If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

While changing engine oil today, noticed oil seepage between the torque converter housing and the engine. No drip/oil stains on the engine under cover. Could not pin point the source. Cleaned for now to check it again later.

Thoughts?

Huh. That's oil alright. Seems to be more on the driver's side than the passenger's side. There could be something above the bell housing that's leaking oil, and finding its way to that spot. But...like you mentioned....it very well could be the rear main seal. I could've sworn that I read someone had that problem on this forum, a long time ago.

Planning on bringing it to the dealer? I forget how long the warranty is in Canada.

Yeah, will wait for it to reappear and then take it in. The powertrain warranty is 100k kms here in Canada. So I have 20k kms left. Will check the PCV valve tomorrow just to see if it is not blocked or seized.

Just checked the PCV valve - no issues with it. Could not find any obvious leak source from the engine bay apart from it appearing wet at the dust cover (The window that is used to remove the torque converter mounting bolts). Ordered a bore scope from Amazon. Will take a better look once I get it.

It may be a leaking transmission pump seal. We've seen two of these at our shop, one of them being my own car. The leak is visible at the seam where the engine meets the transmission. When I first saw it at an oil change, I had the tech clean the area to see if it came back, which it did. The strange thing is that it didn't smell like ATF, so I thought it was a leaking rear main also. But it was definitely the transmission. When the transmission was pulled there was a surprising amount at the bottom of the bell housing.

Is this only related to the 2.0T or are 3.3Ts having the same issue?

Thank you so much for the info. I did check underneath the car after about ~200km (~120) miles of driving and there was none seen yet. Not been driving around because of the pandemic. Will check again after ~3000 miles and see if there is still any seepage.

Both cars we found the leak on were 3.3T, but I'm pretty sure the same transmission is used for both engines.

As for the rear main, we haven't found any leaking yet, and rmod has just found a seep, so it hasn't been established if it's his rear main or the transmission.

Here is what I saw on my car:

Again, it didn't smell of transmission fluid. If you find something similar, clean it and check it again at your next oil change to see if it comes back. Mine was obvious, there were actual droplets on those two bolt heads.

Huh. Interesting. Even looks like oil and not like ATF, like you said.

Does it seem like it has a dark red hue to it when you zoom in? (Or am I just imagining things?)
It looks a lot more red in the picture than it did under the car. I think it's probably the grime mixed in that reduced the smell and color.

Bottom line is, there shouldn't be any fluids present there. So either way, you have to separate the engine and trans to find out where it's coming from.

Good news, however.. Our tech that handles these types of jobs for Genesis finds it much faster to drop the entire engine/trans assembly with the subframe and front suspension still attached. So when this is done, it's a great time to get your lowering springs installed.. :)

Well, count me in to find out the problem! Also, if they are just replacing the part again, does that mean it was originally installed incorrectly or that it's faulty? If faulty, I would think the problem would re-appear.

I'm starting to feel like I may be toeing a line here, so I'll just state facts, and I'll try not to speculate.

The leak as shown above was found on only 2 cars at our dealership so far. This is a small percentage of the G70s we have sold. On both cars, Hyundai/Genesis opted to replace the entire transmission.

I will be checking for any signs the new transmission is leaking when I get my oil changed.

Interesting. I would imagine they are doing an analysis on the transmissions? Makes me wonder if there were assembly issues. There have been a few in the G70 with things like an interior panel, wiper blade etc.. Could happen with the mechanical stuff too due to a new work force? Speculation on my part but interesting.

I appear to have the identical leak on my 3.3 litre G70, just discovered yesterday:

Oil leak near transmission / rear main seal

Update:

Got the quick jack delivered today, so decided to inspect the area again. Did ~3000Kms since last oil change. Nothing major as last time, but there is still some seeping going on.
Now I am wondering.... I may have overfilled the transmission and that is what is seeping out......but that was done ~40K Kms ago! or ..... may be the 5W30 oil I used this time instead of the 0W30 make it stop? ...... As you can see.. I suck at troubleshooting.
Well....nothing to do but to wait and observe.

It does seem like a seal, but just thinking outside the box, could it be lube being thrown by the nearby U-joint? (at least in the OP photo, on the left)

@rmod @Draco-REX Any updates? Seems this is showing up on more cars...

Nothing much. no choice but to keep an eye on it. I am sure If I take it in now the dealership will not do anything. So the plan is to take it in once it becomes a full blown leak. :(
