  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Thoughts on using an aftermarket ATF in the 8-speed transmission? I know Valvoline makes an ATF that lists the SP-IV-RR as a spec....

Just curious here. Is the thought that the aftermarket will be better, or is it cheaper?

I don't know, but I have always thought that fluids that claim to meet multiple specs, probably don't match any single one of them perfectly.

Cheaper. However, I've used aftermarket in other vehicles without a problem. But in the 8-speed on my '12 Genny, can I do aftermarket or should I bite the bullet and get the genuine ATF?

How many quarts are you planning on getting? For a drain/fill, you won't need more than 5qts. OEM fluid is currently $11.41/qt:

00232-19052 - Genuine Hyundai ATF SP-IV-REAR

Valvoline is ~ $8/qt. If you buy a box of 6, that's ~ $48. If you buy 5qts of OEM, that's ~ $57 (I'm pretty sure your local dealership would be willing to price match the link above).

*IMHO, you won't hurt anything by going with Valvoline.

But, for ~ $9 more, you're putting in OEM fluid.

I use oem fluid. As princleybug said its a only a couple more bucks. I would say valvoline would work. But why chance it. Dealer just did my 15 5.0. I can definitely feel a difference. Smoother shifts. I have 35k on my and the service guy said it dont need to be done. I say cheap insurance!

I'm no expert, but nowadays transmissions are so high tech that I would ONLY use OEM for it, even if it costs $40/qt or whatever it may be, the old days of ATF 4 fitting everything are long gone.

Yeah I think I'm agreeing with you, at least for the Genesis. Other cars, I don't mind doing Valvoline (like my wife's '15 Santa Fe), but for the Genesis, I'm thinking I'll do OEM fluid.

I tend to be OEM but used Amsoil CVT fluid in my Accord and it's smoother than new.

I have 40K on my '15 Gen. How soon should I do ATF, diff, and any AWD fluid?
