  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So my buddy recently bought a brand new Audi S5 Sportback and he and I spent a couple days comparing our two vehicles, and in case anyone else is interested in the comparison, I thought I'd post some quick thoughts about how it went. For reference, I have a 2020 G70 3.3T AWD.
  • For starters, we tested 0-60 acceleration, once with me driving my G70 and a second time switching cars. Both times his S5 pretty handily beat my G70 with his S5 pulling out to around a couple car lengths lead. I have to admit his S5 pulls insanely strong right off the line. My G70 is no slouch by any means but the S5 is definitely quicker.
  • In Sport mode (I think Audi calls it Dynamic), the S5's exhaust sounds better from the outside as well.
  • Interestingly, I found the S5's Comfort mode to be worse than the G70's Eco mode. In Comfort mode, the S5 seemed almost gutless. But one nice thing was that if you put the Audi in Sport mode, it stays in Sport the next time you start the car. It bugs me how if I have the car in Sport mode, the next time I start the car it defaults to Comfort.
  • Both my buddy and I agreed that the G70 was noticeably better in steering response and handling. The Audi's steering is at best numb and at worst actually awful. His S5 does have the dynamic steering option so maybe that's why it felt so terrible compared to the G70, but we both agreed the G70 was lot better in this regard.
  • Exterior - this is purely subjective, but I do prefer the S5 exterior styling over the G70. I think the Audi designers really knocked it out of the park with the S5 exterior design, especially the Sportback. It's a beautiful car in my opinion. Plus, I think the quad tips, 20" wheels and the black trim really put it a couple notches above the G70 in terms of looks. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the dark chrome on the G70 and all the little spots that seem to accumulate on it. On a side note, my buddy chose the Green metallic color, which I thought I would hate but it's actually not bad, and it could even grow on me and eventually become pretty cool. It's definitely distinctive and eye catching.
  • Interior:
    • Seats - the S5's seats are way more comfortable, but I think it's because of the ventilated seats on the G70, which tend to be harder. Although my buddy really liked the side bolsters that kick in when you put it in Sport.
    • Both interiors are nice, with maybe a slight edge to the S5. The G70 seems to have more leather in the interior, and we both liked the contrast stitching, but I think Audi's interiors are the best in the business so the fact that the G70 can even be compared is a big plus in my opinion. Though personally, I would not have gone with the red interior that my buddy chose, especially with the green exterior.
    • Tech- this goes to the Audi. The virtual cockpit in the S5 is pretty cool, plus the touch display screen is befitting a car of this class (though personally, this isn't a huge deal to me). The Audi also has a parking assist function which I meant to test, but then forgot to.
    • Practicality - again this goes to the S5. A lot more room in the S5, but it is a sportback after all. Not a huge deal to me since I don't use my G70 for hauling stuff, but thought I'd mention it.
Overall, the S5 seems to win most of this comparison but then again, it is about $15K to almost $20K more expensive than the G70. I still think the G70 represents the best value in this class and I'm not sure the Audi is $15K "better" than the G70. That said I wouldn't mind trading cars with my buddy for a bit :)

Thanks for the comparison. The S5 certainly sounds nice, but like you said, a good but more $$. I've always thought they look really nice.

Good comparison. I would be interested to hear how they do against each other at any speed other than on launch. Based on these numbers from car and driver the G70 is quicker.

It's a good question and I wouldn't mind seeing if my buddy would be willing to test this out some more. I suppose it wouldn't surprise me if the transmission in the G70 was more responsive and quicker at downshifting so those numbers from C&D could very well be accurate. I really liked the S5, but both me and my buddy agreed that the G70 seems to be more of a 'drivers' car, whereas the S5 is more built for comfort and luxury with a good dash of sportiness mixed in.

I think it`s been mentioned recently as well the G70 is known to be soft off the line to increase longevity for warranty or something like that. Once it's rolling its another ball game.

Absolutely.

It's to the point where, I wish Car & Driver would do a separate 0-60 test without launch control.

Yeah, makes sense. No doubt the S5 is a fantastic car in it's own right. That virtual cockpit is amazing.

The S5 is a great car, but I would bet the real world price difference is way more than $20k. Well done comparison, but they are not in the same league. I am totally enjoying my new G70 2.0T AWD, nice, sporty little sedan, respectable on fuel and with a big discount, certainly did not break the bank. I love the styling and the interior is top notch. It's a value play and well worth the money.

How are they not in the same league?

I am confused as well. Also the 2.0 would be more like an A5 comparo
Correct, the A4/A5 is Audi’s 2.0t. I drove one recently. Unlike the S4/S5, the 4 cylinder comes with the DSG transmission. It’s tuned much better than the ZF 8AT in the more powerful S cars. Driving experience and power from the A4 is comparable to the G70 2.0t AWD.

This is interesting. I did the identical test with my buddy’s S4 (lighter)...shortly after I got my G70. We swapped drivers, etc, etc.

The G70 beat the S4 every single time (0.1 sec quicker that the SB). I have it documented under my thread.

I personally think the G70 wins across the board other than tech. The Sportback is hot (almost got one)...but can’t be compared really to the G70. The S4 sedan would be the candidate.

S4/S5 does not have directional bending headlights. Also...if you want ventilated seats...you have to drop the gorgeous nappa seats...and the massage option. If you want heated rear seats...you have to drop the flat-bottom steering wheel that's also heated. Both deal breakers.

Anyhoo...good comparison!

Very interesting indeed - Beefer, do you have the RWD or AWD? If RWD, maybe that's why you're quicker than the S4 as isn't the RWD G70 a bit quicker off the line? Otherwise, I'm not sure why my buddy's S5 would be quicker. Hopefully it's not something to do with my G70.

I have the AWD. Few things though...I am at a very low elevation...temps where in the 50's (perhaps low 60's) with zero humidity...and I have already been mastering my LC.

I just looked up on the Audi website and the S4 is indeed supposed to be quicker than the S5 Sportback, so now you've got me more than a little curious. Elevation, temps and humidity definitely can play a role in acceleration times, but those factors were identical for both our cars. Plus, we each launched each others cars with pretty much the same results. Anyway, I can't find on the Genesis website what the 3.3T G70 is supposed to do 0-60, so I'm not sure who was "supposed" to win.

G70 is listed at 4.5 seconds. I have gotten 4.3 - 4.4 seconds stock via a Dragy. The S4 is listed at 4.4 seconds...so extremely close. Is what it is though :)

Now go get yourself a JB4 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
