I bought my 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R Spec exactly 2 weeks ago. Car performed great for a week and then suddenly on the highway one day the transmission went nuts. Sliding in and of gear, slamming into gears on up and downshift. Engine light on by the time I limped her home.. P0841 code. We wound up at the dealership and they updated the car with TSB 14-AT-001. Car still shifting poorly although it's no longer sliding out of gear. It does however over rev between gears and hits hard on what should be gentle downshifts when decelerating at 40 mph or so. Occasional harsh up shifts as well and she seems to get lost between gears under acceleration. I am taking her back to the service dept. tomorrow, I'm thinking we will replace the Trans fluid pressure switch. I purchased the car with just 63k miles and a clean Carfax.. it is a extremely nice vehicle and other than this issue everything works as it should. For the first week I can say with a very good amount of certainty that I was very impressed by her and happy with my purchase. A great combination of Luxury and performance. Unfortunately it is not warranted and I am paying out of pocket to get the car back on track.. a tough pill to swallow when I just purchased her. That said, I am up for the challenge and want that happy feeling while driving her back ! Any advice I can get from you good people/Genesis owners here on this forum is greatly appreciated. The dealership will likely try different things as we go and it could get expensive. I'd love to get to the heart of it instead of throwing good money after bad. Thanks for your time and effort, I look forward to your responses. Rick.

I already replaced the transmission.

I am having the same issue with my 2012 Equus I just purchased 6 weeks{53kmiles) I am on my second transmission and my manufacturing date was early 2012 March to be exact. My question is are the RSpec transmission interchangeable. Can I replace the 2012 with a 2014 that I’ve heard have some sort of software update that addresses the malfunction in the 2012. Hyundai of course offered me a supposed new transmission with a $5500 dollar price tag. Are they simply offering one of these 2014 RSPECs that I can purchase for 800 bucks with the same 12 month warranty the junk yard is offering.

I’d go to a transmission speciality shop to ask that question. If certain years cross over between years they would probably know. My fear would be the transmission physically fits, but software that controls shift points to RPMs and such may be different and can a 2012 ECM be programmed and updated to function correctly with 2014 transmission? Hyundai must have had some POS transmission batches for if fluid was changed at 40k miles or so, would not think you would now be looking for a 3rd transmission. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure equus & R spec r interchangeable. I did every software update to my 2012 R spec and there was no getting around it I needed a transmission...a new transmission is the exact price you said (5500) and a remanufactured one installed a the dealer will set you back $2800 + $1200 labor. My car's transmission broke with only 64,000 miles on the car, after a short stint of depression when finding out the car I had owned for only 2 weeks needed another for $5,000 to fix, I went to a salvage yard near me and found an R Spec that was totaled with 52,000 miles on it and grabbed the transmission for 500 bucks. The same yard had an Equus transmission available with only 35k miles but they informed me they would not warranty it if I put it in my R Spec because of the difference in vehicle. My family mechanic of 20 years only charged me $700 for the install. The car has been fine since then. Good luck.

On a personal note I will say this... I am over 50 years old and have owned many, many performance cars in my life.. I have never owned a vehicle that in its stock specifications that broke a transmission in under 100k miles only then to jump on a forum and see that it is happening to tons of people who bought the same or similar vehicle.

unfortunately you bought the first transmission Hyundai ever built...

if you llook toward older model 2011 and older, we are rocking the famous ZF6 transmission, I'm at 194k never touched the transmission. My mechanic did a tune up yesterday as well as replacing the starter, he said he was very surprised that the car had no leaks, the Sparks looks very good, no leaks, absolutely nothing, he recommended I keep it for at least 2-3 more years.

Yup, I've been studying up quite a bit and found that the 6 speed is a good tranny. Unfortunately mine came with the 8 speed. I even looked into getting a ZF6 but they wont swap out. Oh well.. I wanted the R Spec 5.0 and it was my first Hyundai and or Genesis purchase.. I had no idea it came with " the first transmission Hyundai ever built " Perhaps they should have done a recall or redesigned the 2012 and up to include the 6 speed.. or at least warned the world of their mistake so consumers that are new to Genesis wouldn't wind up in this position.. anyway, congrats on the mileage Panda, sounds like you definitely found a keeper.

