I took a video for anyone wondering what the 3 things from our shop in the title look like on our cars. I LOVE it. I just ordered a matte black plastidip kit from DYC and I think the combo of Genesis center wheel cap and black wheels will look slick.
Please don't plastidip your stock wheels.... that look is for high schoolers who cant afford black rims...don't devalue your luxury sedan by doing that...

Looks good. Not sure about the wheels. Most of the time I don't like black but some cars look good with them. Of course I'm 2000 miles from you so it does not matter if I like them, only that you do.

Man, not to be rude, but your life must be sad when you beg others not to do something because of their financial situation, real helpful. Oh well, hope you are happy with the choices you made with your car.

The cool thing about plastidip is I can always finish the mattee with a gloss or metalized layer, or I can just peal the dip off and go back to the stock color. I want to see how matte looks first before I make any decisions. I don't want to buy new wheels, I am happy with the 17" and would rather save my money for coil overs in the long term.

My gf also wanted her wheels painted, so I thought this would be a good start for me to practice and see how it turns out before I do it on her car. She has a black 17 Escape that she wants to black out, but can't afford new wheels.

Makes sense. I'd rather peel the dip that spend 2 grand on wheels and not like the result. You can do one side black, leave the other side stock and make people wonder about you too.

Having worked with this stuff before Just fyi if you use a real Paint clear over it will lose all peelability..

Couple notes for you for plasti dipping

PREP IS KEY(take your time on this part)

Clean Every surface thouroughly Yes that includes the sidewall of the tire. Since you said you ordered a kit im sure they gave you something to do this with if not soap/water let dry( you can blow off hiding moisture with an air compressor if you have onee) and again with isopropyl alcohol to make sure there is no moisture or dirt left behind.

prep tires with any tire cleaner or tire black makes for easy removal of overspray

warm up the cans in a bucket of warm water to help the material atomize better when you spray it

make sure you spray from different angles, also on every coat make sure you make a pass around the outside of the rim on the tires sidewall will make it so you have a good base to peel up

Dont go for full coverage on the first 2 layers and with at least 5 or 6 coats (better protection and peelability) with the kit you should use 1 entire can per wheel

highly recommend getting their plasti dip care product too its great stuff for plasti dip
Dip Coat™ Protective Spray 32 oz

And dont mind what anyone says you do you. I use the high tier stuff called AutoFlex and you can definitely get your wheels done in a high gloss finish using it for a much cheaper price then brand new set of wheels. It's not as DIY but there are plenty of auto paint shops that could quote you for your wheels... Unless you live in CA like me haha then youre shit out of luck. Have fun with the project upload pics when you do!

also where di you pick up those lug nuts from?

I am literally going to print this out right now and use it as my prep list, you are the man!

TY on that link to the Dip Coat™ Protective Spray 32 oz, after I bought everything, I did more reading and saw this stuff.

Lug nuts are just from Autozone. I like the color blue and thought it would add a nice touch of color to the wheels. I will switch them out to my stock set of nuts so I can spray those too, but then I will have the choice to put the blue ones back on.

Also when putting on the tire cleaner be careful not to let it touch the edge of the rims it will prevent the plasti dip from bonding to the rim properly. Yeah man any questions you have about sprayable wrap I did my own car and have done plenty of research on the stuff the dos and don'ts and what not haha

If you're in a financial situation, then dont rush into getting rims. Save until you can afford them. Plastidip is the most cheap looking mod you can do for your car. Better off getting engine enamel from autozone and painting it with that and a good clear. Besides, after a few car washes the plastidip will flake in spots and start to look awful. These are luxury sedans. Plastidipping the rims of a luxury sedan is like putting a bumper sticker on a Ferrari. If everyone was dipping their genesis wheels, we would fall backwards and fit in better with the honda civics rather than the benzes and BMWs.

I'd have to say you're wrong on this bud... if applied correctly plastidip looks/hold up great especially with there newer pro series product.. it all just depends on proper application and the amount of prep time you take.

