  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a 2014 ultimate with 19k miles for $24k. Anything to look out for? The original owner never sat in the backseat and so the broken hinges were never replaced under warranty. Have any of you had it done outside the warranty? I called my dealer and the labor alone is $300...I'm guessing it will be an impossible task to get them to replace for free even though the car shouldn't have left the dealership without the repair.

Also a little worried about the longevity of the air suspension. Seems to be in good shape at the moment but five years is still five years even with only 19k miles.

FWIW I got a 2011 Ultimate back in August and while the air suspension seems to have held up fine so far (~69,000 miles) I have noticed that it will randomly level itself higher in the front after I start it up and sometimes when I turn off the car, get out, and lock it, the compressor will kick on for maybe half or a full second.

All in all it has been a much better air suspension experience than the one I had with a 2004 S500 with over 135,000 miles on it.

Yesterday I buy the car and first thing after finishing the paperwork I get a "check BSD system" error that is not defeatable. Hoping it will clear itself I drive home. It's still there this morning. Nothing on the bumper. Also the car started super rough a couple of times yesterday with the starter cranking away. I have a five day return window.

If it were me I'd return it. The roughest startup I ever had was when it was in the single digit temperatures, took an extra second or two to turn over.

I bought this accident-free 40,000-mile car 9 months ago, relying on my research and the good reviews. However, it appears that the Hyundai Equus model has yet to master the finesse that is required in high-end vehicles. Now at 48000 miles, the leather covering of the dashboard has lifted from its base (see pics). I took it to Rick Case Hyundai service department (and to many other experts in the upholstering business) and was told that the leather covering of the dashboard has shrunk and may continue to shrink further (see attached pictures). The dealer claims that several similar issues had come up and if this car is over 5 years old, it is no longer under warranty and may be fixed at a cost of $4,500.00. The high cost is due to the front windshield and the dashboard that must be removed. I was also advised that the Equus and the now G90 models are warranted for 10 years or 100,000 miles for power train (engine, transmission, and differential) only. The electronics or any other component is warranted for 5 years or 60,000 miles. In addition to the above issue, when cruising (with cruise control activated) on the expressway at 75MPH, the car would suddenly shut off, slowing down considerably, and would self-power-up a few seconds later. At other times, the brakes would self apply when passing or being passed by vehicles on the adjacent lanes almost causing me to be rear-ended at high speed. I was advised that one of the taillights showed condensation inside of it, a fissure on the taillight assembly that allowed water to get in thereby shorting the entire electronics. Dealer cost for the repair, $1,800.00. I called Hyundai and was flatly told that it was my problem to have it fixed, not theirs as the car, just recently being over 5 years, was out of warranty. I ended up fixing the tail light at a cost of $1350.00. I still have the tail light assembly, it had about one-half gallon of water inside, however, the technician was baffled as to how the water was able to get inside of it as the unit appeared well-sealed, without any cracks and unbroken. Although the vehicle is a performer, it appears that Hyundai is lacking in the area of quality control that is required in high-end vehicles. The above-mentioned issues, if not properly addressed by the vehicle manufacturer, will eventually result in fatalities. Also, small and annoying defects in these vehicles are proven to be super expensive to repair. Hyundai/Kia is going to havve to do a lot of work to regain my loyalty. Hello BMW, CADILLAC and MERCEDES...

Yeah, we heard that the other two times you posted it. Perhaps you should trade it this week and get one of the others you mention as nothing else is going to make you happy. Best way to eliminate stress is to eliminate the root cause.

Interesting
They did the dash repair on mine at the dealer right before I bought it...years ago
They actually did that and the air suspension both under factory warranty
The Equus was 3 years old when I bought and I have owned it for 4 years now

I think he has a reason for concern here...and clearly this is not good for the Hyundai/Genesis brand if this is known to be a poorly made item as he states

He may have a concern but posting it 3 times on the same forum does what? Aside from some satisfaction of bitching, nothing useful that I can see. If anyone can show me the value I will withdraw my comment. .

Like all cars out of warranty, the car maker has no obligation. I've run into similar situations with other brands. Even with a 3/36000 warranty after 2 years and 38000 on a not moving part. One of the brands he mentioned told me to buy a new car. I did. A Hyundai and have been happy since.

Being an apparent fanatic of this model, I will give you a good deal on mine that is now for sale...

Would you have had an issue if he said the same positive thing about the car three times?...do you think that would be useful?

Everyone knows that the manufacturer has no obligation to fix its cars out of warranty

However..if someone is looking for this car the information on likely failures is valuable in my opinion

If this very expensive dash failure is something that the dealer said is common...then a I think any potential buyer would want to know...dont you think?
As I posted before..my Equus had this dash replacement repair done ( along with the air struts) under its original factory

Posted one time, yes, but now it is up to four times. Just my opinion, but that is more the need to bitch than to be helpful to others.

To answer your question, good or bad, four times is a wast of time for everyone here. Opinion remains the same.

Human nature. I've participated in many forums for many years. People don't brag about good stuff more than once in most cases, but people will continue to complain about something bad forever. Makes them feel better but fixes nothing.

I have to disagree with you on that..People will brag out the same good things multiple times in these automotive forums
That has definitely been the case in this forum even if it includes exaggeration
I dont really have an issue with good or bad posted multiple times...since I may not have caught something important the other times they posted it
If I have read it once I am free not to read it again and just move on to the next post

I am glad he posted it numerous times. I wrote that I was looking at a 2016 Equus and guess what, it had the same problem with the dash cover. Sometimes helping you fellow citizens who are interested in what you have no matter how many times you do it. By the way I passed on the car. Still looking and thanks for sharing.

Here is what to look for in the 2014 model regardless of mileage. 1-broken rear armrest hinges, total cost to replace $900.00. 2- dashboard leather cover will shrink and unglue in hot weather, cost of repair $4500.00; 3- Reactive cruise control that works sporadically, cost to repair, from $700 to $5000 depending on which part is defective; 4- Ceiling handles (above doors) with shrunken leather near the handles edges(unknown cost). 5 - Front bumper cover with broken side clips (near the front wheels), I had mine glued with Bondo and repainted. The engine and transmission appear to be the only troublefree components in the car. You may want to remember the warranty for second hand purchase is 60,000 miles or 5 years. Considering the purchase price and the added outrageous cost for each little repair that comes from poor manufacturing quality control, I would definitely opt for a luxury German or American car. I also learned from a Genesis technician that, even when purchased new, electronic components are warranted for up to 5 year's only, only the engine and transmission are warranted for ten years or 100,000 miles....
