If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

K&N 69-5318TS Air Intake

The HP gains will be minimal with just an air intake alone. Actually, without having a tune to compliment the upgrade, you will cause your vehicle to LOSE HP rather than gain it. The reason is that you will now be taking in much higher volumes of air without the ECU outputting a higher fuel/air ratio which will cause the vehicle to run leaner and thus you will lose power as a result. The manual battery reset will not solve the issue as the stock ECU will not be able to adjust the ratios high enough without a tuner manually changing the settings.

I actually had this happen on my old G35, where I had added every possible bolt on but hadn't gotten it tuned yet. The car was extremely sluggish and the whole time I thought I was gaining power, but it was all in my head. A stock G35 makes about 240hp to the wheels, well when I put my full bolt on G up on the dyno before the tune, I was shocked to see that I was making only 216hp to the wheels. Well, the tune fixed that right up. My air/fuel ratio was 22:1 before the tune with all the mods, but after the tune they took it down to about 13-14:1 and I saw gains from 216hp all the way up to 283hp to the wheels once it was tuned.

Long story short: if you do mods that open up the air volume the car takes in, make sure you get it tuned or you will have a reverse affect on power.

Edit: the intake WILL make the car SOUND louder and faster though, due to the increased air flow.

You may be replying in general or to the OP, but in my case I would only throw an air filter kit on (and any other mods like downpipe) if I added a piggyback tune (like JB4 or RaceChip)... however, with that said, my question would be can those piggyback tunes take advantage of the increased airflow? Maybe that's a question for the piggyback manufacturer?

I'm speaking to both the OP and in general. You have to have an even air to fuel ratio for the car to meet optimum performance. If your normal air to fuel ratio is 14:1 and you add an air intake, it may jump up to 16:1 or maybe even 18:1 depending on the filter size and tubing. You will need to have a tuner get into the ECU and compensate extra fuel to account for the increased air or else you will end up losing power and just gaining noise. Also, if the intake is not properly shielded from heat, it can have a reverse affect as well because the engine needs air that is cooler than what the engine is producing to gain power. If the intake is sucking in air from under the hood, that's a hot air intake and will not increase power but rather decrease it due to heat soak.

On my Genesis, which is tuned by BTR, I have several mods done. My intake is fully custom since they don't make a solid unit for this car. I had a fab shop make me a 4" welded aluminum intake tube and I wrapped it with gold heat deflecting wrap, and I kept the stock airbox since it was beautifully designed to keep heat out and works better than anything on the aftermarket, and I replaced the stock filter with a K&N drop in and removed the restrictive air flap underneath that. My car is at its optimum performance right now with all the mods and the tune. I'd highly recommend wrapping the intake tubing in the gold reflective wrap as its cheap and can keep intake temps down about 20 degrees which can only help performance.

Good info @Rspected thanks for the insight! I really need to find a decent tuning shop around me that I can talk to. I don't even know where to start to find someone truly reputable.

2018 Genesis G80 Sport with the 3.3T AWD.

I *seriously* considered trading it for a Kia Stinger GT2 just last week because the Stinger seems to be getting all of the tuner love out there, but after closer inspection I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Certain things about the Kia's interior/exterior just seem "cheap" to me compared to my G80 Sport. I *may* consider a G70 in the future since it has the same engine and is ~1,000 pounds lighter than my G80 Sport while still feeling luxurious inside and out. My dealer actually got one in and I went down to see if I wanted to buy it, and really might have right then and there, but it was already sold. They won't get more for close to 6 months, so I'm sticking with my G80 for the foreseeable future.

The biggest thing I need is better brake pads (whole other thread on that topic by me) and it's difficult to find solid performance aftermarket pads/rotors for the G80 AWD. I found 6 piston Brembo big brake kit, but they are for RWD only. 😔

Reason that I asked was because they dont have any tuning besides BTR for the 09-14 sedan like I have but I'm not sure about your year vehicle. This forum should have more info on if a tune is available for your model year

Because it's the same 3.3L Twin Turbo that is in the Kia Stinger GT, as well as the newer G70, there are some piggyback tunes out there. JB4 is one, another is RaceChip GTS, and I believe even more... but those two are the one's I am eyeing ATM. Both promise 100+ Torque and 50-100+ WHP. The only thing people are needing to do to get there is new tighter gapped spark plugs and the highest octane you can get (93 or E85).

Those claims kinda hit my BS meter but might be worth a shot. I'd stay away from any "chips" tho as those are usually scams and dont produce anything but a placebo effect

There are a bunch of users on here that have these installed and are seeing some pretty significant gains. Some of the guys have Dragy GPS to time 0-60 and have taken off half a second and more.

The 3.3T is very conservatively tuned from the factory... gotta make sure they are not losing money on their 10 year 120K mile drivetrain warranty. So people are finding they can piggyback and fool the ECU into making more boost and hence more power.

It's also turbocharged so a simple upgrade to the turbo would yield large power gains paired with a tune but idk anything claiming that much HP without supporting mods strikes my BS meter

Anyone have any updates available regarding cold air intakes for the G80 3.3TT? Seems it's a long shot, but may end up doing what OP did and figure a work around for the K&N

What I am hearing from shops and vendors is there just isn’t enough interest in tuning from the Genesis community compared to the Stinger. Perhaps the G70 will change that some, but it could take a good while as they are only just starting to trickle into the US.

I thought about trading my G80 Sport for a Stinger GT2, but they just aren’t as luxurious as the Genesis line IMO, and that still matters to me.

Not sure what it would take, but maybe we can rally up support on here and take it to some vendors… but even then it might take longer than you want.

I am trying to find a Pro Tuning Shop near me that can do custom work.

Yeah it is looking that way. May take the dive and do as the OP did, going with the K&N and just figuring out an alternative for the mounting bolts. Will update if I do!

Alright guys, just installed the K&N referenced above made for the Stinger. For the most part everything makes sense and lines up with the exception of the heat shield. The location of the securing bolt is much lower in the heat shield design than the g80 wheel well. However with the provided rubber support it fits nice and snug under the braces. Additionally you will not believe the sound your turbo spoil will make. It doesn’t feel any different but it sounds like a turboed vehicle now. Under stop and go cruising car remains quiet.
Do you have a video of inside vs outside vs drive by with just the filter replacement? Thanks!

So did you just not use the heat shield or did you drill new holes? I tried to install these tonight before seeing this thread and couldn't figure out how to get them in so I just threw in the OEM one's again for now.

Do you happen to have any photos of the install? I'm ready to pull the trigger on this too but you are the only member I can find that has reported back on installation. I tried the BMS intake last week (customer support said it would fit) and sadly, it did not.

Nick, did you ever get this to work? I am planning on buying the same kit too for a 2018 G80 Sport
