  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Today when I tried to unlock my car, nothing happened, light on the FOB worked, so, i manually unlocked the car, would only start if I put the FOB in the holder, when the car turned over, the touch display was blank and the TPMS light was on, but everything else seemed fine, got down the road(by the autoparts store), turned the car off, turned it back on, everything came back on fine, just radio reset like the battery was disconnected. I did check the terminals, they are on there good, ideas, or is this my battery saying, "replace me".

Sorry, 2012 Hyundai 3.8

It's possible your battery has suffered some internal damage, which happens most often in the hot summer months when the plastic parts of the battery become weaker.

Besides checking all the battery connections, tighten up the nuts holding down the buss inside the fuse panel. That was a problem on the 2015 models, so it may be a long shot on the 2012.

I could see it would be the heat, there is no date on the battery, and it is a hyundai battery from a dealer, there cant be any way it would be the original? I did ask for a new battery when I purchased the car, however, the dealer is very very shady, i drive an additional 20 miles to go to another dealer for service.

The OEM batteries from the factory use a Korean made battery, and any replacements by a dealer are not going to be the same exact battery, even if it has a Hyundai label on it.

Go to AutoZone or Advance Auto parts and have them test your battery. If you need a new one, then get one of their Gold batteries or a Platinum one (which would be an AGM). Check their online websites for sales they may be running on batteries.

There is no reason to buy a battery from a dealer for a Hyundai Genesis. You may loose your radio and other settings, but other than that it is not hard to change the battery on a Genesis.

Take your car to AutoZone, Sam's Club or some other parts store. Most will load test your battery for free then you will know if you are needing a replacement. If this is the original battery you are about due for replacement anyway as batteries last about 5 years on average. Most places that sell batteries will have a replacement, my preferred source is Sam's Club, then Walmart, Costco, etc.

Those are good places to buy batteries, but the size required by a Hyundai Genesis (H8 or H9, depending on model year) are hard to find at those places. AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts usually carry them or can get one in a day or two.

Im going to take it to advanced auto part tomorrow, im buying the battery tonight, ill have them load test it tomorrow, if i need it, then ill have them put it in, if not and its something else, ill just refund it. Online deal for a gold after the core refund, $131.53, anyone needing a battery, they have $20 right now, MKT25 code gives 25%off($40). Thanks for input. Just seems weird the car still starts, just no radio display.

Any respectable battery store will have a plug in to supply juice so yo don't lose settings. If you want to DIY, you can buy one for about $10

You cannot properly load test a new battery that is not in the system and run through some charge cycles. It is possible with an old school load tester but first you must fully charge the battery, let it rest then put a load on it and observe the voltage drop over a period of time.

Update, had the battery tested at AAP, said the battery was fine, voltage fine, had new one put in, will see what happens, checked all fuses, fuses fine, if it happens again, ill check the relays. I do have the car under warranty still, i just dislike the local dealer, may have to bite the bullet and take in for service anyways.

Open driver's door, open fuse panel, unplug big yellow fuse. Plug in fuse, see what happens.

Sorry for the late reply, that was exactly the issue! Thanks for the reply!

*TopoJoe* I think it is possible that you have/had the original battery.
I have a 2012 Genesis 3.8 and we just replaced the original battery(no date code but we bought the car new) last December due to some weird little occurrences, not because the car wouldn't crank. Bought it at AAP and my wife got them to put the new battery in for free.
... Would you please help me understand what pulling the big yellow fuse out does?

Well I know it does not reset the radio as all the presets are all there.

I would try it and see what happens.

When I had to get a new batt for our 2012 in Feb, I wen to AZ...I had an extra batt so I got an extra $10 gift card, the batt was on sale, and I got additional 10% military discount. Heat definitely kills a batter but being located back in the trunk, it's not subjected to the 'heat' cyles and extremes presented to a battery that's mounted under the hood next to the engine. My guess is whatever batt you had, it just aged out. They do that. And new ones fail - our OEM batt when we bought the car in Jun 2011 only lasted less than a year. We were living in SE Arizona as well. The car came up to OH with us when we moved in 2014 and that batt lasted until this past Feb. So whether or not it's an OEM, if it won't hold a charge or has no cranking capacity left, it is, indeed, TOAST.
