Parking Brake Engaging while driving

A few days ago, I was stuck in stop and go traffic for about 2 hours and the car kept saying parking brake engaged. I was using the Auto Hold function which I normally don't.

Is this something to preserve the auto hold hardware from overheating or something? Like if it's been used too long, it uses the parking brake to hold the car instead?

Yes. The auto hold system can only sustain 30 minutes of operation per hour. Once you reach that, the car will start running the parking brake instead.

The Auto Hold system is a lockout solenoid in the ABS valve body. It does rely on the pump to hold pressure in the event of bleed down, which is why they limit runtime. The auto hold feature is more responsive to throttle override, where the parking brake takes a moment to let go.

I use Auto Hold all the time in traffic... If there's a train or the like, I just put it in Park.
