  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So, yesterday tried to start my 2009 4.6 and heard some awful clank-clank sounds coming from the engine. It was knocking for years (I think I created a thread with video here several years ago) but I guess now it finally decided to die.

What years will fit my car? I don't really want to replace it with another 2009 just to experience the same failure again. Will '10-13 work? Or even 5.0 one?

Also, any ballpark on the price/labour? I've never had to do anything like that before. All I can think of is ebay, found some engines there...

Finally, I'm in Toronto - anyone by any chance knows a good place to get it done? :)

Thank you!

I own a repair shop and install engines, but I'm not here to get your job, just to offer advice.
You need to find the names of trusted repair shops (garages) in your area. Call each one and ask if they're interested in quoting the job. Do NOT try to get your own engine. If you supply the engine the only shops which will be interested in that job are shops you don't want to do business with. Let me put it this way: If the replacement engine is bad, who eats the bill? You do! And do you want to get into a fight with the installer about whether the fault is due to their bad installation of a good engine, or their good installation of a bad engine which you supplied?
So call around. See who's interested. Those who are interested will make calls to source a used good engine. The job price will vary with how much they have to pay for a used engine. This way it's one stop shopping for you, and the garage has to assume responsibility for doing the job right with a part they sourced.

The symptom of knocking may have been caused by not using the correct OEM oil filter at some point. There are many threads on the need to use oem oil filter. But as to replacing the engine, a 2011 or 2012 4.6 will be the least expensive way to go. Otherwise the later engines are GDI and use a different transmission and ecm.

Yeah, I was changing oil at the dealership, was just providing them my own synth oil. So only oem filter was used.

I agree with homeofstone. A late model 4.6 will be the way to go.

Well, if you are in Toronto you are more than welcome to get my job :) Problem is I have no idea who to call, my regular mechanic doesn't do stuff like that... I guess gonna ask him if he knows anyone. And check Kijiji/craigslist. Or yellow pages lol.

Got one quote for around 4k... Man, this is getting expensive. Might as well explore parting out my car option...

Yeah after everything is said and done it will probably be higher than that.. and THEN.. you have to really worry about the little issues with the transition..... vibrations etc that were not there before.. then you are just pissed about it.

I would find something like THIS.. 2011 4.6 at this link and make a lower offer. If I buy from across the country.. I find a craigslist mechanic in that city.. .. Mine have been around $50 to $75 depending on how far the guy has to drive.. I give him a list of things to check closely and they will video the process.

If you have a bit of mechanical ability, consider doing the swap yourself. I swapped my 2012 R spec earlier this year. I made a full write up about the process.

Other than the GDI fuel connections, I'm fairly certain the process of swapping a 4.6 vs a 5.0 is the same.

If cost of engine installed is greater than increase in value from current salvage value to market value of similar vehicle, better to salvage

^What if you really like your car and installed things (custom springs, aftermarket exhaust etc) not recognized by market value and can only be gauged by sentiment?

You ever get around to rebuilding/opening up the brok
Blown engine?

Not that it matters to anyone but chasing down the part numbers for Equus 4.6 and Genesis 4.6 appear to be the same (I figured, but certainly wasn't sure). Will prob have to replace engine, and can't see myself getting a new car at the moment (not much appeals to me out there in my current range, though I had a few years).

Sure, as long as you understand the economics

If people based car owning/buying/fixing on economic sensibility the industry would collapse.

Was thinking the same thing lol

LOL, so true. We have a saying in the biz, Never fall in love with a car. If you do, women will become the second most expensive thing in your life. ;)

^Guilty as charged!

Suddenly stuck, need advice: spend $4.5 on used lower mile engine (45-60k)...or just trade it for a Q50...
