  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Like the title states, my rearview camera went out a bit over a month ago. It's been with Liberty Hyundai here in Rapid for the past two weeks. Two weeks before that, they had it and and changed the camera itself. Since they've had it this time around, they have replaced the head unit twice, yes you heard correctly, twice, and still no image on the screen; only the blue screen with marker lines.

$2400 for a head unit x 2 is $4800 plus labor. And guess what?! I'm not paying a penny. I was originally going to have to pay the labor charge I was quoted at which was $135 but Hyundai took care of the head unit price and the dealership is the one paying the tech since my issue is unresolved. I put in a customer satisfaction ticket with Hyundai and they approved the issue. So, now I have a refurbished head unit which comes with a 12mo/12k mile warranty and will likely not have to pay for the electrical issues going on with what they state "is probably the issue" (covered under 5yr/60k).

I'll be getting the car back today until their one and only certified tech comes back from emergency leave (collapsed lung, condolences). There isn't another Hyundai dealership for 240 miles.... pity. I'm happy Hyundai is taking care of the issue. The dealership not so much. They need to have more than one qualified tech to work on these cars. I'll thank Hyundai but I'll be happy to move out of the area where there are many dealerships to choose from.

Well that is certainly a bad situation. When finally fixed it will probably something like a bad connector that has to be cleaned. I would think though, that a Hyundai tech would be qualified to troubleshoot a camera since they have them on other cars too. But dealer may not be able to bill his time.

I'm thinking it is a bad connection at some point. Probably a $50 fix. I'll take the head unit and warranty as well as the new camera. I'll be looking into seeing if Hyundai will extend my 5yr/60k a few months. It's been in the shop over two months total in the 10 months I've had it. I'm not betting on it but I expect them to accomodate the lack of quality some of the features the Genesis has.

Update on the rear camera issue: Not fixed.

After having the third head unit installed, third rear camera installed, headliner removed to check all connections, the issue of the blue screen is still there. After reading through the warranty handbook, I have to consult BBB Auto Line before any civil case is actuated.

Started roughly on Oct 2, 2018. 50 days and no fix. I'll be keeping the loaner car until I either 1) Get it fixed 2) Get a buyout from Hyundai under "Magnuson - Moss" or 3) Get a replacement from Hyundai. As long as they have my car, I'll have the loaner.

What a f****** nightmare.

Good luck, that is a bad situation.

Sounds to me like the techs are changing parts without actually diagnosing the issue. Seems strange and a waste of time and money.

This tech is from Montana, specifically soured for my car, but is a Mazda certified tech. The only certified Hyundai tech they had in Rapid retired because of medical reasons. Geographically, odds are against me. I’ll be moving back to Ohio in February so Hyundai dealerships are abundant.

There are just not many parts in the system but it could be some quirk hiding.

I think this is the case. My friend just purchased a 2015 Genesis with 140,000 miles for dirt cheap. The back up camera didn't work (he knew about it before purchasing the car). He thought he got a great deal until he found out it would cost around $5000 to fix it. The electronics on today's vehicles are so sophisticated and expensive. Once they go wrong, it will cost a fortune to repair. Blind spot monitoring system and auto reversing side mirrors stopped working on my friend's Toyota Camry and he was told it would cost almost $3000 to get them replaced.

Another update:

Dealership is ordering the 3rd replacement head unit and another piece that goes hand-in-hand with the camera itself, at no cost to me of course.

In the mean time, I filed a suit with the Better Business Bureau and they have accepted my case. This is not for my State's Lemon Law, it falls under manufacturer defect under warranty provisions within the 5yr/60k mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty. I gave them three options to choose from:

- Buyback the vehicle and pay my original purchase price/pay off my loan.
- Pay purchase price/Pay off loan, I keep the car but have the title branded by manufacturer.
- Replace with a similar vehicle (color, miles, certified warranty, options, etc.)

One provision I noticed, but wouldn't happen in a million years, is that a comparable model must be the replacement. If unavailable, they would have to provide me with a current model year (2019 G80). The catch is I would have to pay the difference in my car's original MSRP and the new car's MSRP. I'd figure there is about a $3k-$5k difference between mine ($48k) and the new comparable G80 ($53k). Wishful thinking...

More to come...

Update:

Hyundai sent two engineers to Rapid to work on my car. I don't know if they are from HMA or South Korea. Still pretty cool they are taking it to this extent. I may go down there and talk to them as I won't be able to get in-depth information from the individuals that orignally work there.

Work being completed is removing the headliner and replacing all electrical wires from the camera to the head unit. Service advisor stated it could be a ground issue? If this doesn't fix it, shame. The Outlander is doing alright I suppose.

Jesus, this does not give me a warm and gushy feeling about this car and all the quirks.

things happen. doesn't mean it will affect every car made.

bad weld, bad crimp, loose wire, mashed wire, all things that can be overlooked during a build and result in what the OP is experiencing.

if it were a model wide problem you would hear a lot more people complaining. I would be willing to bet that somewhere in that harness something got pinched or mashed and it is a 1 off situation.

Oh, I get that but after dropping off my car 5 times for random stupid stuff its enough to lose some confidence.

yeah I can see that. .

ask me about my 2005 Chrysler 300C SRT some day, around $20,000 in warranty repairs in 6 years. :wallbash:

Sounds like the fiasco Doug DeMuro had with his used Land Rover. $3900 extended warranty from Car Max....over $30k in repairs!

Damn, alright you got me beat on that. What was some of the things that went wrong?

Pick a brand and pick a model and you will find similar stories. They are at least making great effort to fix it.

Lemon laws were enacted before Genesis existed for reasons such as this.

Toyota did the same thing when I had engine problems with a Toyota 4 Runner. Nothing to be concerned about. I'm glad to see they responded as they have for a small problem.

It goes with the brand and always has.
