  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi I have a 2015 Genesis AWD Ultimate and the Nav system keeps freezing. The problems comes and goes but it has been consistently getting worse. I am able to maintain all functions (ex; I can change the volume, mode, all temp controls work) hwoever the screen will freeze on the home screen. It can freeze be unresponsive for 2-5 minutes and then I click the home buttom and it will go to the main screen. I couldn't find any threads and I'm fairly new to the forums. Any help would be appreciated. Currently the car has 84,xxx miles so I'm certain I'm out of warranty although I purchased the car only 14 months ago. Thanks

p.s.
I have already tried resetting it through the settings and by clicking the reset button above the the DISP button.

Have your dealer see if there is any firmware update. If so, that may help. If not, most likely you'll need a new head unit.
My 2015 had a similar issue, although mine is the 8" display, non-ultimate. I tried multiple resets, but I had the same freezing issue. I ended up getting a new head unit. Other than a problem with multiple backup lines at first (solved with programming) all has been well since the swap.

2012 Genesis- Nav/Radio system freezing on the Genisis logo intermittently and only after a full reboot would it load properly. Well, Here's an update which is sorta insane: My ext warranty covered a replacement unit after ALL updates were performed and didn't resolve the issue. , The (NEW) unit was a remanufactured unit for almost $2k (insane) The moment it was installed I immediately had the same issue. The dealer has taken the car and attempted to troubleshoot everything leading to the system. Said it works, gave me the car and 3 days later, frozen screen again.. Took it back after a week they decided we are replacing the refurbished unit again. Gave it back to me, frozen screen after 24hours. They have the car again and have no clue what to do. This is going to be interesting because I don't think they can solve it yet they spent $2k of my warranty money and I want a solution. Any speculation of where this will end up?
They have had my car in the shop on and off a half-dozen times and the only saving grace is I take a loaner every time.

Problems like that can be difficult to diagnose. Often the real problem is something you'd not expect to be associated with the situation you see. Replacing the unit is obvious. It is also possible the refurbished unit is defective.

It is also possible that even a well trained and competent auto tech does not have the tools to diagnose this. Some seemingly unconnected relay may be intermittently doing something that shows up in the head unit. They may need an electronics guy to hunt it down or to find out from Hyundai if this is a known issue of some sort.

I personally have no idea what it could be but after a few decades of plant operation responsibility I've seen some really strange cause and effect situations. Good luck.

Disconnect Bluetooth, USB stick for music and see how it behaves, a flaky USB stick will cause some weird issues.

Bringing this back to life: my 2015 Ultimate had started doing the same thing
  • In reverse, screen says "Preparing..." Circular animation freezes, camera never comes up
  • Upon startup, the Genesis logo seems to last for a longer than usual period of time.
  • Home screen randomly appears with no input from me
  • Constant freezing, no matter the function (e.g. the other night navigating home from a nearby town, everything worked correctly until I exited the highway, then froze. 2 miles down the road GPS still indicated I was on the off-ramp and HUD direction prompt matched.)
  • Periodically interior trunk button doesn't open trunk (while pushing the button on the trunk lid power closes the trunk as designed)
I haven't even had the car for a year and it was very well cared for prior. What was the solution for the OP? I don't have a warranty and can't really stomach a $2k repair bill at 53k miles...

Have you updated the nav card?

I am 95% sure it's still on the factory software. I don't have text message functionality, so I think that indicates it's pretty old, if not original.
No matter how well cared for, electronics are a different thing all together. If nothing else, have you taken out the SD card and reinserted it? Grasping for straws but over five years it may not be contacting as well as it should. You can do an update but that will not correct a faulty diode or resistor if that is the real problem.

Thanks, Ed. I havn't popped the card out yet. The first time it started having issues, I was able to hold the audio power button down and the system eventually restarted. This was possible 3-4 times, but didn't seem to fix the issue for long any of the times it worked. Yesterday it wouldn't even restart upon holding the power button, but pressing the inset reset button worked. Still didn't fix the issues.

