If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

30K KM - new rotors and wheels peeling?

Hello everyone,

I’ve been debating a purchase of a beautiful 2015 V8 HTRAC here in Canada, but a few things seem odd to me.

The dealer says they put brand new rotors on just recently - why would a car need new rotors at only 30,000KM (less than 18,500 miles)?

Also - the finish on the OEM 19” rims is peeling very dramatically in the inside portion of each rim. I was told that Hyundai Canada will not re-finish the rims, as cosmetic is not covered under warranty. I won’t purchase the car with the rims in this condition, but more than anything it just has me feeling puzzled as to why this would happen.

I've only owned my '15 for just over a month, she has 24k miles now and after seeing your post I checked my wheels and while 3 are perfect, one of the rears looks like yours with the paint peeling off in multiple spots. It's one thing I didn't notice when I bought the car. I'm within the 3/36 until April 2019, so it looks like I'll be taking her in sometime soon. Does the paint warranty apply to wheels?

It is common practice these days to replace rotors when pads are needed. The question to me is, why did it need brakes after so few miles? Though not many miles for a 3 year old car, it may have seen a lot of city driving, stop and go that can be hard on a car.

As for the wheels, exposure to road salt would be one possibility. Some cities here are using a brine solution now that is supposed to be tough on cars.

I'd probably pass on that one unless a really good price.

They won’t cover cosmetic under any circumstance, so I’ve been told. I was ready to hand over a $5000 down payment and buy the car, but they refused to fix the wheels, so I walked, unfortunately. The car looks to be in immaculate shape otherwise.

Paint on the wheels is covered like the normal paint warranty, 3yr/36k. At least that's the way we've always honored it, and haven't had issues that I know of. Getting them resprayed shouldn't be too expensive. We have a wheel guy that comes to our dealership that will do it for $100/wheel.

Hmmm interesting.... I was told it wasn’t covered according to Hyundai Canada :(

That could be true. I don't know how Canadian warranties vary from the US. It's very well possible it isn't covered since salt is on the road almost year round.

Yeah I’ve started asking around and it doesn’t look like wheels or paint are ever covered in Canada. Shocking to me, but I guess I’m just out of the loop. I wonder if there’s any other way I can get them to fix or possibly substitute the wheels for a new/different set. I’ve got a decent price on things figured out with the dealer, so I really don’t know what more I can ask for without becoming that irritating customer.

I just took my car in for 30k service today and had a couple warranty issues for them to look at. One was the gas cap, somehow came apart into 3 pieces, covered by warranty. Next was peeling of all 4 wheels, also covered. Shortly after buying the car in June I noticed one wheel was pretty bad then realized all four had at least some degree of the finish peeling off. I'm getting 4 new wheels tomorrow. The prior owner had put at least a little curb rash on all of the wheels so now it's up to me to keep the new ones pristine.

Replacing rotors while replacing break pads is a good idea. I bought mine with 37k miles and dealership replaced break pads and resurfaced the rotors. Car would vibrate at high speeds and it would shake like crazy when breaking. I replaced the rotors and break pads again and car drives smooth as butter now. I agree that there must have been a lot of city driving involved if they needed to be replaced at such low millage.

Purchased a 2015 HTRAC AWD with 31,800 miles in May 2018 and needed brand new rear brakes and rotors. The car would vibrate when breaking at any speed over 40mph, after replacing the rear pads and rotors I will need to replace the fronts this spring (just under 35k miles presently). Wish I had just done them both at the same time. That being said, I had a 2013 3.8 RWD purchased with 36,000 miles which I drove until the warranty was about to expire (59,854 miles for the record) and I never needed pads or rotors. My 2015 HTRAC AWD was certified pre owned with the platinum warranty. You just never know. Get a pre purchase inspection plus extend the warranty and everything should be ok.
