2011 sedan: Does check engine light come on when an oil change is necessary?

I had been wondering about the oil life on my car, it’s been 3500 miles since I bought the car, and then today the check engine light comes on out of nowhere. There’s nothing about the oil life on the display computer, is this how the car notifies you that an oil change is necessary?
