  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anyone happen to know of the Limited Slip on the 4.6 Genesis will fit in the rear end of the 3.8 Genesis? If someone on here has access to parts catalogues with part numbers they may be able to tell if the rear diff housing and axle shafts are the same between the 3.8 and 4.6.

If so, then I am going got look at replacing mine with a LSD since I live in snow country and it would be nice to have the extra traction available when needed.

Even if the parts fit it may not be a simple swap. Vehicle stability and traction controls may need to be integrated.

Why do you say that? If the axle shafts are the same and none of the sensors change then it should be a simple swap of the gears in the diff housing. TCS and ESC work off of sensors that detect whell spin, so it should be feassable if the housing and axle shafts are the same.

The 4.6 V8 rear axle gear ratio and the 6 speed autotrans ratio are completely different than the 3.8 V6. This will affect the engine RPM, throttle opening, ABS braking and other control logics.

Where can I find the specs for the rear axle ratios on the 3.8 and 4.6?

It is listed in one of the Genesis technical manuals. There was a link in one of the thread in this forum. You may want to do some searching or you can just call your dealer's service department for the info.

Thanks just found it. The 4.6 axle ratio is 3.13 & the 3.8 is 3.90, so it look like a simple swap is not in the cards. Bummer! :(

A good set of winter tires and maybe a couple of sand bags in the trunk may help ;)

Yes indeed. As well as liberal use of the pseudo-manual tranny. Specifically, leaving a stop sign or light in 2nd (in snow). Amazing what taking off some torque can do. Also use it for downshifting.

Thanks for tips, I'm not worried, I've had a few cars in the past without LSD and they dind't have NO ESC or TCS back then.

I will be putting on a set of snows though , and maybe a bag or 2 of sand .

anyone know if the gearing can be changed in the 4.6 to better acceleration, taller gears i think its called?

Theoretically if you can swap the ring, pinion and carrier from the 3.8 to the 4.6 you should pick up quite a bit of extra scoot. It would however be like driving around in 4th or 5th gear all the time when the trans is in 6th gear. Also not factored into this are the internal ratios of the transmission. Because everything is electronic, adjusting things like speedometer and other speed and rpm dependent sensors will probably be confused. Since there is little or no aftermarket computer support like there is for GM's LSX series of powertrains readjusting these sensors is virtually impossible.