I wonder if a new SD card would fix it. Or at the very least maybe I drive without the card in the slot for a bit and see if everything else begins functioning correctly.

I've got another thread in which my driver's side mirror completely died for about 48hrs, including the ambient temp sensor but it's been back with no oddities since. I also wasn't able to use the inside trunk button to open or close the trunk several times... Seems like something is happening on the CANBUS maybe....

I would check the battery and related connections. Is the battery original?

Ed P, are you a former Chem E?

I speak as a former Chem E with about 12 years of refinery startup experience, and am also familiar with lots of weird cause/effects situations.

Not sure if it's the original battery, do you guys know of a date code or something to determine age of the OEM? A few months ago when I had my mirror issue and the trunk wouldn't open/close 100% properly, I disconnected the battery for about half an hour and was careful when reconnecting it to get it tight without overtorquing. I've monitored system voltage via a BT OBDII reader but all seemed normal, a bit over 14v running and dropping to a bit over 12v. Haven't checked after it sits for a while though.

Quick update on my situation: I received my map update on Friday (my software was so old, they sent me both an SD card and a USB drive as has been mentioned by other 2015 owners in the forum) and applied the update. It took exactly the 35 minutes that was estimated and afterward I have had zero issues with the system. Bluelink still works correctly with no intervention required by me and I haven't experienced any lockups whatsoever. Fingers crossed this did the trick and was mighty cheap considering the alternative.

A few other things I've noticed with the update (good and bad, personal preference):
  • System boot time is longer
  • Climate screen removed all info except set temp when in Auto (I'm sure 99% of owners didn't care, but I liked having insight into exactly what the system was doing at all times, fan speed, airflow direction, A/C status) I miss it.
  • BT AUDIO IS REMEMBERED UPON RESTART! I would have paid $35 just for this feature. No longer do you have to change your audio input back to BT audio each time you start the car. (Related, you can select which audio sources are cycled by the steering wheel mode button, so if you only ever use FM, BT and USB, you can uncheck everything else and then the button will only cycle those three inputs!)
  • Routing is suddenly much smarter (maybe learns from the routes you take...?)
  • Auto zoom is nice and map rendering in more clear
  • Bluelink Drive info screen was removed (nobody probably when knew it was there, but I liked being able to see how much time I don't idling on a trip)
  • You can set a delay to automatically return to map when navigating (e.g. wanted to see the artist for the song that's playing, so hit media button. After the set time (20 seconds for me) map returns without my intervention)
  • Two pop up notifications: next navigation prompt when on another screen AND song update info. Love both of these!
  • When reaching destination, guidance automatically stops (I think this is different from before)
  • Text message integration (it's ok. I wish I could view the message in D while stopped at a light and I wish I could send dictated responses (my 15 Grand Cherokee did this with an active Uconnect subscription) ratger than just the 4 pre-generated options.)
I'm sure there are more but I thought those were notable for someone who went from the original software to the latest. If day off you're more than 2 years outdated, this is a must buy!

The year and month is etched in the battery post. I think the negative one? Atleast on the oem batteries.

I have noticed the same things when updating my old (probably original) system. I also mentioned in the other thread about removing info from the climate screen when on AUTO. I liked to check the fan speed and direction. I also love the fact that BT Audio is remembered upon restart. It was totally worth the $$. I have noticed today when I have arrived to the office that the BlueLink driving information is no longer an option when you hit the Bluelink button. I did like to check the stats once in a while. Oh well.

Happy to hear that you are not experiencing any problems after the update.

I still can't decide if to stay with 12.5 on our 2015 ultimate or go to 14. Sounds like a toss up so far.

Given the price, updated POIs is nice to have. Roads don't move much but they are added to.
We all have different priorities and needs. The visual of climate control is not something I've ever used. Mine is set for 72 degrees and is never touched. Push the CLIMATE button and it shows what you need.
I don't see a downside to having the latest maps.
