  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Is a 2015 Genesis G80 5.0 possible?

I see a Genesis advertised online from a dealership that says it is a 2015 G80 5.0. Is that possible? I thought G80's only came out later, at least in the states. If this is possible does anyone know where I can find literature?

The second generation Hyundai Genesis was introduced in 2015 model year. In 2017 it was "branded" as a Genesis Motors G80, even though being almost identical to the 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis.

If it is a 2015, then technically in the USA it is a Hyundai Genesis and not a G80. However, some 2017-2018 G80's are apparently being registered by Hyundai Finance as Hyundai Genesis G80.

I’ll stick to actually answering your question: No, it is not possible. There was no G80 (or Genesis Brand) in NA in 2015.

Its seems something must be wrong. The trunk has a G80 badge on it. I verified it was the right car I was seeing that is for sale. My thought, maybe the previous owner stuck it on there but also my thought is shouldn't a name brand dealership make sure it is correct and take it off if it isn't?

Correct, it is a Genesis sedan and the 2015 equivalent of the G80 that came out in 2017. The OP says it has a G80 badge on it. You can buy them and stick it on, same as people here have replaced the H with wings. We know, of course, that a car dealer would never do anything like that to make a sale or up the price.

You can also run the VIN and see that it is a Hyundai.

It's a used car. Maybe it has a new sound system. Maybe it has a different exhaust system. Maybe somebody added a spoiler. Maybe it's been repainted.

In any case, it's a used '15 Hyundai Genesis. Ask the dealer why it has a G80 badge. It is a misrepresentation if you push it.

The majority of Hyundai Genesis owners have replaced their flying H's on the Genesis trunk with the wings. That is because in Korea, the 2009-2016 Genesis was not sold as a Hyundai, and they had no Hyundai logos anywhere on them (wing logos instead), and enterprising people have gone to dealer parts departments in Korea and purchased the wings and imported to them for sale in the USA, starting with the 2009 model year.

Even many US dealers got into the act and replaced the flying H with the wings on the trunk and/or wheel center caps. Replacements with the Korean versions are available for the badge on the trunk, wheel caps, and even airbag on the steering wheel, for model years 2009-2015 (but the parts may vary by model year). None of the wing replacement were sold by Hyundai Motor America, and were imported by independent firms such as Koran Auto Parts, etc.

I would bet that most Hyundai Genesis cars have the wings, even in the US (not when sold new, but after purchase). So I don't think it is misrepresentation unless the dealer claims it is a G80, but I can see how some clerk doing internet sales can get confused. After all, Genesis Motors finance is registering real G80's as a Hyundai.

I did answer the question. You just don't want to admit that the 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis is almost identical to the 2018 G80.

The whole controversy/separation of 2G vs G80 is the only thing about our forums that I dont enjoy. Call my car a 2G, a G80, a Genesis, a Hyundai, a Chrysler 300 (lol)... it doesn't change what it is, a great car. The only thing that wouldn't make sense is calling it a g90 or g70.

Wrong (again) - please do show me where I ever said that? I just stuck to answering the actual question that was asked versus veering off to point out the COMPLETEY UNRELATED issue of G80’s being registered as a Hyundai versus a Genesis in some states.

That's why I suggested he ask the dealer if it is a G80. If the dealer claims it's a G80, it's called misrepresentation. However, it's not likely to reap any great reward for the prospective buyer, such as a fraud award.

If the car is advertised as a 2015 Genesis G80, it's a misrepresentation. If the car is advertised as a 2015 Hyundai Genesis, but "has" a G80 badge on the trunk, it is not a misrepresentation.

It's as simple as that. If this is a private seller, there's not much you can do but call them out on it. If it's a dealer, there may be larger implications with advertising a car as a "2015 Genesis G80 5.0" when, in fact, it's a 2015 Hyundai Genesis (whether us forum nerds know or not that the G80 is just a rebadged 2g Hyundai Genesis).

At any rate, the fact that a previous owner put a G80 badge on the trunk(as we've even seen people do on the forums here), doesn't instantly make it an issue, but the OP definitely makes it sound like the dealership is lying about what it is. This isn't exactly excusable because every dealership runs the VIN of every trade in to make sure things like options, trim levels etc are represented properly.

The reason this has come up, is that a very few G80 and G90 owners have complained about people who own a Hyundai Genesis posting in threads about the G80 or G90. They apparently think owning a G80 or G90 makes them a member of a special club, and they try to keep all others out of their threads on this forum. Fortunately, there are only a very few people like that on this forum.

What happens if a dealer sells a real 2017-18 G80 and calls it a Genesis G80, but Hyundai Finance (and the DMV) call it a Hyundai Genesis G80? Is that fraud?

The constant bickering typically seen between the same members in numerous threads is by far the least enjoyable aspect of this Genesis forum. Discussions about Genesis Corp. & the vehicles can be informative and interesting but the personal attacks and put-downs of other members is tiresome.

Trust me, we have it REAL good here as far as childish BS on the forums. If that's as bad as it gets, we're golden. Your head would explode trying to deal with the childish bickering on any of the cheap popularly modded car forums from back in the day. I'll assume the VW, Honda, and other populated forums are even still just as bad as they were 10+ years ago.

Oh I’m certain there are many forums worse than this with regards to bad behavior and bickering. This “we’re not as bad as THEY are” observation, however, doesn’t justify nor excuse the personal attacks and belittling comments and contributes little to the forum.
