If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 0W-30

What is every one's take on the 0W-20 or 0W-30 fully synthetic oil?

Do you think it is worth the hype and would you use it in your Genesis?

I was in Wal-Mart today and it was $22 for 5qt. Even though this car calls for 5W-20, 0W-30 according to Amsoil protects just the same in cold weather.

Anyone use 0W-30 before?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I am now using Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE in my Genesis (it's Mobil, not Mobile).

Many experts believe that auto makers have switched to specifying 0W-20 in order to get better fuel economy at the possible expense of engine reliability. Auto makers are required by US law to meet average fuel economy standards (CAFE), and the corporate average MPG targets keep increasing in upcoming years. Also, with the recent high oil and gasoline prices, consumers are looking closely at MPG. Since the EPA MPG numbers are in whole digits (no decimals) even a few tenths of MPG could raise the number by a full digit.

Mobil 1 0W-30 sold in the US is actually called 0W-30 AFE (Advanced Fuel Economy). They claim it has a special formation with anti-friction additives that has improved fuel economy compared to other xW-30 motor oils.

Be advised however, that the Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE is designed for different engines than European Formula 0W-30 oils, such as Amsoil 0W-30 and Castrol Syntec 0W-30. These European Formula 0W-30 are specifically designed to meet the requirements for ACEA A5/B5 as required by many European cars such as BMW, Mercedes, VW, etc. The Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE oil (like all 0W-20 oils) meets the ACEA A1/B1 specification.

In my opinion, the only 0W-30 oil that should be used in a car that specifies 0W-20 is Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE. The other European Formula 0W-30 oil are not suitable for the Genesis.

I think the answer to your question may have a lot to do with where you live. Wallymn lives in Minnesota. So if you live in MN or Canada, or some place where the winter ambient temperature during the height of day never breaks freezing, then it maybe worth considering. If not, it's probably best to stick with the 5w-20 or 5w-30.

Haha, thats funny. I am now just noticing my spelling mistakes in this thread and the other one. I love being dyslexic! ...I'm not kidding either. :D

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question in detail. All this additional information is great.

I'm living up in Massachusetts where the winters vary. We get hit with just about everything from time to time. I'm actually expecting a cool winter this year... I just have that feeling. We need a remote start for this car.

I am from Boston (living in MN for 15 years), back there temps might drop into the teens but for the most part it isn't really cold, (we can go a month without getting up to 0). a 5w20 would probably work for you (it is what I run in the summer)

Yeah, you guys up in MN get some nasty cold weather. I have a feeling that this winter is going to be cold all around the nation. I hope not though... (I have no technical data to back up this theory)

What happened the other night. The Bruins trampled all over you guys!

The 0W30 seems like a good deal at Wal-Mart so I might take a stab at it. It seems to be an all around quality oil for cold and hot weather.

I have 0W30 in my crankcase. Oil is Oil if you change it at 3000 miles. At 7500 highway miles- I choose the Mobil 1- peace of mind.

cAN THERE BE SUCH A THING AS 0 WEIGHT OIL, DON/T THINK SO, MUST BE A SALES GIMICK.i WILL USE 5- 30W OIL JN MY 4.6 GENESIS

This past September, I goofed. I put in Mobil-1 0W-40, thinking that if it was good enough for Mercedes, it was good enough for Genesis. (this is the oil that Mercedes calls for). I was WRONG. Did not like it. When the weather got cold, it did not flow very well on start up. I could hear engine "tick" until oil warmed up. I changed it to (before I had to) Quaker State Q-Horsepower 5W-30, and am very happy with it. Engine is now quiet on cold starts, plus (and this may only be in my head) the engine is now much smoother when I drive it.

I'm running the 0W-30 as well, and so far have no complaints. Since it has been cold here in Jacksonville this past week (well - Florida cold, anyway) I have had no complaints on startup or after warmup. So far, so good.

Ebay has Hyundai billet aluminum Mobil 1 oil cap replacements- take a looksee at mine!

Mobil-1 0W-40 is a European formula oil that is not appropriate for the Genesis and similar cars. Same is true for Castrol 0W-30. Mobil 1 0W-30 is perfectly fine since it is not a European formula.

Mobil-1 0W30 seems to be working good for me. Having cold starts at 15F in the morning. I let the engine warm up for 3 to 5 minutes and were off.
