Well when I went out for lunch today I had this show up:
IMG_20180808_1239224.webp

And it got me thinking about the whole concierge service. At first this sounded great as I would never had to drive to the dealership and deal with a horrible service adviser and always have a loaner. But now that it is almost time to book, I am thinking about what kind of a joy riding douche bag might get sent to pick up my car lol. I know in the grand scheme of things the car is nothing special, but I am always anal about my stuff and think the worst of others. :)

Curious what other peoples thoughts are on this and what you guys are planning?

My car is being parked tomorrow for 2.5 weeks as I go on a much needed vacation so I won't need this service until about mid September so I have some time to decide what to do. I think I will only have this hesitation for my first service as the car still feels new. Next service will be middle of winter and I won't care.

Where does it go for service? In the US we have local dealers. I have so far chosen to go to the dealer and wait. I save them 4 hours driving time so they give my synthetic oil. Of course, I'm retired and have time to do it.
A lot of dealers here of any brand uses part time retired guys for drivers and most are careful drivers. YMMV

I feel the same. I don't like to give my car keys to someone I don't know.
So, as long as I can do it, I will do the service myself. I am retired also and have the time, and enjoy doing it.
I just went through a "Map Update" that was a disaster. Took over 4 months of taking the car in, getting a loaner, going back to get the car and it would have more problems than when I took it in. When it was all over, they had installed 2 new head units, multiple updates and I drove away with the car exactly like it was when it all started including the same map, no update. So now I don't even trust them to do a service correctly on the first try.
By the way, I called Genesis customer care and explained what had happened. The agent I talked to had me hold on for about 1 or 2 minunits and came back and said a map update would be at my house in 2 days. I could take the car to another dealer or install it myself if I felt I could do it. Within 1 hour of the update arriving, I had the update finished and all has been great since.

I've always bought Mobil 1 and filter at Walmart and taken the car to my regular mechanic who changes it for $20. I'll continue with this car.

I know the person that does our valet service. He will not be joyriding at all -- I give him a demo every now and then to make sure he feeds the beast within. :ROFLMAO: But seriously, you don't need to worry about it. If you ever feel uneasy you can have myself or Jenn pick up your vehicle. :)

@Edmguy I share the same sentiment, though I also plan on putting a dash cam in mine that starts automatically when the car is moving just for peace of mind in that regard.

I think the valet service is as good or as bad as the dealer service is. A good dealer will make sure your car is properly cared for, a bad dealer probably won’t. I have had no problems with the two times I have used the valet here in SoCal.

The Hyundai "Connected" app has features that you can turn on that monitors stuff like that. Meaning it has a "Valet" setting, "Speed Alert" etc that monitor distances and speeds driven. All in the "Alerts" setting.

One potential issue with valet services is the amount of personal stuff you tend to keep in your car. In my case, it's pretty minimal but my wife will often leave papers that contain personal information or cash that was change from a rushed store purchase. She'll also leave valuable clothing that she intends to get to the dry cleaner, packages that she plans on bringing to FedEx, larger nonperishable purchases that she's left in the back seat, and other stuff, sometimes for extended periods of time. I think she'd be hesitant to have anyone other than one of us drive if she had stuff like that in the car. As I'll be the primary driver of anything we might buy in the coming months, it won't be a huge issue for us. But it might be for others in some cases. Of course, that stuff should also come out if the car is dropped off but it might be more tempting for a driver to take a peak while sitting in the car for an extended time (think long traffic lights) than a mechanic who likely would only be in the cabin for the minute or so it takes to drive the car into the service bay.

Not a major concern in most cases but something to think about.

Sorry but I don’t get it. You might keep sensitive stuff in the car and are not worried about it all the time the car is in the service department (not just a minute by any means) while it waits for a service bay, waits for a tech, waits to be washed, waits for someone to drive it out. I would be uncomfortable leaving sensitive material in the car under any circumstances. Take it out and put your mind at ease no matter where you leave it.

