Hi everyone, I was shocked today while changing my first oil change from the dealer.

I bought the car when it was 38k and now it's 43k. After oil change was done with tire rotation.

the bill came out to $84. But, advisor recommend to replace Battery (39%) cost = $404.75

Brake Pads, Front (OEM) - replace, Machine Rotors. = $341.19

Plus Shop charge $19.50 plus tax $45.64 total came out to $811.08.

I know I can get it cheaper using local mechanic shop to replace brake pads and change the battery by myself watching youtube.

is that price normal to you? or they try to ripped me off? my previous lexus didn't cost that much from the dealer.

any advice or recommendation will be very helpful for maintaining my first genesis.

thanks everyone.

Dealers set their own prices and are usually higher than the independents. Your oil change seems about right.

Machining rotors these days does not seem to be a great idea. Going back to my 2015 I paid about $300 for new pads and new rotors. That was at my local shop, about $100 less than the dealer.
The battery seems about the same as other dealers, but still much higher than it can be had elsewhere. Given the age of your car it may be getting to replacement time but you can get it checked for free at Advanced Auto and the like.

The shop charge is pure profit and most have been doing it for years. They charge for rags, haz mat disposal and things that are just part of the cost of doing business. No different that the phone and light bill.

Seeing as new rotors are being the preferred route to take over the turning of the old ones I’m wondering if there’s a brand preference for quality new rotors?
I myself have always preferred NAPA for OEM quality parts, bit more pricey but always have peace of mind using what I considered the professional’s choice.

You get what you pay for. The only difference I look for on a rotor to decide which to purchase is the lateral run-out spec.
Some rotors are machined to a tighter run-out tolerance. Some are .002 while others are .004. Mostly those rated severe, towing, or heavy duty. I also like the coated rotors just to keep them from rusting and looking like crap. Raybestos, Powerstop, Centric are reputable brands. Rock auto has many to choose from.

Those prices seem on par with other dealers, other than the Napleton dealers around the country.

Going cheaper doesn't always mean better. I just got notification that I have a customer coming in this Saturday that didn't like our price on brakes on his G80, so he went to Firestone to get them done and now his ABS light is on. We'll find out Saturday what they did wrong.

That price is typically high especially if you don't need those parts quite yet.

Just took a look at my front pads with 44k miles. New pads are a little under 7/16" thick. Mine have 1/4" of pad left. Should go another 20k miles easily. Service limit is 2mm (under 1/8"). There's a spring metal tab on the pads that will contact the rotor and start squealing when it's time to replace them. You'll know. Unless your pedal is pulsating or the car pulling one direction under braking, your fine.

If you decide to tackle it yourself (not that tough... go for it!) go with Rock Auto. Coated rotors. Any name brand premium pads. Service manuals here: Hyundai Genesis - Google Drive

Check the battery first with a load tester b/4 buying one. I have one like this: https://www.amazon.com/OTC-3180-Bat...Amp+Battery+Load+Tester&qid=1582729844&sr=8-6

O'Reilly has the AGM battery for $200.

Save money... DIY.

My dad just had his battery replaced at the dealership...$400. He is simply not strong enough to install a battery on his own and had to eat it.

I tried to have my rotors resurfaced at my local indie shop - did not go well. They usually do good work but the Genesis wasn't having it. Drove around the block with the pedal kicking back all the way... New rotors & pads, installed - just under $300. Problem solved. My old Infiniti was pretty tolerant with resurfacing em at least once - go figure.

Oil change (5.0 V8) ~ $90. Takes a bit over 8 quarts synthetic.

Thank you everybody for sharing your thought.

Last Friday morn had my Blue Angel running around, until after a quick stop hopped in, hit the button and tick-tick-tick-tick-tick. Rut-row!
Waited a minute, tried again and same result. I called HRA and said AAA will take an hour. !@#$%&...no Bueno!

I figured the battery was giving out as I'd been feeling some lack of power and quirkiness for the past week to two, so pulled up Advance Auto on my phone and lo and behold, 1 AGM left at my store on-sale for 199.99. Quickly found a $40 off coupon and locked it down, applied my cash-back site and paid with 10% off at Advance on one of my cards; not bad! Fingers crossed...things were looking up.🤞

AAA took an hour and 20, but jumped me and drove straight to AA. Upon telling the kid why I was there, he said "Oh, you're here for the beast" lol. I told him he'd need to install it and we had a laugh but took all of ten minutes and I was rolling with a noticeable difference in power. $152.79 done!

Moral: Use common sense and you'll never pay more than you have to.

Damned good deal. Did they plug in a memory saver while changing it out?

Seems like these cars get a little quirky the way they run when the battery is getting low.

Yep, the kid sure did, Ed. I was impressed with how quick and professional he swapped the whole thing out. All I did was pull out the trunk mat, lol.
He unplugged the backup from the fuse panel, took the old battery and within 10 minutes I had the $22+tax core refund confirm in my email.

And you're right about how they run. I'd been feeling some odd stutters and no oomph when stepping on it a time or two, so I was beginning to get concerned something needed checking, but luckily this battery issue seems to have brought her back to life. Looking back, I now find it comical that even the AAA driver said, "I have three Hyundai's and the batteries are good for right about 3 years to the date, set your clock!" Seems he was right.

Great deal on that battery. What's up with the AGM lifespan? My wife's old '07 Santa Fe battery lasted until 2014. When I picked up my '15 in Nov. '18 the car sat for a month and the battery was toast. There seems to be some kind of voltage threshold that once it battery goes below it, in no way will it charge up. Rather pricey for getting only three years out of it.

Agreed. Not sure of the reason, but I'll be waiting to see what happens in 36 months from now. My receipt shows 3-Yr Free Replacement, so hoping I'm good for a while.

Here's the link in case anyone needs one soon (and anytime you purchase online from Advance, do a quick coupon search as they run 10-25% off non-stop):

Ok you talked me into it. My 15 3.8 has the original battery in it.
Figure it must be due. Pulled the trigger and bought that H9 from Advance. Thanks Whitey!

If I am not due for a mileage service at specific intervals, an oil change and tire rotation is about $100. I use full synthetic even though they recommend using a synthetic blend but they charge extra, hence the higher price. Don't buy parts from the dealer unless you are a stickler on OE parts. At 43k miles, I'm almost certain you do not need your rotors resurfaced/replaced. If you have warping or the steering wheel pulsates when braking, then you probably do.

Buy from a large distributor to help offset costs. Kudos if you can do it yourself; you'll save even more.

My 2015 is still on the original battery and doesn't seem to be giving out? I thought AGM's last a long time? The battery in my cousin's V10 M5 lasted 12 years. It couldn't supply the amps to star the V10 but it was still able to start a V8 so he shoved it into his 427 Shelby Cobra replica. That thing has like no accessories to power so it could easily be started with an old battery.

My 2011 YF Turbo went through a battery in 4 years..

There are so many variables it is impossible to say how long a battery will last. Frequency of use, length of trips, temperature, accessories use all play into it. When I lived in a cold climate I'd replace the battery at the start of winter after year 4. My neighbor stopped by as I was swapping out a battery and he laughed at me for wasting money when it was still working. A couple of months later, he was changing his with a temperature about 10 degrees.

Installed my new battery today. Not real pleased how the vent line plugged into the battery.
Not as tight a fit as the OEM battery. Feels like it could rattle loose. I'll have to check it down the road.
While I was in there I checked the spare tire air pressure. 11 psi! First time I ever checked it. 60 psi now.
