I'll bet you woud get better gas mileage at the speed limit I'll also bet you will be even more pissed when you get a ticket going 100 MPH or have an accident at 100 MPH (if you survive).

Around here we regularly have people going 100 MPH and quite a few of them kill themselves and a bunch of other people.

Everyone who goes 100 MPH knows that they are excellent drivers and everyone else is a terrible driver. But there really is a reason for speed limits. If the "bad" driver pulls in front of the excellent driver going 100 MPH, it is probably because he had no way of determining that the excellent driver was going 100 MPH (one second there was no one in is rear view mirror the next second he was there).

I am amazed that at age 62 you are still alive and still have a license.

Dick does have a point, albeit I think his conclusion is wrong. Speed doesn't kill. It's the deceleration that does.

I've driven extensively on the Italian autostrada over the past 15 years. 90-100 mph is the norm there. The traffic "flows" at 140-160 kph, and the guys "in the left lane" are typcially doing 210 kph (130 mph).

When I was in Italy the drivers obeyed the rules. Slow traffic kept right. You NEVER passed on the right. Turn signals were always used. Drivers actually looked in ALL of their mirrors before they made a move. No one was reading a book, or eating, or putting on make-up, or texting. When people drive smart AND predictably it's quite safe and easy to drive 100 mph.

Unfortunatly most roads in America are filled with morons who should never be behind the wheel of a car. As I used to tell my friends in Italy, the most unsafe thing on the autostrada is an American driver.

Another thing I like about driving in Italy is:

When you are passing a string of cars, (you are in the passing lane), and a big Mercedes, or Alfa comes up behind you, thinking you are going too slow, as long as you keep your left turn signal blinking, they will leave you alone. It's like yours saying that I'm staying here in this passing lane until I pass all these cars, and only then, will I move back to the right lane. If you don't have that left turn blinker on, they will flash their headlights for you to move over.

I mostly drive in France and Italy, and another thing the Italians do, is when on a two lane road, if the car behind you wants to pass, he will pass. Don't matter that there is another car coming toward him and you. It is expected that you will move over to the right, and the car coming toward you is expected to move over to his right, and the passing car passes with the solid center line right down the center of his car. Shook me up the first couple times, but I got used to it. The French don't do this.

Drivers in Europe are much better than drivers in the US.

Couldn't agree more. I've also noticed some variance from state to state (i.e., drivers in some states are less stupid than others). As a Georgia resident, I will say with great certainty that 80% of the drivers here are a menace. This doesn't seem to be the situation in other areas where people actually do exercise some common sense behind the wheel like checking before switching lanes and using turn signals. I used to like to drive somewhat "enthusiastically," but realized long ago that no matter how skilled you are behind the wheel it would take only one moron and some bad luck to end up damaged, disabled, or dead. Stupid people are the bane of my existence.

2-lane roads in Italy? They don't exist! All 2-lane roads are at least "3-lanes wide". I've done the exact maneuver you describe above. I pulled up behind a "slow poke" on a 2-lane country road with near-continuous oncoming traffic. I put on my left turn signal. Magically the guy in front of me squeezed over to the shoulder and the oncoming cars did the same. I passed up the middle with plenty of room to spare. I once saw some Italians do a double pass on a 2-lane road (i.e., a guy was passing another guy at the same time he was passing a "slow poke" with oncoming traffic). Everyone just did what they were supposed to do. Unfortunately I've noticed over the past 15 years that Italians are developing American driving habits.

Based on the rather juvenile response, I'm doubtful he's actually 62, but I digress.

Without knowing the facts -- posted speed limit, location, traffic conditions, etc. it's difficult to make assumptions based on an internet post, but I can say that as a former LEO, anyone going 45mph+ over the speed limit in front of me, that lived to speak of it, got their car impounded... whether they came with me or I allowed them to be picked up by a friend or relative depended on their attitude. Their car was gone though as these types of people don't learn from a traffic ticket. Having their car taken from them for a month was an eye opener though. From my experience (scraping up the remains of hotshots on the freeway), those who feel they can handle such speeds on public roadways (in the US, that is - could care less what they do in other countries; the infrastructure, driver skill level and distractions are incomparable) are usually the worst drivers... they have an automatic sense of invincibility and thus are a hazard to themselves and all other motorists. Combine that with other inattentive drivers doing their hair, talking on the cell phone, yelling at the kids in the backseat, driving with their knee while eating a big mac, etc. etc. -- you have a recipe for a fatality.

I don't think most realize that in most jurisdictions, reckless driving (also varies from area to area, some are 15mph over, some are up to 30mph over) can be an arrestable offense. Depending on jurisdiction, number of previous infractions, whether the driver was engaged in a speed contest and other variables, the vehicle may be impounded 30-90 days. If a car lawfully pulls onto the roadway, you t-bone them and kill them? You're going to jail and it will obviously go on your criminal record - for the world (including employers) to see.

I'll never understand it. It saves little time and the odds are against you. My advice: go become a real race car driver and prove your skills. Anyone can drive recklessly and become roadkill on a public roadway.

Not trying to preach or lecture... only educate. Be safe, at any speed.

I really don't think Flyboy is 62. Additionally, in response to ShoNuff, if you add 15% to your number, that is the number of drivers that are a "menace" in South Florida. Which, if you take that into account, that could be another reason for Richards response.

IMO The euro drivers are no better or worse than the states drivers. IF YOU compare equal: ages, vehicle performance, etc. IMO again I don't think it matters if you own one of these things or not, either now or in the past or just interested in them. As far as "Speed" goes their is no IMO about it "It Kills" Remember speeding is a lot more than a posted limit, their is road conditions, "Driver Conditions", Vehicle Conditions and many more too numerous to mention. I live in the belief and hope a "Good" LEO will take all of them into account. Giving the "Reckless Drivers" a ticket or a Lecture no matter at what speed they are traveling and would not stop a driver for only exceeding the posted Limit" Remembering ALL those conditions" Lastly a uniform "All States" driving code, licensing requirement, education, etc. for both Driver and LEO would be of benefit.

Most dangerous drivers are

Suzi Soccermoms, in their Tahoe's (or the likes), speeding around schools and malls because they are sooo busy and always late, occupied with anything but actual driving. on the phone, putting on make-up, 3 screaming kids and a dog in the back, at no point in time they have an idea about anything surrounding them. Not really in control of the behemoth ...Typical comment after a crash is " i didn't see him", duh..
A Vette driver doing 130 mph is a lot safer, because the person is highly aware of what he is doing and checking his surroundings 360 deg. even if its 3 am , dry and the roads are clear of traffic.
and driving a car that actually is capable of responding quickly. of course its not legal, thats clear.
Of course there are always the numbnuts that think they are racecar drivers and speed through traffic...

Flyboy, seriously, we all hope you're doing this on a track and not down an interstate where there are others you're passing who are going 65. Here in SoCal, I see people weaving in/out of traffic everyday who are going 100. My friends and I have kids and we have too much at stake to get killed by someone making a small mistake on the highway.
