If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Engine noise on cold start

Pennzoil Platinum 5/20. Im gonna try Mobil 1 5/20 next change. I still change my oil every 3-4000 miles, even with synthetic

I would definitely recommend the Mobil-1 over the Pennzoil. I had really good results with Mobil-1 quieting down the valvegear in my Mercedes.

Hi everyone, I've been reading this forum for a while, but just now joined. Great site.

Regarding the noise at start up, is this just on the V-6 or is it with the V-8 also?

thanks,
Cory

Concensus is that the problem is with the 3.8 litre V6 engine.

It is not limited to the V6. I had the most horrifying clattering sound from the V8 engine this morning. I left the car outside last evening until 11pm. Then I started it up and move it into the gararge because it was cold. Temperature was 3C. When I start the engine this morning, the engine sounded as though all the valves were hitting the pistons!. It quiet down after about 1 minute.

My Genesis has a noticable noise on the cold start. The dealer says Hyundai says this is normal or within range. I dont think so. I purchased the vehicle in January of 2009 the noise was not prominent then. I live in Texas where I can't blame the noise on excessively cold winters. Basically the engine is a bit noisey anyway for the quality of the vehicle.
ADVISE!!

Started and drove 2 genesis at 2 different dealers, both 4.6's. In both instances I turned to the salesman and said, sounds like a lifter problem. Sounded like a sewing machine tapping noise. enough for me to reconsider whether to get it or not.
does the noise you refer to sound like a lifter problem- tapping?

My V8 has had a noise at idle since first day. Other people remark that something seems to be wrong with the engine. It is a tapping noise at idle like valve tappets starved for oil. It is slightly better when warm. Two dealers told me it is normal.

I found this interesting.. Directly from the owners manual page 7/8 under "normal maintenance schedule":

Listed as number 9 "valve clearence.** (3.8L)

"** : Inspect for excessive tappet noise and/or engine vibration and adjust if necassary."

The manual states to inspect this every 60,000 miles on the 3.8. Mentions nothing for the 4.6. Weird

This isn't a valve clearance issue, it is a lubrication issue.
I hadn't realised the problem was also common on the V8's.
For the sake of a check valve in the filter you have to wonder why this hasn't been addressed, at least for the newer cars.

We had a few days near -15 a week or so back and I had no odd sounds in the morning, nor after sitting all day at work. May be valve adjustment issue as stated earlier.

I thought it was just me, i noticed this problem a few months ago and spoke to the service techs at the dealership when i went in for routine maintenance. They said it's normal engine sounds, i said this car is too new and too nice for such sounds. Now the sounds are getting worse, between the engine sounds and my tires sounds i need to turn the radio on loud to drown out all the noise, it's irritating!!!!

What with the windows open?!?! The Genesis is one of the quietest cars I've driven...very well insulated...including the glass.

What he said!:D

My valve clatter is only on cold starts and disappears completely after a very short while. After that the engine is very quiet unless I floor it to pass some slowpoke in a Bimmer;) when it makes a very nice growl.

No with all windows shut, the engine makes the noise on start up and while i'm driving, everytime i press the gas, my tire issue only happened when i changed out my dunlops for my blizzak snow tires. i have an appointment with the dealership on the 30th i'll have them check both issues out

I can barely hear the engine running, with the windows up. I have Michelin XIce's on and I don't hear them either....have Blizzak W60's on our Acura and they are only noisy when driving through snow and slush. Then they howl, but it is a good sound. It is the sound of them shoveling the snow out from under themselves as I pass SUV's stuck in the ditch.

I Have read most of the post about the start-up initial engine clatter. Majority of the posts are right on. But here's to clarify the difference between the two Genesis engines.

3.8 uses solid lifters and does not require oil pressure to work, however, it still needs that "cushion" of oil for the lifters/rockers to smoothly glide lessening the noise. The lifters doesn't get that oil until few seconds after engine start. Solid lifters slightly wears out but not much. I have seen solid lifters maintains it's proper gap at close to 200,000 miles. Of course there are also those engines that require gap adjustment at lesser miles. That is why it calls for an 60K inspection on the Maintenance Schedule. Adjustment to these solid lifter engines is a "MAJOR" maintenance as it requires the dis-assembly of the rockers, taking miniscule measurements and replacing worn-out "SHIMS" with the proper thickness to achieve the specified lifter gaps.

4.6 uses hydraulic lifters provided by the oil to set the "gap" to proper specs. Again, it takes few seconds to pump oil into those lifters to achieve the proper clearance (gap). Oil pressure automatically provides the proper gap to the valves regardless of the mechanical wear to the lifters. Hence the Scheduled Maintenance Schedule only mentioned the 3.8 for inspection.

My 3.8 also has a slight chatter at start-up, but as long as it goes away quickly, I'm not at all concerned. BTW, I am ASE certified but my daylight job is aircraft maintenance, so I am very meticulous with machines that I get to work on.

Darn, I figured most cars, other than a few with high performance engines, went to maintenance free hydraulic lifters years ago. People will either have to listen for tapping, or pull the cover and inspect to see tell when they need to put in new shims. That is not going to be a cheap service interval.

Of course, with some modern engine packages, it is just as intensive to replace the spark plugs...which is why they go with those long life ones.

I have two 3.3l santa fe, one 2007 with 173000 kms and one 2009 one with 22000 kms they both make these noises on cold start up. The older one was much worse on thinner Mobil 1 oil so now I run it on 10-40 GTX with a bit of STP added and the noise is much improved and often gone altogether. It runs very smoothly at all other times The newer one I have only had for a few weeks and when I change the oil in that I will use 10-40 GTX and see what happens. I live in the cold north so morning temps are often below zero C in Dec.

My 2011 Santa Fe with the 3.5L V6 use to make a clatter when starting up. Following break-in I changed to 20-50 Mobil-1 full syn oil. It still made the noise but I was as not as concerned since the full syn oil sticks to parts after shutdown and will begin lubing up without waiting for oil pressure.

I will do the same with the R-Spec although it doesn't sound quite as loud as the SF. Could just be the difference in V6 vs V8, engine cladding or some other small item.

I would think the Hyundai engineers looked at wear carefully and are satisfied that their designs are efficient. Otherwise that 100K mile warranty could kill them financially.
