Hi,

So I'm about to purchase a 2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 Ultimate (with HTRAC, from the Canadian market) and I had a few questions.

1. Is there anything I should be on the lookout for as far as issues with the 2015s? I saw that there's sunroof not closing issues.

2. Does anyone here do their own oil changes, new brakes, and tire changes? Is it a pain on this car (its my first personally owned car)?

3. Is $34,000 (US$25,000) with 29,000km (18,019 miles) a good deal?

4. I heard that there's 3 keys for this car, 2 normal keys and 1 "card", is that true?

5. Has anyone had to pay any huge maintenance costs on their car yet? (Kinda scared because this is a luxury car, but then i heard its cheap to maintain because its Hyundai)

6. Any advice in general before buying?

Thanks so much for the info and happy holidays!

It looks like cost to own/run is important to you. If so, you should consider the 3.8 - 95% of the time the 5.0 isnt needed. It's better on gas, easier to work on (more room) and has cheaper tires. (18" vs 19"+width).

Oil changes are annoying (not difficult) if you have to do it from underneath - 2 huge aero panels block off the underside. 25k seems like a good deal but condition of the car is important.

Yeah, I'm trying to find a V6, but their all only 5k cheaper and with more than double the miles lol.

The condition is literally perfect, has a small hairline crack in the front grill corner. A bit of wear on near the driver's side window controls, and a slight scuff on a rim. Need to get an independent inspection though. Also a clean Carfax with regular maintenance.

I would look closer at the hairline crack. Couldve been a bigger accident where they reused the part or got a used part. Just poke around and look for disassembly /reassembly of things. Like, screws and bolts that should be new/never turned but appear to have scuffs.

As for wear on the driver's side, that's strange. I don't think that's a known issue even for higher mileage cars...unless it's the tan interior

Ahh good call. Thanks.

Yeah its tan, and i think the previous owner wore arm jewelry or something and it kept scratching it lol.

5.0 is a fantastic powertrain, so if you can live w the gas mileage it will be a good car. Wish we had the Htrac option in the US back in 2015. Does the Canadian version include the CDC suspension? It is great, my favorite upgrade for the 5.0 Ultimate. Smooth luxury ride in normal driving, tightens up into a Beast for Sport mode.

I don't mind paying more for gas that much since more gas = more fun :P. I think it does, its the ultimate so it has everything the US one has (execept only a 5yr warranty, US i heard has 10yr).

Have you had any sunroof issues?

I did have the sunroof binding issue last summer, preventing closure. Dealer lubed it up, problem solved. I have had lots of issues over almost 4 years, so would not recommend to buy one without some kind of warranty. Nothing catastrophic, but as many times as this thing has been in the shop I am surprised it scores as high as it does on reliability/quality.

Certainly not a Lexus, which of course can also have issues, like all cars....

Yeah the warranty is up June 2019 on this one, there doesn't seem to be an Hyundai extended warranty for it, just 3rd party ones which seem to have massive exclusion lists. What kind of problems were you encountering? (i'm wondering if I could fix em myself or live with them lol)

Well take it with a grain of salt, here is the list for my 5.0 over the last 4 years. It is a great car and while everything was covered under warranty, I was not expecting to have so many issues. That said, I have had issues with my wife's Lexus but those were many years after warranty was up. Luck of the draw, perhaps.

1. Dead battery. replaced
2. Bad headlight switch, stalk replaced.
3. Sunroof seal alignment, fixed
4. Sunroof binding, stuck in open, fixed
5. Driver door seal deformed, replaced
6. Driver's side master window switch bad, replaced
7. All manner of dash lights, seeming huge electrical problem. Fixed, seemed to be some loose connector
8. Brake booster, slow leak, being replaced
9. Coating on interior door flaked off, TBD

I think that is it!

When I get the $9.95 or $14.95 coupons, my local dealer changes it. Other than that I change - not a big deal actually (helps I have a lift at home). You may wish to order some of the little push-pin connections as spares. When I bought my 5.0 used early in the year (same as you with a slightly higher price), the previous dealer in NJ was laze and only left the bolts remaining. I ordered a bag and now am good to go. From China they're like $8 per hundred.