If you are having your regular mechanic do the job, first off , do yourself a favor. Buy an OEM filter and make sure your regular mechanic documents what oil and OEM filter was used. You will keep out of problems.

Example. If you use a Fram, Purolator, etc, and that filter blows, or breaks, or leaks from a bad weld, who is going to pay for the engine damage? Car manufacturer will correctly say it's not their fault that the aftermarket filter went bad. The filter manufacturer will decline responsibility and you will have to sue them and even then, you will probably lose.

(Sad story. My nephew had a Fram blow on his Ford. Contacted Fram who told him to send them the filter for inspection. Like an idiot, he did. Fram not only declined his claim, they did not return the blown filter). As long as car under warranty, use an OEM Filter and document it.

My dealership has a great customer manager. He’s the only one that touches my car. No worries on my end how he drives. He has also personally details my car once per month.

^ the service manager (or Genesis Experience Manager?) personally details your G80 once a month? that's unusual to say the least, and may not be the best idea unless he/she has a background in auto detailing.

He is a detail specialist. And he gives me a loaner for the few hours he has it. Pretty cool arrangement.

I actually had them take my car to install the... mudguards, I think, as well as put in the little trunk mat thing. My coworker actually told me he saw the guy driving away pretty quickly... I don't mind too much buuuuut I think I'm just going to drive it in myself when I'm due for service (I'm around 9.5K KM).

Also, they didn't do a great job of washing the car, may have left some swirls too. So I'm going to have them not clean it and I'll polish/detail it myself after this coming oil change or take it in to be detailed.

When I had a BMW with included service, I always had them do any stuff that was needed, including oil changes. It was probably less convenient than going elsewhere but it avoided any gripes from them that I hadn't met the conditions of my warranty. They were very accommodating during the free service and warranty period. Once the car was off warranty, things changed pretty dramatically. They started to find lots of things they thought needed to be addressed (some were ridiculously trivial and yet expensive) and they were clearly trying very hard to generate revenues, with less concern about my car or pocketbook's welfare. BMW has that reputation and it proved true. I just stopped going to them. When I got another BMW a few years later, I had them do essentially nothing, opting for a trusted local independent shop for everything, starting with the first oil change. It ended up being a far more positive service experience overall.

If Genesis provides a quality service experience, and I suspect they will, I would stay with them for service, certainly through the free-service period and likely beyond. That, of course, assumes I end up with a Genesis.

Yes, your wife seems a risky proposition.

We have ~5 Hyundai dealers in the city, but only one that does service for the new Genesis Canada model. That one is ~30km from my work or ~10km from my house. You are correct about the retired guys, I didn't think about that but I have noticed that in the past with shuttle drivers. I still work and have young kids so I don't have time to sit at a dealer, and they will use synthetic oil no matter what.

I've always bought Mobil 1 and filter at Walmart and taken the car to my regular mechanic who changes it for $20. I'll continue with this car.
If Genesis is going to give me a free oil change with synthetic oil why would I take the car elsewhere?

Not in Canada... the variances in the app are really irritating when it comes to people on this site giving advice lol

Good to hear. I know like others on here have mentioned, it really comes down to the dealer and I do think that we are lucky here in Edmonton with you and Jenn anyway. My hesitation isn't with you guys as much as just the idea of letting someone else pick up my car from work to take for service as I am not used to that. My previous BMW's always had free service but the valet thing will be new. I know Jenn has already told me to just call her when it is time for the service. (y)

^ yup, reason #13 why you never let the dealer wash the car as part of a service. they either use an automatic wash machine, or have the lowest paid grunt use their special steel wool wash brush dipped in mine-tailings quality wash water complete with grit. as nice as a free wash sounds, it's just not worth the headache of then having to restore the paint afterwards. washing by hand only takes ~30mins and is kinda fun/therapeutic after working behind a desk all day.

after learning this hard lesson many years ago, i ensure the service writer writes 'NO WASH' on the service order, the key tag, and puts a note on the dash.

as for the free vacuum and interior refresh, i'm in for that if provided. carpet is much more resilient than the paint finish from what i've found.
