  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi everyone,

Winter is almost here in Chicago. What winter tires would you recommend to wear? I have 2015 3.8 rear. I kept my all-season tires last year and I felt how the car was uncomfortable with a snow. So the winter tires are a must!

I put Nokian WRG3 on my last two cars. The nice thing is, they have a snow rating but are suitable for year round use. Designed for use in North America all over all year.

CR had tire ratings in their November issue. For winter/snow tires they recommended five of them.

1. Cooper Discoverer True North
2. Hankook Winter I*cept iZ2
3. Continental WinterContact SI
4. Michelin X-Ice XI3
5. Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3

Thank you all for useful advice!

I've had personal experience with the Toyo Garit KX, Hankook I*Pike, Federal Himalaya and Michelin X-Ice3 in all my previous cars. I can honestly say, Michelins are worth every penny. I have the Michelins on my 2nd Gen.

Having said that, if you are on a budget, Federal Himalaya offers the best bang-for-buck value. They were as good as Hankook I*Pike at about 15-20% less cost.

I put X-Ice on my G35. It's rear as well. They worked very well. Only issue I had was deep slush.

I agree, Michelin X-Ice Xi3’s are going to be my choice. I think.

Not sure about the 3.8 but on my 5.0, I just keep my DWS 06 on all year. Not a lot of selection in the correct sizes. There's really only the Pirelli Sottozero. I tried on an 18" steelie and it wouldn't clear the caliper. A square setup would be cheaper but I'm not sure how the car would handle.

I had no problems with the DWS 06 in 6" of snow going up and down some steep hills. They're just not good on ice but then nothing short of studded tires are really good on ice..

My first choice because of cost was the Continental WinterContact SI. But because of stock issues, I was upgraded to the Michelin X-Ice 3.
Looking forward to trying it out next week!

I had a set of DWS 06 on my Q5 and I can say without hesitation they were the best all season tire I have ever used.
I'll second the Continental DWS as a great all around tire that happens to do pretty damn good in snow. I live in Southern NJ and had them for several years on my last car which was a V8 Pontiac G8. Once they needed replaced I replaced with General Gmax AS03 which, if I recall correctly, were rated to be the second best all season tires in snow at the time. And they were super cheap when I bought them, about half the cost of the DWS. They were not quite as good as the DWS and I only had them one winter before I traded the car in for the current Genesis.

If I needed new tires on my 5.0 Genesis today, I'd be buying the DWS again. Driving a rear wheel drive V8 on snow is always a bit nerve racking but it's possible and can be kinda sorta fun in a scary kind of way. & Luckily we don't usually get too much snow here and my commute to work is only about 10 miles.

I should have added the detail that I lived in Massachusetts last winter, and we have 5 snows of 24+ inches and I never had an issue, or even a doubt, about whether the Q5 would be able to get me around.

My Genesis came with Michelin Primacy tires (brand new) which are just meh so far for me.

If I were to get new tires I would go with either the DWS 06 or possibly the Michelin Sport A/S 3+, I haven't decided.

I’ve had great luck with Bridgestone Blizzak tires...actually had my 2015 genesis for 2 months just put them on today we got close to a foot of snow I could barley get the car to lose grip.
