If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi Members,
I just did my oil change last week and the mechanic initially put in only 6 quarts. When i told him that as per manual the 5.0 takes more than 8 quarts he put in 9 quarts of oil. When asked what happens to the excess oil he said it goes to the oil filter. Is that true? How do you accurately measure 8.x oil as per manual??

The oil capacity listed includes the filter.

The oil capacity for the RWD 5.0 is 8.45 quarts(8 1/2 quarts) of oil including the oil filter. Your mechanic overfilled your oil pan and it could cause issues down the road by causing too much oil pressure which can weaken important seals like your rear main seal. However, the AWD model uses 9.72 quarts of oil due to a larger oil pan I assume so hopefully the RWD model seals can handle 9 quarts without any issues.

You need a new mechanic. I've not seen a car yet that does not have a dipstick to check for proper oil level. Any 12 year old with an interest in cars knows how to do it.

A little extra oil is not a big deal, but a lot of extra oil can be. Check your dipstick and of more than a half inch over some should be taken out. You need 8.45 so it may be in range.

Sorry. I was replying to EdP's post about never seeing a car without a dipstick.

This mechanic was at the dealership. You dont even know how much oil he would put as 99% people dont watch over their shoulders. This idiot didnt even know how much oil the engine needs. Next time i will make sure to give only 8 bottles of 1 quart each and one 1/2 bottle. Will check the dipstick too. Thank you.

Technology is wonderful. Add cost, reduce reliability. Genius.

I can't see that increasing oil pressure. The problem is that if it is enough over, it can raise the oil level in the pan high enough that the crankshaft hits the oil. This can whip the oil into foam, and that doesn't pump well, so it drastically reduces oil pressure.

...I've not seen a car yet that does not have a dipstick to check for proper oil level. ...

Sadly, Jaguars and BWMs haven't had any engine oil dipsticks for several years now.

I just did mine Sunday, (plus filter). I put 9 qts in. The level with dipstick read 3/4 on the hash mark scale. An extra 1/2 quart probably = 1/8" higher level, or less.

Good to know! I've always done my own oil changes and have been concerned when 8.5 quarts doesn't even register on the dip stick. I kept adding a bit at a time until registering full and found that it indeed takes almost 10 quarts. Was beginning to think there was something peculiar about my car...

Oh good to know that nothing is going to happen if I put in 9 qts then :)

Note : mine is a Canadian version 5.0 with AWD - something that was not available in the USA in 2015. Not sure when the 5.0 was available in AWD in the States. I didn't realize that the 5.0 AWD vs the 5.0 RWD took 1.27 quarts more to fill until now. Just thought my car was a bastard child...

I think poster #3 meant to say crankcase pressure, not oil pressure.
I think he's right.

They're called hot film sensors and give a very accurate reading on fill level. Doesn't even require a scan tool to access either.

Correct. To be honest I do not know the exact reason for the oil seal failures, but was told that it has to do with excessive pressure caused by the extra oil in the engine lubrication system. To sum it up, over filled engines are not good for engine life. I keep my oil level between L and F.

Yes, I'm aware of that. I'm also (by direct experience) aware that they fail more often than the mechanical dipsticks do. They also don't give you any feel for oil condition.