So just for clarification you are an owner of a Genesis correct if so what model. I'm trying to be as informed as possible as the mechanic that replaced my tranny and has my car right now can't understand what's going on(he's not on these forums). As you may know through experience many transmission mechanics outside of Hyundai Genesis dealerships are unfamiliar with the Equus. I found a 2014 Equus tranny online with 12k miles on it for 850 dollars. I'm just wondering can this be used in my 2012 as appears not much changed from 2012-2016 with theses cars powertrain.

I drive a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec. And if you found a 2014 Equus with that little mileage for that price...grab it ! I was pretty sure that 2012 through 2014 8 speed transmissions transferred just fine between the R-Spec and the Equus but if you're going from Equus to Equus just from a 14 to a 12...I'm 98% sure you're golden. I was cramming research online and if I remember correctly there the same model number transmission. If you want to be on the safe side call your local Hyundai dealership and speak to both the service and parts department I'm sure you'll get the answer you want.

I'm not a mechanic I'm just a guy who was in the same exact spot you're in right now only a few weeks ago, so I feel your pain and wanna help. I had literally bought the car and drove it for 11 days before the transmission broke.. it was one of the more stressful couple of weeks I've had in recent memory. Everyone was telling me I had to buy this crazy expensive remanufactured or new transmission when I had just paid $15,000 for a car.. I trusted my instinct found a perfectly good low mileage wrecked car identical to mine swapped out the tranny and have been riding happily ever since after spending only $1,200 total.. oh and if something goes wrong I have a 12 month warranty on parts andn my mechanic agreed to install another for half price to help me out. The transmission you're getting is super low mileage !!!!! $850 is a steal see if you can get your guy to install it for what my did : $700 flat. Oh and make sure you get the correct transmission fluid from the dealership for this transmission you're putting in..I looked into it and it's important...use the right stuff made by Hyundai, you're asking for trouble if you use just regular old ATF.

Ebay typically matched the part up pretty well. if they say it fits, then 90% of the time it'll fit.

Ummm...disregard my last post.. Sorry, I looked it up. The 2014 Equus interchange part number is : 400-62404
See :
Automatic Transmission 5.0L 8 Speed Fits 13-16 EQUUS 815887 (Fits: 2014 Hyundai Equus)

Your cars transmission interchange part number is : 400-52000
See :
Automatic Transmission 5.0L 8 Speed Fits 12 EQUUS 429731 (Fits: Hyundai Equus)

It looks like they will NOT direct swap. However 2012 Genesis and R Spec both share the same interchange part number with your car : 400-52000

Great info I really appreciate the response at least I don’t go in ignorant

What I find strange is how the 2014 tranny fits models 2013-16 but the 2012 only fits 2012. My concern is that I keep buying used 2012 trannies which from the many posts on this site are suspect and have to R and R every other month particularly when I don’t know what the manufacturer date of the new/used tranny was. I’m trying to figure out what Hyundai is offering at a $5500 price point. It’s as if they know you may get 12k miles out of which is what Hyundai Genesis warranties it for and after that your SOL.

I’ve lost like 10 pounds over the past 2 weeks because the stress. I traded in my 2013 Lexus GS350 with 115k miles for this car and feel like a real Dumbo right now.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I been on this forum and had 4 Genesis vehicles in the last 11 years. Fortunately each one of them have been trouble free, my two cents has always been: enjoying these things, without a basic active warranty, is simply playing Russian roulette as I have observed that 999/1000 of the time one will be fine, however, it is that 1000th person’s luck seems to run out more often than not...

I want I wound up swapping transmission and was fine for a year and a half.. remember me ? It happened again today so it's back to eBay for another f****** transmission. Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R spec is like a really hot girlfriend.. she looks great but you know it's not going to last.

Lol good analogy
Well I’m on my third trans of my 2013 Rspec
Got lucky my dealer stepped up and got Hyundai corporate to change it again at 135k .
First one made 47k Second on lasted to 135k
Now I have 146k on the car hoping it holds out
For a bit

Found a recked 2013 rspec (rear ended) with only 16k
There asking 6500 might buy as a parts car lol
