  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello,

Yesterday something stranged happened to a car second time in last 3 month. After I parked a car and it was powered off I felt like something hit a car from behind, the whole car jerked forward. After that I was unable to move either forward or backward, putting into drive or rear would not make car move, engine would rev up but car would appear trying to overcome very strong parking break (that is move only a tiny bit). Just like last time it happened some sort of manipulations (constantly shitfting back between parking and drive) finally get me out of this situation after about 5-10 minutes.
I can not really bring car to dealership since I imagine they would want car in broken state to troubleshoot since otherwise car drives fine. What could be potential reason for this or any other advice?

And then it just got better? Wow, that's a weird one. Good luck and be safe!

Years ago I would have said most likely a linkage problem. With all the computer controls in them now I'm hesitant to say. Sounds like it went hard into Park and then stayed in Neutral regardless of the shift handle position.

still likely a linkage issue. even with the electronic shifter in the car, there is still a mechanical link under the car, instead of a cable or rod going from the shifter to the gear selector, it is a electronic module that turns the linkage on the transfer case.

this is the 2015-2016 Genesis Transmission: as you can see by the red circled item, there is a mechanical link:

17855

the highlighted parts here are the mechanical linkages to the transmission:

17856

Which are controlled by an electronic module that rotates the linkage.

most likely it is this module that is failing, the worm gear is likely stripped and not always fully engaging or disengaging the transmission and moving the selector in and out of park eventually helps it along, but at some point it will fail completely.

OP, any decent dealer should be able to diagnose this whether or not the issue is present, the module can be removed and examined and it would likely show very clearly that it is failing, cracked, or stripped.

I spent over 20 years as an ASE tech for GM and Chrysler back when we were troubleshooters and problem solvers, not just parts changers.

Is entire engine needs to be disassembled before getting access to that part or it's easily diagnosed without much mechanical dissasembly?

its a rear wheel drive car, so there should be no reason to disassemble any part of the engine to get to the transmission, there might be a heat shield or something in the way, but the linkage should be easily accessible from under the vehicle.

I'm looking for a picture of the underside or a cutaway image to verify, hang on a bit

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I believe this is a 2018, 2015-2018 are the same, it appears that the only thing that might be in the way is the exhaust/front catalytic converter

red arrow is pointing to the linkage, if you are out of warranty I would say expect 2-3 hours of labor charges.

It sure would be easy to work on these things if the body just lifted off like that. Mr. Incredible, you are a mensch.

no doubt. FWIW I can lift the body off my 1939 Ford Tudor Hot Rod like that, with a bit of preparation.. lol

I just had that module changed on my 2016 Genesis Sedan 3.8 AWD. I started getting error code P0705, basically signifying a part failure. That part tells the computer what gear you're shifted to. When it failed for me, I got the engine light and traction control light come up on my dash. The Hyundai part number is 427004E100. The part cost be $108CDN from a Hyundai dealer and Rockauto has it too for a lot less but they're back ordered. The part is very easily accessible. I took a picture of it under my car when it was on the hoist. Hope it helps.

thanks for posting this, it confirms my findings above..

kudos.

Weird, once in a while my car does something similar -- I'll park and then when I shut the engine off the car suddenly jerks forward (or maybe it's backwards?).

Wonder if it's going to develop the same problem as yours...
