  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2009 Genesis 4.6 Sedan with 100k miles on it. I purchased it in May of this year, and all of a sudden my power steering is going in and out. I contacted John Amato Hyundai where the car had been serviced previously for more information, and they told me that the previous owner had spent fifteen THOUSAND dollars trying to fix this issue. They had rebuilt the whole power steering system and it is still persistent. Their dealer-level scan tool identified a code that has no definition. In short, they cannot find the issue my car is experiencing and cannot fix it. If any of you have heard of or had this issue and know how to fix it PLEASE HELP. I am deeply financially invested into this car and I really don't want to have to sell it for a third of what I've put into it.

only time I had problem with Power steering like you describe is my alternator was dying...

I had an issue with my power steering where it would go out. Turns out they think there was some leak in the rack. After numerous trips to the dealership one time they kept it over night and the next day there was no fluid in the reservoir. Ended up changing out the entire rack and that fixed the problem.

I wish it was that simple. There is no Ieak. Even Hyundai doesn't identify the code. They have basically rebuilt the whole system already. Guess I'll be moving on to a Lexus LS 460 or similar. Got any suggestions for a interesting or luxurious car under 10k that is reliable?

Is the 4.6 the one with an electric power steering pump? If so has anyone checked the sensors and connections to the pump?

The 09 4.6 had an electric pump that Powered a hydrolic system (not full electric only). The pump and the rack and pinion and every single cable and hose have all been replaced. No fix

SamHartman, did you ever get this issue sorted out? My power steering has been intermittently going on my '09 4.6 and I'm contemplating what parts to replace or whether to take it to the dealer.

Lothain,

I eventually did cave and I took my vehicle to the dealer. Since the parts were so expensive, the techs tried reprogramming or resetting the computer associated with the pump - and it worked! Totally fixed the issue for 8 months now! (Keep in mind that the pump and the rack had been replaced less than a year prior, in your case they may have actually failed but I'd try this first bc it cost me 200$ instead of 2000$!)

Good luck!

Sam

IMO some of the PS units had high current draw and/or electrical systems couldn't deliver the needed current. I could tell when turning the wheel at zero speed with headlights and AC on: the headlights would dim momentarily and occasionally the PS motor would drop out and the wheel would turn to concrete. As soon as I let off the wheel, the PS came back. So it was an "under load" condition.

My solution: I upgraded to a '12 ... but I know that doesn't work for everyone.

Thanks very much, I'll bring it in this weekend and mention this to them.

@Gunkk not a bad idea I may have to try that =D

If they don't know what you're on about I can see if I can find my service records for you as well

That would be incredible! Don't waste too much time on it but if you have them handy I'd greatly appreciate it!
