  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

When it rains it pours... Just got the wife's genny out of the body shop (1k deductible) and yesterday a stone from a dump truck hit about 6 inchs to the left of the mirror. The crack goes down and bends under the mirror. While crack replacement is free, replacement falls under comprehensive so another $1000.

My local dealer (Bowie MD) was not helpful over the phone.

Recommendations? I want to have OEM glass installed.

Many dealers sub out glass work to specialists. Check your insurance though, some states require full glass coverage or you may already have it, or a lower deductible. I don't understand if crack replacement is free, isn't this a crack? Or did you mean repair?

I'd call a couple of local shops as they may be more willing to work a better price than the big chains, but check them anyway.

I just had a door window replaced. There is no aftermarket available for it so they had to order OEM from a dealer.

A year or so ago I had the windshield replaced in my 2013 Tech with lower heat, rain sensing and lane departure; I believe the OEM was in the $1000 range and the aftermarket one I chose without acoustic was about $475. I'm getting on in age but noticed no difference between the acoustic and non-acoustic in sound transmission.

If you have the Lane Departure Warning System, 1) make sure they install the correct windshield, and 2) you will likely need to have the LDWS camera/alignment recalibrated after replacement (about $100 at the dealer).

I never had to have my LDWS realigned or calibrated and it worked as it did before. As an aside I don't use my LDWS as it is more of a gimicky PITA than anything else.

UPDATE: It's been a few weeks since the new windshield has been installed. Found a local installer in MD (DC Metro area) that came out to the house. Identical windshield (no lane departure) to OEM. $310.
Have driven it at speed, no wind noise at all and no water leaks.
