  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

After extensive reading and searching on the forum, I can’t seem to narrow down a couple of questions. Owned my 2010 Gen sedan 3.8 for about two months, currently in the middle of a road trip in the snow storm of the century in Az. The Gen does very well in the snow with Mich Xice. I’m quite impressed.
  1. This has got to be the worst sounding car on a cold day (-10F) start of all my 20 or so cars I’ve owned. Warmed up, purrs like a kitten. Normal?
  2. Under light load, it is noisy. Like marbles inside the engine. Normal?
  3. The auto transmission shifts like a manual.
Vrrrrroooommmmmm.pause, next gear.vrooooooooom, pause, next gear. Etc. again, normal?(wife looked over to see if I was doing it on purpose 😝)
Thanks everyone.
BTW, 40,000 miles on car

Let it warm up always and service the transmission.

Marbles or sewing machine in need of lube?

Marbles would be bad, dry sewing machine sound however is the HPFP's mounted on the valve covers and tends to be slightly noisy on cold starts.

1. You could try changing the oil to a higher-quality synthetic or one step lighter weight for winter to avoid valvetrain noise on subzero starts. Also make sure there is an OEM oil filter in the car (not aftermarket).

2. Could be knock, but shouldn't be. Maybe a foulded injector or bad gas. Try top-tier gas or a step or two higher octane for a few tanks. Toss a big bottle of Techron in the tank while you're at it. Could also be a crushed non-OEM spec oil filter blocking flow at low speed.

3. The genesis transmission is not a Porsche PDK or Chevrolet 10-speed: Slow "luxobarge" shifting is normal. Rough shifting is not. +1 to a transmission fluid and filter change. Even at 40k miles, the car is 10 years old and transmission fluid doesn't last forever.

And as others have said, let it warm up before hooning on it on top of the above and you should do fine.

Thank you. SLIGHTLY didn’t even begin to describe😳

Thank you.

First thing I did when I got it was switch to a synthetic winter blend.
Yes, I thought of the gas thing about an hour later. Gonna try a mid grade today.
The transmission reminds me of manual shifting. Very unique. I plan for a full fluid chand in the fall. Thanks again

Why did you buy this car and are being cheap about it. Make time to service the transmission! you got a luxury car and it needs luxury attention if you want it to last any amount of time. And really? Mid grade gas??? Everyone on the forum said put in premium. DO IT. fill it with 91, hit the highway, and floor it (AFTER YOU SERVICE THE TRANNY) blow all that crud through the exhaust. It’s the closest you’re going to get to a fuel systems cleaning for the price.

I would sell the car and buy something more reliable If I were you. I think the genesis is a great mixture of ridiculous complicated luxury car systems that you’ll never fix without a master mechanic or dealer, and reliable hyundai parts that are somewhat easy to find and available online.

You’re dealing with easy problems with huge consequences long term. It’s a lot easier to cough up some money for a software problem that can only be fixed by a dealer, than it is for a new transmission or new car because you didn’t spend $100-$200 on a service. If you did it yourself it would be ever cheaper...

I'm sure winter fuel in Alberta is very volatile... thinking about it some more I'd wager you're getting knock. Don't mess with mid-grade, go straight to premium (93 if you can get it) for a couple tanks and do the techron treatment.

As Jabald said, don't be cheap with this car if you care about it.

At what point did I imply I was being CHEAP?
Yes, I could go to Hynudai and throw a bunch of money at it and HOPE it fixes any issues OR I can take a couple of weeks and do some thorough, thoughtful research before I start throwing money at a problem that isn’t!
If I was cheap I wouldn’t have done an oil change after 500 miles so I could switch to winter blend full synthetic 🙄
The car was thoroughly serviced by Hyundai prior to purchase.

Had zero issues with Alberta fuel. Didn’t show up until Arizona.

I'm sure he can answer for himself but perhaps it was when you said:

It seems like you should have the transmission serviced now give the shifting you are experiencing.

You implied being cheap when you said you were going to use mid grade fuel, you sound even cheaper now. Your machine can’t speak so I have to speak for it! Weeks upon weeks of “thorough research” is a poor excuse! You already told us it shifts like a manual. The cats out of the bag. My 2011 4.6 has 130k miles and shifts like butter. Either fix the problem or deal with the shame of the forum Wizards. Im not very reputable here on this forum, but others are, and they’ll tell you the same. Last thing Ill ask is, do you really want to have your transmission explode on the freeway when you travel back to Alberta?

Try doing a search of Genesis Sedan fuel type and read the answers. There is no obvious consensus. The common factor is those looking for maximum go fast. I grew out of that a long time ago.
I’m trying to describe the “pause” between shifts. Like you said, a complex machine. It is “ different” that’s all.
No shame from forum Wizards yet except for one wannabe.
If I wanted the transmission to explode on the way back to Canada, I would’ve bought a CVT.

A tranny is a tranny is a tranny. There is nothing good about what you're exactly trying to describe. You can get quotes on repairs from qualified Hyundai technicians. They might know exactly what you're talking about. I'm really just trying to help. If you don't service it, it will break eventually. If you do service it, two things can happen: #1. The Problem wont change, You now know it needs a rebuild, and you can just baby the transmission for thousands of miles until it gets unbearable #2. The Problem goes away and your wife doesn't think you're screwing with her lol. Pride won't make your transmission run longer ;)

On the 2010 3.8 V6 engine the valve lash should be checked and adjusted per the manual. The engine has solid lifters which do take some maintenance and a car 10 years old will need the service.

Two full cans of sea-foam in the gas tank right before a fill-up will do wonders for cleaning out the fuel system. And as far as the strange shifting it may be an adaptive shifting issue. From what you are describing it sounds like it learned its shift pattern from a little old lady (no offense to any "little old lady's" on here), it may need the transmission adaptive's reset (unfortunately you need an advanced scanner to do that, may be a Hyundai only thing) after a flush and filter/fluid change. Also, when you say winter oil weight, what weight are you referring to?