My only issue was the door for the cigarette lighter/USB console section - would not properly close. They replaced the whole console. Continental tires are an issue personally experienced by me (they were not original, but replaced by Hyundai under a recall when the car was newer).

As often times is the case these days with cars, my alignment was not to my liking - we slotted some of the control arm holes up front tp allow for better alignment (Hyundai made this thing more or less not adjustable except for toe up front - cheap idiots!). I posted a thread on this method.

( love mine. Sounds like the greekgeek had some issues. I'm under warranty and not worried; that's why I buy with a good bit of warranty left.

Great car on the road - when you need to pass someone quickly on the highway, you'll really appreciate the 5.0.

My 2015 5.0 has mostly cosmetic issues like a peeling headrest leather and controls. Previous owner may have had long nails and wore hair pins. I do have the cream leather so any imperfection is very noticeable. I have repaired most of the issues fairly easy.

The only non-cosmetic issue I have is the reverse camera that is stuck in normal view mode for whatever reason, but it is my preferred mode anyway so I am leaving it alone until the camera stop working completely.

So far the 2015 5.0 is a solid car for the price, not Lexus quality but better than some used BMW models I checked out. Many used BMW models have peeling controls and random issues like seat position errors.

I've been quite happy with mine. It's my third and best Genesis sedan.

I started doing my own oil changes with this car using synthetic and OEM filters purchased 10 at a time. It's not a big deal since I only drop the front under shield to change the filter. To drain the oil, I use a oil extractor (a manual one that you pump using the handle, thereby creating a vacuum) directly via the dipstick tube. Quick and clean (and I know it's done right).

The only issue I had was recent @ 55000 Km and it was relatively major, but it appears rather rare. The drivetrain began jerking only when accelerating. Hyundai first thought it was the tranny, but after more testing found that the AWD transfer case along with the AWD computer were causing the issue. Both were replaced under warranty and the car drives better than ever now. The transfer case is designed and manufactured by Magna international, produced in their plant in Austria then shipped for assembly in South Korea. Magna also makes these type of products for BMW's X-Drive so they are a reputable company. I don't hear of any other owners having similar issues.

The sunroof has just started to rattle a bit while closed when the temps drop to near freezing. Not always, but sometimes. It has always operated properly. The natural light and airy feeling the roof provides makes up for a bit of rattle in my opinion.

I'd say $34000 is a relatively good deal for such low mileage.

Yes, the Canadian model came with 2 fobs and 1 card key. The card key is great. Just put in in the wallet and forget about carrying a fob.

I know that the 5.0 is a bit of overkill, but I don't go through that much gas per year for it to be a game changer. It combined with the AWD is a fantastic combination making this car very sure footed - especially when the weather gets cold and wet! It is also a kick to play with some pretty high end fancy pant sedans out on interstates that think they are kings of their domain. Having this power train is "sauce for the goose"!

Yes, the Canadian 5.0 Htrac has the CDC suspension. There was only one Genesis 5.0 model sold in Canada and it was like getting an "everything bagel".

Thanks everyone for the info! I'm starting to think that since the warranty is ending in 6 months that getting this car is would probably be a bad idea :( its too bad since it seemed so great.

I'm going to see if the Hyundai dealership has anyway of selling me extended warranty from Hyundai before the warranty period ends, that will cover electronics, and the dreaded sunroof lol

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
there are some good aftermarket extended warranties as well. With all the high end electronics on these cars, I for one have bought the extended warranty (don't normally do that for other cars, but the cost vs. coverage made it worth my while). I sold my 2011 to a gent with another 6 mos. warranty remaining and 10K miles, I can only think that was one of the selling points. This one I bought was through the credit union from whom I borrowed - from my research they were well reputed and the coverage will take me beyond 120K US miles.

Wise move to only buy this car used with an extended warranty. The same can be said of any used luxury car. Lexus would be the only luxury brand that I would risk buying used without an extended warranty.

So did some research and found out that some dealerships are selling this HEP plan which seems like exactly what I want since its for used cars and its Hyundai's own plan.

Now I just gotta find out how much lol and if they'll sell me just the warranty even though I'm not buying a car from them.

At this point my backup plan is a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Turbo Ultimate for (cad)$24,000 with 22,000km. Lol
