  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Our second gens even say it's a Genesis...

I am perhaps to aware of my surroundings. Got off work the other day, I believe Wednesday, and hopped in my car. I usually don't look start at the dash cluster screen as I turn on the car. However, today I did for some reason. I peered at it the whole time as it was going through its' paces.

Now, there is an image, while it is starting, of the rear end of the car. The image shows a white car like mine. I don't know if you all have color matching images but my car happens to be white, same as the image. While it started up, this image appeared and I couldn't help but notice something; the rear badge on the car image was the Genesis badge!!!

For you guys and girls that have a spare moment, go take a look at this. I had to turn my car off again and turn it on so I could properly look at the image. Lo and behold, I was correct. I know that this car was sold in Korea as a Genesis in the first place. Hyundai just took the car and put a Hyundai badge on the back. I guess they felt it wasn't warranted to change the technology in the system for the Hyundai markets. I was pretty amazed by this if you can't tell.

Take a minute, start your car looking carefully at the display cluster between your tachometer and speedometer.

Disclosure: I can only say this for individuals with the Tech or Ultimate packages with the 7" instrument cluster.

Edit: I'm an idiot. The rear of the car shows up on the cruise control screen and the compass screen. Very small but still there. It's not on start-up, only the two screens mentioned.

I’ve always wondered why some Genesis cars going back 10 years or so, had a genesis badge on the trunk and other a Hyundai badge.

My mom has 2 neighbors with 2012 Genesis’ one has a Hyundai badge the other has Genesis wings, both bought at same dealer within a few weeks of each other..

Switching the badges is pretty easy. Some of us 2nd Gener's do that. There's a first gen's in town that did the switch. Looks cleaner in my opinion.

Neither of my moms neighbors switched badges. Maybe the dealers did but these ladies didn’t both are older ladies in their late 70s.

Because some G1 and G2 owners didn’t want other people to realize that they were actually driving a Hyundai (though a very nice one).

Others didn’t care what other people thought and just liked the car for the value it was. Some folks also rebadged their G2’s as G80’s - I don’t get it, but “to each his own”.

Back in 2008 the first Genesis Sedan was sold in South Korea without any Hyundai badges anywhere on the car (only wings). Hyundai Motor America decided to import the Genesis Sedan (starting with 2009 model year) and sell it as a Hyundai because they wanted to improve the reputation of the Hyundai brand in the USA. According to then HMA CEO John Krafcik, the majority of Camry, Accord, Corolla, and Civic buyers never even looked at the equivalent Hyundai vehicles (Sonata, and Elantra). The HMA mantra became "improve the brand."

Some enterprising small businesses (like Korean Auto Imports website) went to the parts department of dealers in South Korea (or however they get spare parts over there) and bought up the wing logos for the trunk, hood, wheels caps, and steering wheel (the entire airbag) and began selling them on the internet in the USA. There were some very popular threads on this forum on how to replace the flying H's and put on the wings. I replaced mine in early 2009, except for the steering wheel (which requires a brand new airbag to do it right).

After a couple of years, some dealers started buying and installing the wings from the Korean parts importers (not available via official HMA parts channels). Some of the dealers converted their inventory, and some just offered it as a dealer installed option for a fee, to replace the flying H with wings.

Even HMA eventually threw in the towel with the 2nd generation in 2015 MY, and put wings on the airbag, and I think the only flying H was on the trunk by that time (if my memory is correct). By 2017 MY, they finally decided to sell them as a separate brand (along with Equus) under the Genesis brand name, and remove all flying H's from the cars.

Are you ever going to get around to buying a Genesis, like most members here, or are you just here to belittle '09 - '16 owners?

Well, since you asked so nicely: I'm not enamored with the currenet G80/G90 - too big and the driving dynamics are markedly un-sporty. So I'm waiting to test drive a G70 to see if I like that - if you can magically arrange that now, then... otherwise, I just have to wait until Genesis actually gets them to market here in the the USA like everyone else.

And - wow, you are really sensitive about owning a Hyundai aren't you? I see you did put the wings on to try to hide that fact? Sorry, but I don't personally buy any other explanation for why folks would replace the Hyundai logo with the wings - regardless of how they might try to spin it. Rebadging a 15/16 Genesis as a G80 as some did is even more silly and an attempt to further hide what they really own, in my opinion. I don't get why some folks feel the need as they are nice cars and very good values on their own merit. But, as I said, to each his own - do what makes you happy, but don't expect everyone else to have the same opinion!

