thought it may have been a Bentley. Evidently he knows of them and the emblem, but he never heard of a Genesis.

I had at least 3 people around gas stations ask me what kinda car it is. None of them had even heard of Genesis but ALL of them agreed that it is a very nice looking car. :)

Any time someone is impressed with anything about it and asks "what kind of car is that?", "Just a Hyundai" is my favorite reply, honestly.

Small changes can add up and to the general public, they may not know the difference. Hence, people saying Chrysler and Bentley. To us, we know the differences. Putting the vehicles next to one another would surely give the public a different view on the emblems.

I ask them what they think it is first and tell them it's a Hyundai. The looks are quite amusing lol

Maybe his G90 is registered as a Hyundai at the DMV and he is very sensitive about it?

I find here in LA most folks are totally oblivious to the cars around them. I had a G90 go right by me on the street right next to where I live and did not even notice me. I was surprised and was looking to wave. Any other reasons that folks ascribe to the lack of waving I would guess are just a manifestation of their own insecurities.

I guess I'll go back to my original point in my first reply to this thread: Is it not possible that every single person who buys any particular type of car isn't a car guy, enthusiast, or forum nerd? Not everyone is out to pretend to be friendly with random strangers in moving traffic. Mini's, Miatas, Jeeps, Subarus, etc all have a pretty well known "wave" culture and honestly, when someone is just trying to go about their day driving whatever they felt like buying, it's kind of annoying to be "expected" to wave at strangers.

Sort of a self-diagnosis, eh Doc? Feeling a bit insecure 'cause you didn't get a wave back.
