Resolution to flutter at 25-30 mph

2016 3.8 AWD Hyundai Genesis

I decided to start a new thread since the previous one has so many pages of entries going back several years.

I have similar symptoms and have tried many fixes described in the previous thread.

It started with a small vibration between 25-30 mph, accompanied by a fluttering sound that seemed to be coming from the center console area.

First dealer replaced a bent wheel, no change. Second dealer replaced the drive shaft assembly. The caused the flutter to go away but it was replaced by a stronger vibration at exactly 28 mph at cold start, which goes away after about 10 minutes of driving. The dealer then did a force balance and added a 2 washer shim, again without result. They recommended replacing my new Kumho tires with original Michelins.

I have seen on the other thread that these issues happen with the original tires as well so I do not give any credence to that.

At this point, unless someone has a fix that actually works I am going to live with this and try to avoid driving at that speed during the first ten minutes. I have found that placing the car in Sport mode makes it easier to drive 25 mph in my neighborhood.

Sucks that there is no fix for it yet, dealer did a lot of work though, so kudos to them for working with you and not saying the usual crap: "can't replicate the issue" and shrug it off.

I haven't put a GoPro under there yet, but I'm developing a sneaking suspicion the vibration is coming from the diff housing moving around in the bushings. A new driveshaft just gets a geebo that's not worn out.

I had the flutter at 25 mph with the noise and they were able to get rid of the flutter and noise by replacing part of my rear diff but that never got rid of the vibration completely. I thought part of it was the OEM tires at the time but I have recently replaced them and got everything balanced and an alignment only to have the vibration increase with the replacement tires. Just dropped off the car at the dealer today to have them look at it again. They said they will look everything over and road force balance the tires if needed. I still think that my issue is with the drive shaft itself and not the tires or balance since I have rotated them twice since installing them and nothing made anything better.

I had the driveshaft replaced and that only took care of the noise. The vibration is still there. I saw someone had it fixed by replacing a bent wheel but that may have been a different vibration from what most of us have.

I am afraid, we are out of luck. During my last visit to the dealership, I was told by the service adviser that the new factory rep assigned to them specifically told him that "there is nothing we can do about the vibration". Honestly, I am not sure what else we can do as the owners, but I feel that we were shown to the door with no desire or ability to fix the issue...

I have the flutter/tapping noise but no vibration so I'm going to leave things alone since I've seen posts that their issue didn't change or got worse after the D/S replacement

Got my car back on Thursday and they looked at the rear diff and the drive shaft and found everything was ok. They did say that they felt the vibration on the test drive so they did a free road force balance and found I had a bent rim. So when I got back home I took off the rim that they suggested was the issue and put on my spare and it did make a difference. The vibration is not gone but it's an 75% improvement then before so I'm ordering a refurb rim today. I still think that the driveshaft is the issue but if once I get the wheel swapped out and the vibration stays at the level it's at now I can live with it.

I just bought my 2016 LOADED (all 3 option pkgs) 3.8 AWD Genny with 25,000 miles on it ($21,000 - not bad, huh?) It has a flutter-type vibration at 30-39mph *when it's cold* - goes away after 3 or 4 miles of driving. My son has an identical (except for color) 2016 Genny with ~35,000 miles. He has the vibration at 28-30 (only!) and has decided to live with it - as I am inclined to do. BUT ... I thought I would look on line and have ended up here, so I'll keep my options open. You guys are GOOD at clear statements, thank you very much!
Long long experience (I'm not young) tells me this is a driveshaft - but I have to wonder how many drive shafts this AWD thing has. I can't believe it's a tire or wheel because those would be a much lower, speed-dependent thump-thump that would get worse with increasing speed.
We'll stay tuned.

Nice price on your car. I turned mine in with 31000 on lease and the dealer got $28k for it when they sold. It was mint ultimate. I too had the flutter but what is funny is I never noticed it until about 3 months left in my lease. What a strange issue.

I have had the driveshaft replaced 2 times only to have the vibration getting worse. It's not the tires. It's not the brakes.

Come on Hyundai / Genesis!!! There is obviously a flaw somewhere in the drive train which is affecting a lot of owners. Lets get a fix.

I'm not sure what all is entailed for a class action law suite, but it may be worth looking into, as I think there is enough people out there with this problem.

I think my flutter is gone entirely. I just did subframe collars on mine and haven't been able to get it to shake again- and the flutter was bad. I haven't replaced the propshaft yet so if it has a balance issue it's still an issue. I drove with the flutter for so long that I didn't actually notice it was gone until a few hours ago.

My flutter was solved when they replaced part of the drive shaft but all that did was cause the entire car to shake at speeds over 80. Dealer wont even look at it anymore. Now with no other traffic and the expressways wide open I am constantly able to drive at real speeds on my daily work commute and I hate this car more and more every time I drive it the faster I go. My dealers last response was just not to drive over 80. I would even pay out of pocket to fix this if there was an actual fix.

Part of the driveshaft? The rear shaft is two pieces and balanced as a whole. That's why there's paint marks to line up the splines. If your dealer replaced only half of it, that's probably the reason for the vibration.

What exactly is a flutter, is it a sound, or a feeling? Is it like a short back and forth wobble?

If it goes away when warm, could it be that the engine is running "uneven" when cold, like maybe only part of the cylinders are firing? If you shift to neutral, does it go away instantly?

The flutter is a sound that comes from the center console area. It’s still there even if you coast with the engine off. I tried it. It is usually resolved with a new drive shaft but the vibration is still there.
