If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have encountered a problem that has apparently left the dealer and hyundai unable to help.

I purchased a CPO 2016 Genesis AWD in January with 34k miles, it was fine for the first month (1k miles) then i began getting an intermittent issue at startup where i would get multiple dashboard warning lights for the auxiliary electrical systems, the speedometer and tach were unresponsive, it does not show what gear it is in, no mileage is recorded while driving, no power steering, no temperature displayed, backup camera does not work, and a warning is displayed on the center console that using the electrical systems without the car running will drain the battery (although the car is on and drives fine). Here is a video of the issue: 20200214_181434.mp4

It can go a few days without happening, and then it may happen every time it is started for a few hours, then go away again. The first time it happened I was out and had to drive it home, after about 10 miles it suddenly went away on its own and everything started working again (didn't hit any significant bump or make any turn, was just maintaining highway speed)

And so far here is the timeline of the issue:

1/11 - purchased with 34,296 miles
2/14 - issue first occurred (35,238 miles) (942 miles after purchase)
2/17 - brought to local dealer (not where i purchased since they are 40 miles away) - 35,247 miles (951 miles after purchase)
2/24 - was told it was repaired, but the issue occurred when I started the car to leave
2/28 - local dealer service completed (11 days) (35,293 miles) - replaced a junction box
3/7 - Issue occurred again
3/9 - brought to dealership where purchased it (35,458 miles) (1,164 miles after purchase) (165 miles since last service)
3/19 - purchasing dealer service completed (10 days) (35,460 miles) - replaced dashboard cluster
4/11 - Issue occurred again (35,525 miles) (1,229 miles after purchase) - only 65 miles after service (40 miles of which was driving back from dealership)
4/16 - brought to dealership where purchased (not sure of exact mileage)
6/5 - service completed (50 days!) - replaced tpms module, issue reoccurred while they had it, then they repaired some connectors they believed to be faulty
6/8 - Issue occurred again (35,768 miles) (1,472 miles since purchase)
6/12 - returned it to dealership again with intent to initiate lemon law

I had also opened a claim with hyundai consumer affairs, but was told there is little to no chance the vehicle would be repurchased even though they have no idea how to repair it. Was told by the dealership that they aren't sure of what to do next, but they did not seem open to the idea of returning the vehicle even though they readily admit they cannot repair it. I assume the path forward will be under a lemon law, but was hoping someone on here may have encountered a similar issue and would have a recommendation as to what could be a potential repair.

It is unfortunate because the car really is nice, but it has been completely unreliable and no one has been able to give an answer as to whether the air bags would even deploy if the car was driven while the systems were not functional.

Sheesh that sucks. I don't know the answer, but I do hope you get it worked out. Sorry for your troubles; I'd be extremely frustrated.

Check your state for the lemon laws

in CA it is still valid if the issue appeared the first time within the basic warranty which is 5/60k. Regardless of what number owner you are.

This looks to be similar to what happened to my car. I had the same warnings on the dash, no turn indicators, no speedo but mine had no issues with the power steering. You most likely have a faulty module on the CAN bus.

Thanks for that, it does seem similar. Looking at the schematic you provided in that post makes it seem that they are looking in the right area, as the first repair states:
"Instructed to disconnect connector EF21 and MR11 to test the CAN high/low pins 17 & 18. Found high resistance indicating CGW is faulted. Removed and replaced CGW"

So they essentially disconnected the entirety of CAN C by disconnecting MR11, but rather than replacing a part within CAN C they replaced the gateway.

On the 2nd repair was the instrument cluster, also on CAN C

On the 3rd repair it states:
"upon inspection found when removing TPMS module from system all other systems operate normally, TPMS module needs replacement."

then on the 4th repair they contacted the hyundai tech line who seemed to believe it was a wiring issue stating:
"perform wiggle test on connectors MR11 and I/P-J connectors with no change. Clean connector EE11 add dielectric grease for better connection."

So it seems that they are looking in the right place, but as you mentioned there are several modules on that bus and any of them could be causing the issue, and they do not have the time to spend tracking down which one it is so they just attempt a quick repair of one of them. I suppose the good news is that they have already replaced 2 of the 15 modules as well as the gateway, so only 13 more to go.

So the dealers replaced the Gateway, Instrument Cluster and the TPMS module and had the same results? Seems to me that they weren't really looking in the right places. The people who worked on my car also had the A pillar and both toe kick panels off, using the same connectors to diagnose.

This is way too similar to what happened in my car. When a module's transceiver chip (it reads and re-transmits all communications) corrupts the bus, everything goes haywire. Reading the data with the oscilloscope was the key. When the bus had the error (and the dash started throwing faults), the signal was no longer symmetrical.

As mentioned in my article (If you want to tackle this yourself), start disconnecting modules one at a time until the multiple faults stop (you should then only have the disconnected module show up on the dash). Almost all of the connectors are accessible other than a few high up in the dash.

When removing the connector for a module, the CAN bus pins will have to be jumped to keep the circuit intact or you'll still have multiple errors on the dash. For example, if you were to remove the parking brake module at connector ff02 inside the right rear wheel well, you would need to jump pin 2 to 16 and pin 3 to 15 on the side that runs back into the body by the right rear seat.

Too bad there isn't some diagnostic tool to easily figure these issues out. Your car is fixable. I wouldn't give up on it. It's a great car.

If you need any more info, PM me. I can send all manuals and info I've collected on this.

I had similar problem, recurred over a number of years, along with other electrical gremlins. Latest fix is replacement of a wiring harness that required removal of the interior and dash. It’s a big job and the harness alone is $3-4K part. Took about 60 days in the shop and they f*cked up some stuff putting it back together.

Seems to have solved the problem

Good luck.

Here is the harness, well wiring assembly

They actually just replaced all these harnesses in the latest repair attempt. It has been back at the dealer for nearly a month now but I will supposedly be getting it back at some point next week after they spend a few days attempting to confirm that the issue does not reoccur. Hopefully it takes care of the issue as it did for you, but I will follow up with what happens in case it is helpful to anyone else.

No $hit! I suppose the fix is only as good as the tech whom did the repairs? I hope it solves your problem. Good luck...👍

Hope you got a loaner. My car was at the dealership for 6 weeks before they traced the problem to a dodgy wire that frayed in the trunk.

Sounds similar to the description I heard.
