I had the oil changed on my 4.6 this week at Capitol Hyundai in San Jose CA and I thought I would share my experience and observations with the forum:
1. This particular dealership will not let you schedule an appointment for later than 11 AM. This policy makes it difficult for those of us who would like to have routine servicing done during a typical lunch break.
2. Oil change took way too long. Even with an appointment it took the dealership just shy of 2 hours to perform the work. They also lubed a squeaky door hinge but really, 2 hours?
3. The work was completed and the car exterior was washed so all in all not a bad experience. I was able to play around with the Equus so at least I was entertained. I jumped in my baby and headed out. Upon pulling into the parking lot at my job about 10 miles from the dealership I noticed the smell of burning oil. I immediately parked the car. I opened the door and almost puked when I saw smoke pouring out from underneath my <2 month old car. I shut her down and popped the hood and could see that the oil filler cap had been left off and a good portion of the engine was saturated with oil. Son of a....
I checked the oil level and it looked to be about a quart or so low depending on where they filled it to originally so no damage to the engine likely occurred and no idiot lights ever illuminated.
On a positive note, the dealership was very responsive when I reported the problem. They arrived at my location within about 30 minutes and immediately determined that they would need to return the vehicle to their shop to clean everything up. Upon my request they also agreed to replace all of the filters in the engine compartment. When the car was returned to me later in the day everything seemed to be cleaned up to the best of their ability. It's been 2 full days since the incident and I still occasionally catch the whiff of burning oil but I guess that's to be expected until everything makes its way out of all the nooks and crannies.
Although the dealership promptly addressed their problem I am a bit disappointed that they did not make any additional gestures to win back my business. At the very least I would have expected the cost of the oil change be refunded.
I understand that people make mistakes but this does not instill confidence in the Hyundai Service Department. Yes, this could have happened anywhere but of the dozens of oil changes that I have had performed at numerous dealerships I have never had anything like this happen before.