I'm a store manager of a popular full service car wash here in florida. I've seen plastidip first hand get messed up by my wash several times in my 7 years here. It's of course a subjective viewpoint of mine. But you would never catch me dead with plastidip on my Genesis sedan. Save that for the honda/350z crowd. Genesis deserves better than that, and if you think of your Genesis as a car that plastidip belongs on, then you dont value it enough. Why would you to that to a nice looking luxury sedan? Do you also put autozone hood scoops on your SLS AMG?

Edit: If you can afford a Genesis for $18-25k then how can you not afford to throw a $1500 set of rims on it? Hell they even got nice sets of rep wheels for $800 a set...

Yeah I'm gonna be honest... most people(just a generalization) who take their car to the car wash dont really give a shit about their car and are far too lazy to do it themselves. Anything but dedicated auto detailers for true paint correction will f$%k your shit up that's pretty common knowledge. So people who are too lazy to wash they're own car are too lazy to prep and properly spray plastidip to where its durable and obviously because they're using some cheaper carwash option they're too lazy to take care of and properly maintain the sub par plasti dip job in the first place.. AGAIN just generalizing. But I promise you I f**ked with the stuff since it was a company in fonzie's garage. The old shit was pretty shitty it fits the profile you think plastidip is.. it was a shit prototype but it pioneered the way to a better product. I mean the whole reason I was even able to spray wrap my car the color it is today is because of the experience I have had with dip you saying I've devalued mine as well? it's a great product that when used as it should can achieve amazing results not just on cars but pretty much anything. I've seen plenty of dipped Audi's and amgs saw a satin blue wagon and it was beautiful.. sometimes projects take steps, I still have to delete the rest of my chrome trim and upper window.. I still get comments from randoms.. personally I think it looks a little goofy and will be fixing it here shortly but regardless it's a step in my projects. This is a step for Jalvin in his process. Seriously.. quite freaking hating it's not a good look my man.

Jalvin,

If you follow the things I listed and take your time to do it right you'll be just fine and I bet it will look great. If you mess up or you dont like it you peel it and no harm no foul. The more you do it the better you'll get. And if you're like me you can start doing it with autoflex and raail. The best part about this whole thing is it's YOUR LUXURY SEDAN drive it off a cliff if you want(not reccomended) but you get what I mean people can hate it or love it or not give 2 shits. As long as you're happy or proud to be working on your own damn car that's all that matters.

2 things:

1. This is America, and I don't have to listen to you when it comes to what I do with my own property.

2. I don't pay any attention to people who judge others for their decisions, based on their financial situation. You shouldn't be going around telling people they need to stop doing cheaper mods because you think it lowers the brand. The best part of the car world is everyone can do whatever that makes them happy with their own car, and I love how the dip turned out. It was a fun learning experience, didn't put a dent in my wallet, and it's not permanent.

I still respect your opinion and I hope we can find places we can agree on and help each other out, but if all you want to do is judge me for my decisions, we don't need to talk. Have a nice day.

I don't think this will be the last time I dip. I learned a lot through the process and I cannot wait to do it again and get better at it. It is such a cool mod for cars that have decent wheels, but just not the color you want. I followed all your instructions and they turned out great. The hardest part was the edge of the rim, where it bends back down into the tire. Next time I will move the car more than once to get every single angle I can.

Thanks for the help!

It's raining all this week. On the first sunny day, I will give her a nice wash and wax, and use the dip wheel cleaner that came with the kit to get the car to shine, and I will take pics.

Hey man to each their own. Agree to disagree. This is my opinion and obviously you dont have to conform to it. But to the comment above yours, theres a difference between a matte paint or wrap, and plastidip. They are mutually exclusive and matte can look great when done right but the difference with dip is it has a texture to it instead of being flat and it makes it look like truck bed coating. Just not my thing and never met someone who liked it but do your thing buddy. Craigslist has great deals on used rims if you're on that deep of a budget.

I have kept an eye out on CG for wheels and still plan to buy an aftermarket set one day. I just wanted to try out plastidip to see how the process works and how it looks. I am happy with how they turned out, but I am not stupid, I know it looks worse than actual aftermarket wheels lol I totally get your side brother, but if I was you, I just wouldn't go on other peoples posts to comment in a negative way. Just let people be and do their own thing, no reason to tell someone they made a bad decision, unless they are permanently damaging the car, which plastidip does not.
