Hi, I wanted to share my experience with getting new tires at the dealership. Apparently I drive my car pretty hard, but....... I've been having a freaking blast doing it!! ;)

I'm at 24k miles with my 2019 G70 3.3T Sport and I needed new tires. I had them replaced today at the dealership and I wanted to share what it costs at the dealership to get stock tires again.

On this model, here are the tire specs:
Michelin Pilot Sport
Rear is 255/35
Front is 225/40

The cost (w/out tax) was:
Labor: $ 517.76
Back 2 Wheels: $ 494.64
Front 2 wheels: $ 464.00
Alignment: $ 160.00
----------------------------
$ 1,636.40

Pictures of invoice next.

JFYI.
Thanks,
James

Appreciate the info! That labor cost is ridiculous. Lol.

Good price on the tires. They pretty much made no money on the tires, but the labor price, holy s***...... We charge $100 to mount and balance. No charge for disposal or wheel weights. It's rolled into the "shop supply" charge, and $99.99 for an alignment. But then again, CA is more expensive on everything.

Wow! They don't call them Stealerships for nothing.
I walked out of a "Tire Barn" recently when they wanted to charge me $175 for mount and balance for 4 wheels on my wifes Pilot. Couple blocks away I got it done for $125.
Curious if the alignment needed adjusted?

$500 labor is a ripoff for mounting and balancing 4 tires on a car.

I've gone to Firestone for alignments. They offer a lifetime alignment for $200, good for one car, one owner, but you can get it aligned whenever you want.

This used to cost about $140, it's gone up! But it's still a good deal if you keep your car forever and buy the service early - and have a Firestone store close by.

That’s an insane price for mounting and balancing. Maybe the tire changer machine was broke so they removed by hand and mounted completely by hand and then balanced on an old bubble balance. Per tire should not take a good mechanic more than 10 minutes a tire to do both a full tire change and spin balance. More than $25.00 per tire is a screw job. I normally order tires online and take to my local hole in the wall small tire shop and usually pay $15.00 per tire when I bring everything off the car to them ready to go.

I I bought a set of Michelin PS4s 2x255/35/20 and 2x285/30/20 for my car, I paid $1712.10 mounting, balancing, changing/swapping whole wheels between summer/winters twice a year is included in that price. Heck....and the warranty also is included. Discount Tires FTW! they beat everyone's prices.

Checked @ Sams Club today. Original Michelin PS4's (Sport 3.3 RWD) mounted & balanced with lifetime rotation & Balancing was $1280 total including all labor, taxes & fee's. The mounting part was $80.00 of that $1280 and also includes Road Hazard warranty for the life of the tire.

So ugh. Sigh. I have bad news about the tire replacement from the dealer.

Since the new tires, I tried to drive on the freeway for the first time today. Everything seems fine under 70 MPH, but when I get to 70 MPH, my car starts shaking and my steering wheel vibrates like crazy. I think they didn't balance the tires well.

I will never go to the dealer for tires again. :(
I learned my lesson I guess. :(

Does anyone have any suggestions where to go to fix this? I don't want to go back to the dealer again for tire issues, ever....
I know my wheels were aligned properly as my steering was straight. So it seems to me like a balancing issue.

I'm in San Diego, CA.

Thanks,
James

Understand your reluctance to go back, but you paid them to do it right. Make sure it is not something really stupid like loose lug nuts. They should be willing to correct the problem at no charge. Any good tire shop should be able to correct it but be prepared to pay.

So it seems to me like a balancing issue.

Sorry to hear, James. But I think you've got it. My suggestion: Locate a tire shop with a Hunter Road Force Balancer. Get your tires balanced there. This should get rid of the vibration at high speed.

Although EdP is totally correct, I cannot recommended Discount Tire enough. I've used them for 30-40 years and they just get it done. They will also fix flats on tires they didn't sell. You may pay for the balancing but you will be done pretty quickly.

It could be that a balancing weight fell off (improperly installed).

Always makes me nervous when they remove and mount new tires. It never fails that they usually scratch and scrape the rims. Our sport wheels seem like they will scratch very easily if care is not taken.

Update.

So thank you all for your suggestions. Here are my replies before getting my problem fixed. After my replies I'll explain how it was fixed.

Discount tire

Apparently Discount tire is 'America's Tire' in CA. They were all closed on Sundays. But thank you, and I will keep them in mind.

No missing or loose lug nuts. I was in the Bay Area last week when I got the new tires at the dealer in Fremont, CA. My job has required me to travel there lately, and I /really/ needed new tires. I was afraid to drive back to San Diego without them. So here I am in San Diego and afraid to drive anywhere, so I needed a local option. ;)

Interesting you say this. I noticed they (sloppily) removed my previous weights and it initially made me think they fell off. No, they just (sloppilly) removed the old ones, for some reason. See my later comments how it was fixed. Thank you!

Agreed. They left a mess on my rims where they removed the old weights. I need to figure out how to clean that mess up.

Thank you all for your recommendations and help.
OK, so now for the update!

Because all locations of America's Tire were closed today, I asked my family for recommendations. They recommended Big O Tires in Temecula, CA. I went there and they fixed the problem for $30. It was indeed a balancing issue..... The dealer not only used the wrong weights, but they also put them in the wrong place on my rims! I took my car out on the freeway after that, and it felt like a luxury car again. So happy it's fixed.

I'm unhappy that the dealer charged so much money in labor and didn't even do it right. You would think for that price they would try to at least clean up where they removed the old weights, for example:

Anyway, I have found my place to do anything tire-related now. In the future, I will also consider America's Tire (Discount Tire) too since so many of you swear by them. Maybe just anywhere but the dealer!!!

Thanks,
James

There may be a better way to do this, but I'd use goof off to remove the leftover adhesive from the weights.

I'll never get tired to say the same thin, AVOID stealerships for doing anything on your cars unless is warranty related. Many, many bad stories about their irresponsible bad work, lack of knowledge and of course hyper inflated prices.

I'm on the fence with this - even for the free oil changes. So far the first was okay (but I'll specify to not put my car through the paint shredder, I mean car wash) so maybe I'll get lucky on my 6 free oil changes over 3 years.