If I trusted that I could safely and cleanly replace my Hyundai "H" on the trunk of my 2015 I'd do it, and for the soul reason that I think the wings look cooler than the H.

As a side note, don't go spouting off that I'm embarrassed about driving a Hyundai. I'm not. Period. I've driven KIA's and Hyundai's for almost 10 years now and done so proudly. I love when people look the car over or drive with me and comment how shocked they are how high end and upscale the car is. Many have said they can't believe how much you get for the price, be it a budget Hyundai or KIA sedan or one of the luxury models.

So yeah, I'm fine with folks liking the wings vs. the big H and more power to them if they want to swap them out.

I tell people I drive a Hyundai just to see the reaction, love it when they are surprised.

There's no reason not to. In fact, it might change people's perception on what Hyundai can build versus pretending it's something else!

Why don't you go drive a Stinger? It should share many similar driving properties with the G70. As for size, I've always preferred the 5-series / midsized luxury cars. My only wish would be a split folding rear seat. Other than that, I'm very impressed with Hyundai/Genesis engineers.

The dealer changed the badges on my car before it was mine so I didn't have a choice on that. With that said, I like the wing logo better than the H logo. I don't have a problem with the H logo at all, and if that's all that was ever available then that would've been fine. But the Genesis logo is also Hyundai's; the fact that there's a wing and an H logo might mean your beef is actually with the company. To me, the wing just suits the car better (in my case it worked out because the dealer did the badging already, but I probably would've switched them anyway). I don't care to hide, but like the other poster I enjoy telling people it's a Hyundai and watching their reactions.

I like the winged logo. We all know it is a Hyundai at heart.

Well I'll tell them that, but to be honest build quality is still kinda lacking.

I just looked up their 2016 awards. The Genesis came in #3 in its category after the Lexus LS & Audi A7. I can live with that 😎

Well I'll tell them that, but to be honest build quality is still kinda lacking.

Even though JD Power just ranked Genesis brand #1 in quality, and KIA was#2 and Hyundai #3.

Yet the "premium" brands folks always say are the best of the best pretty much failed on the list as far as quality and troubles goes?

Hmmmmm.

Mercedes? BMW? Nope. Winners in J. D. Power quality survey will surprise you

I'll disagree, having come from a Lexus, and having owned MBZ, Audi, and BMW in the past.. When comparing apples to apples, i.e. models in the same class, my impressions of the G80 are that is it right in the ball park with build and material quality.

It is still a Hyundai the same as a Lexus is a Toyota or an Infinity is a Nissan, They are the Bougie upscale version of their lower model vehicles.

My impressions of the Lexus was that the build quality of the Lexus was no better than the Toyota, My wife's 2017 Camry, thus far no issues in 14 months of ownership, but her 2007 had an ABS issue, Hybrid Battery issue, and a Rattle in the console HVAC Vents form day one the dealer could never resolve.

My 2015 Lexus RCF:

Failed Sunroof - known issue with an LSB for all 2015-2016 RC models
Failed Fuel Pump - known issue with an LSB for all 2015-2016 RCF models in 2016, then a full recall in 2018 for the issue.
Failed Auto Wing/Spoiler - known issue requiring ECU update all 2015 cars
Failed Power window Regulator - known issue with recall for all 2015 RC cars.
Noise and Dusting Issues with Brakes on RCF models leading to a customer satisfaction recall to replace the pads.

This was an $85K top of the line, flagship coupe for Lexus in 2015, and the 2015-2016 vehicles had tons of issue, most seem to have been worked out in the 2018 model, then Lexus brings out the LC to replace the RC, so the RC essentially will have a 5 year model life.

Maybe, I should rephrase that, the build quality is good, but I could just be picky and so far I found that compared to other luxury brands, this car has rattles, squeeks and all sorts of weird quirks it shouldn't have, and again maybe I'm just sensitive but I pay attention to other cars that I drive, and half of them doesn't show the same issues this does for Hyundai luxury brand.

so far I have got them to replace a airbag with cracked emblem, two rear interior seals, seat track, headlight and pano roof seals which seems to be an issues for everyone.

As far as materials its def up theres with the rest, I've test driven 3 LS460s now that have wore out interior surfaces in 2 years with low mileage, so I give Hyundai props when it comes to interior wear and tear.

see my above post.. no manufacturer is without fault. I've had BMWs with squeaks, Audi's with rattles, and MBZ with broken interior parts.
